Jack’s Old Fashion Hamburger House – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

By

Named by AOL Cityguide as #7 on “The Nation’s 15 Best Burgers”, Jack’s Old Fashion Hamburger House (this place has been around since 1972 and is known for fresh burgers that are cut and ground twice daily on the premises) was a must stop for Burger Beast. I had heard rumblings here and there about Jack’s so I decided it was time to give it a go. My friend Mike was in town and some guy I know named Ed hitched a ride with us also. And….oh yeah, I vaguely remember their wives being there too. So there’s 3 different sizes available to order a Jack Jr. ( 1/4 lb.) , Original (1/3 lb.) and Big Jack (1/2 lb.) with your choice of toppings (these cost extra) : Lettuce-Tomato, Bacon, Chili, Grilled Onions and Extra Cheese. All three of us ordered the Big Jack Cheese ( the cheese appears to be some mix of american and swiss, I added diced onions, mustard, ketchup and mayo). I really didn’t find the burger that flavorful and it might have to do something with the fact that they use lean meat, not really a favorite of mine. Plus I don’t know why I added ketchup and mustard because these are topping I just don’t put on burgers anymore (I used to when I was 5 years old). It’s like people who put ketchup on scrambled eggs, I don’t get it but I used to. So when Ed ate half of his wife’s Jack Jr., which she ate plain, he realized the burger tasted better with no condiments on it. So Mike ordered another Jack Jr. for us to share and test this theory. I think he was right, it did taste better plain. But of course, that’s not enough for us. Ed lures me into getting another Big Jack Cheese and he of course gets one for himself also, which he splits with Mike. I did eat that 2nd Big Jack Cheese and I forgot to mention we tried their Chili Dog ( Good chili, Ok hot dog) , Fries (standard stuff) plus a Vanilla Milkshake (I liked it, Ed had the chocolate and felt like it didn’t taste enough like chocolate, Mike had the Strawberry and felt like it didn’t taste enough like strawberry). All in all, I thought it was a good hamburger but not good enough to be named in the “The Nation’s 15 Best Burgers”.

Ed was punished later that evening for over doing the meal. He should know when to say when. You boys and your Jr. High challenges.

I must say that did like the burger.

The best part of Jack’s is there is NEVER any gristle. Plus you put on your own condiments so it is exactly how you want it. Jack’s is awesome!

BB, I know this is an old post but it looks like you went back recently. How was the recent visit?

The original post was from October, but I did go recently so I added the pic of the burger, the fries and the chili dog. There was really nothing new to report which is why I didn't write any type of update, I found everything the same as before.

I ate there today after reading all the raves about Jack's.
The burger was good, fresh and cooked properly. No outstanding flavors or seasoning. 1/2 lb. for 5.95, so it was reasonably priced.
Fries were terrible, overcooked and cold.
I would go back, but this does not rate in my "favorite burger" category.
