Hogzilla’s Inspired Barbecue in South Beach

I was probably about 20 to 25 feet from the front door of Hogzilla before I was enveloped in a beautiful web of smoke smothering the air. As I walked in, I noticed how different the place looked compared to the previous bbq resto that was here. There are just these little odd artifacts on the walls that I was digging.

Once seated you’re given some popcorn with some smoky seasoning. I’m not really a big popcorn fan but I was starving and this seemed to open up my appetite even more.

Below you can find pics of many of the dishes served at Hogzilla. I’ve been to Hogzilla a few times now and I’ll share what are my favorite items on the menu with you.

For sure, for sure the Maple Syrup Marinated Bacon. The smokiness is there, it’s thick cut and of course you’ve got the maple syrup dipping sauce. I say skip the dipping, save a few slices for later in the meal or line your pockets with them.

Yes, Pork Chicharrones. So good and there’s a dipping sauce. Nice crunch and very crispy, the way it should be.

Far and away my favorite thing on the Hogzilla menu are the Redneck Tacos. Replace your usual corn or flour tortillas with cornbread pancakes and fill with either beer can chicken, pork, or dolphin and there you have it. I tried all 3 and you can’t go wrong with any of ‘em but if I had to choose I’d say the beer can chicken. The chicken was smoky and moist.

Shiner Bock And Sharp Cheddar Soup

You need to get some of the Jalapeño Cheddar Cornbread Muffins. This is where it’s at.

I liked the Cuban Style Pulled Pork sandwich. I didn’t think it was authentic but it had a great taste. I also could have done without the lettuce. I hate lettuce but that’s me, you might love it that way.

Smoked Duck Breast

Wild Game Sausage Mixed Grill consists of 3 smoked sausages of  buffalo, wild boar, and alligator. The alligator stood out flavor wise out of the 3 and I cared the least for the wild boar aka I won’t be having that one again. Their take on fried rice was spot on with their bourbon bbq sauce replacing soy sauce. It was probably the best of the sides with Idaho mashed potatoes a close second.

Both times I’ve been here I ordered the Hogzilla Rack. It’s a gargantuan beef rib. The 1st time I ordered it not realizing how gigantic it was. It really put me in a pre-historic state of mind. I can’t even begin to imagine how large the three bone rack must be.If the redneck tacos are my favorite then this is definitely my second favorite dish. They nailed it.

There are 6 desserts on the menu but I’ve tried 3 so far. I’m not a cupcake dude but dark chocolate and bacon are a good combo. I had the Bread Pudding which was good in the flavor department but I found to be a little on the dry side. As for Blueberry Rhubarb Cobbler With Vanilla Ice Cream, I can’t heap enough praise on it. It seems that this is the one to get.

I’m not a BBQ expert but there’s some serious shit going on here. I won’t stop til I’ve tried everything on the extensive menu. And til then……

    That looks really good! I’ve been reading some wildly diverging “reviews” on line, and also commentary about the operators and staff. I was amused to see the first “review” on Yelp before the opening! :)

    I consider myself to be a BBQ expert. I’ve spent the last few years trying to find good BBQ in South Florida and I have had somewhat of a difficult time finding it. The best places I have been to are Tom Jenkins in FTL and the Georgia Pig by St Thomas Acquainis highschool. These 2 BBQ restaurants are very good by S. Florida standards but would probably be considered average on a national basis. Hogzilla on the other does not even hold a candel to either Tom Jenkins or Georgia Pig. There BBQ concept is great but their execution is horrible. A good indication of the lack of BBQ passion this restaurant has is the fact that they serve Jack Daniel BBQ sauce. I’m not saying that JD’s BBQ sauce is bad I’m just saying that no self respecting BBQ joint will ever serve you Publix caliber BBQ sauce.
