A few years back, I accompanied my cousin Fred on a work assignment to Key West. The one thing we knew for sure was that we were going to go to Hog’s Breath. When we finally get down there, we realize there is no way that Fred’s truck is going to fit in any of the parking spaces. So we ended up eating at House Of Music (which I believe is now closed) in Big Pine Key and that’s definitely a story for another day.
My wife Marcela and I are walking down Duval Street and I’m telling her about what happened when Fred and I attempted to go to Hog’s Breath last time. Even though we were headed to the Pirate Soul Museum we detour to the good ole H.B. If you’ve never been here, it’s definitely a great & relaxing experience.
There are 2 bars, the first of which is open air has the stage right near it. There is a dude performing with his guitar some cover songs (he sounded pretty good). The 2nd bar is non-smoking and is situated next to their store that sells everything from their signature Hot Sauces to towels. It’s a little darker which means that is where we’re going to be seated.
We take our seats at the end of the bar, next to a boar and our bartender Slim (nice guy…alright cool guy) takes our drink order.
Marcela orders a Heineken and I get a Yuengling (honestly, I don’t think this could be any more of a touristy picture if we tried).
The other people sitting at the bar had different Beer tastes than us though.
I look over the menu and I decide on getting the Potato Skins and the Hog Burger with Cheese and Bacon. Marcela is now looking at me in disbelief as we had just eaten at Cheeseburger. I suffer for my craft folks. After Marcela is done with her Beer she decides to get a Hogarita (one of their specialty cocktails) which she really likes and by this time the Burger and Skins are here.
The Potato Skins were pretty good. They were covered in Chili, Cheddar Cheese, Scallions and Ranch.
The Hog Burger was delicious and according to their Menu it’s seasoned with “Hog Dust” which I assume is the same thing that is on the Fries (it tastes like Seasoned Salt with a little heat). The seasoning is so good I want to purchase some but of course on the way out I forget to.
Next time we’re in Key West again I:
- Plan on eating at Hog’s Breath again, this time on an empty stomach.
- Will have their World Famous Hog Dog
- Will purchase the Seasoning
- All of the above
