Picnics Diner – South Miami, Florida

By

Picnics was once located inside Allen’s Drugstore at 67th and Bird Road. It was replaced by the S&S Diner when it moved to its stand alone location just 2 blocks down the street. Marcela had eaten at Picnics Diner when it was still in the Allen’s Drugstore location and she remembered loving it. I was originally torn as to which location to check out. I decided on checking out Picnics because as far as the S&S diner is concerned, I’d probably check out their original location instead. Picnics Diner has a “you’re in someone’s home” feel to it. So much so that the waitress was walking around in slippers. If you’re one of these people who are preoccupied with absolute cleanliness then this is not the place for you, it’s a little lax on the clean look (it really doesn’t bother me to tell you the truth just thought I’d mention it). As we sat down I was happily greeted by a Frank’s Red Hot bottle at my table, rejoice. We order the chili cheese fries. Marcela orders herself a tuna melt and chocolate shake while I decide to go with their cheeseburger and a hot dog. The dog comes topped with shredded cheese and diced raw onions. The chili on the fries are way better than the fries themselves. The fries here are the ones that come with that weird crispy texture, I don’t like them. Marcela‘s shake was good but the ice cream itself tastes like Farm Store brand. I’ve had my share of Farm Store ice cream in my life and I like it but was expecting more. Marcela likes her tuna melt but she wants me to mention that the Sports Grill tuna melt is still the one to beat. The burger was a standard diner burger with white processed cheese (I hate that, big time). I found the hot dog to be the best thing I had (that’s a side of mayo for my burger in the picture in case you wondering and in case you weren’t, now you know). Would the hot dog and chili be enough to get me to come back here? Not really. Some people swear by this place but my thoughts are it’s a diner and breakfast is probably it’s strong suit. So next time it’s going to be some eggs, bacon and toast. Buttered of course.

If you're in the mood for a good bowl of chili, this is the place to go.

I get that mood every once in a while and usually I settle for Wendy's, which is also good.

But not as good as this place.

The S&S in Allen's Drugstore is not as good as the original north of downtown. It lacks the several decades of grease build-up, to say nothing of the motley collection of folks you'll find there.

The last time I was in the original S&S (I guess that's technically midtown?), the waitress told me about the second location. Without any prodding she said the original is much better.

Picnics is a great place for breakfast on the weekends. The chocolate chip pancakes are a hit with the kids, the grits are good and they always get the eggs the way you ask for them.
