JJ’s American Diner in Coral Gables, Florida

In the early ’90s JJ’s American Diner was located in the heart of Coral Gables where I first tried it. Not too long ago, My wife  and I ate their newer location (still in the Gables but right near South Miami) and we were disappointed. She still brings it up to this day (and blames me for it too). I convinced my friend to go with me , I mean any place can have an off day. When we walked in, there was a car chase on the news which had everyone in the place captivated, all 5 of them. There were more employees than customers which is a bad sign, you don’t need to watch Kitchen Nightmares to know that.

As far as appetizerss go, we went with the Homemade Chicken Tenders w/ Fries, Mild Spicy Battered Chicken Wings, and the Wets ( Fries covered with Cheese and Gravy). I thought of the 3, the Homemade Chicken Tenders were the best, but nothing I haven’t had better elsewhere.

Mild Spicy Battered Chicken

The Wets

Now the Mild Spicy Battered Chicken Wings, where do I start? Mild, Spicy and Battered were the 3 things they were not and the one last point, they weren’t any good. My bud seemed to love them though. The Wets, should be called the pits if you ask me. Let’s start with the bad execution as the fries were slightly burned but that didn’t stop him from going to town on them also.

Patty Melt

I had the Patty Melt (I’m sure you know the ingredients) and thought it tasted just as expected. Can anyone even mess one of these up? I tasted the Rye Bread, the Onions, the Cheese but no flavor from the Patty. It did not make an appearance tonight. In their defense, I’ve never had a Patty Melt where I could really taste the actual burger, those other flavors always tend to overwhelm the burger.

Famous American 10 oz. Burger

He ordered the Famous American 10 oz. Burger with Swiss Cheese, grilled Onions and Bacon. We both agreed that the burger itself got lost in the flavors of the toppings as well. JJ’s American Diner have a pretty extensive menu , which in some ways reminds me of the Big Pink. The only difference being that the Big Pink’s Burger was worth the drive.

About Burger Beast

I started writing the Burger Beast food blog to tell folks about those little forgotten gems in South Florida. Over the course of the last 5 years or so I've added News, Opinions, & Tips on a variety of Food related subjects. My first love will always be Burgers but Comfort Food is where it's at. At the end of the day I’m a regular dude who writes about a bunch of things I think you should know about.

I couldnt agree with you any more. I was highly dissapointed when i went there one night. Noticed the same thing the staff outnumbered the customers and they all seemed to busy to really provide any service.

    I think i payed around 11-13 dollars for 1 waffle. 1 WAFFLE!!!

Left me pretty bummed out as I do enjoy a good diner.
