The South Florida Burger Invasion Continues

Since we’re at the tail end of 2011 I thought maybe I should write about the Burger situation in South Florida. Well, more like like the invasion that continues. Back in January I spoke about the new and upcoming. Hot Stuff Grille and Sunny Restaurant didn’t last past 6 months and Jr’s Gourmet Burger won New Times’ Best Burger 2011. It’s a great burger if you haven’t tried it.

So here’s the list of the new and upcoming with thoughts sprinkled throughout, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments area:

Boca Burger Bar: Don’t know much about this place. The menu looks great though.

Burger Bar by Chef Allen: The 1st spot was in the Ft. Lauderdale Airport and it seems as if he’s going full steam ahead with creating a chain of these. I don’t doubt the burgers will be great but I could do without the $25 Burger topped with edible 23 Carat Gold.

Chuck Burger Joint: I’ve been to Chuck Burger Joint a few times. They use Creekstone Farms Beef which I love but I wasn’t enamored with their burger. Another of the ever growing “Shake Shack” clones.

Flip Burger Bar: I ate there a couple of times and thought it was a solid burger but I haven’t been there since the change of ownership. Anyone been recently?

Flip Burger Boutique: There is no official anouncement about this but Richard Blais (Top Chef) mentioned that he’s actively looking to bring FBB to Miami Beach. I didn’t care for it when I tried it in Atlanta but people seem to love it. The fries and shakes are killer though.

Good Stuff Eatery: This is almost a copy of the previous statement about Flip Burger Boutique. Spike Mendelsohn (Top Chef) is also looking to create a Good Stuff Eatery post in SoBe. I’ve liked the burgers I’ve tried at the last 3 SoBe Burger Bashes.

Lokal Burgers and Beer: Opening soon in Coconut Grove, the Lokal will be bringing
sustainably & locally sourced burgers & beers“. I’m looking forward to hitting this place up.

Red Robin: Yes, they’re a chain and I’m sure you are familiar with their commercials. I had Red Robin a few years back and the set-up reminded me of Denny’s with a better burger. People will flock to this place as it’s very kid friendly.

Shake Shack: They’re already open but I can’t pass up any opportunity to mention the Shack. I’m excited as they are going to be opening their 2nd SFL location near me in the former spot of Smoke’T and JJ’s American Diner before that. I’d wish them luck but I don’t think they need it.

Shula Burger: I’ve had burgers at Shula’s 347 Grill and thought they were great. The question is whether a whole Shula Burger concept will work? The 1st location opens up in Islamorada on December 8th, 2011.

Smashburger: My favorite style of burger is smashed on the flat top. Guess what Smashburger does? That’s right…you’re on the ball. 2 more locations are on the way with North Miami in December and Kendall in February.

Umami Burger: This was the Best Burger I had at SoBe Burger Bash 2011. New Times reported that owner Adam Fleischman plans to have the first Umami location in the Design District open by Art Basel 2012. His plans are for 3 to 4 locations in Miami. Start the year countdown now.

Anything I left out? Let me know.

About Burger Beast

I started writing the Burger Beast food blog to tell folks about those little forgotten gems in South Florida. Over the course of the last 5 years or so I've added News, Opinions, & Tips on a variety of Food related subjects. My first love will always be Burgers but Comfort Food is where it's at. At the end of the day I’m a regular dude who writes about a bunch of things I think you should know about.

I have eaten at Flip Burger many times since the change of ownership – we go 2-3 times a month. The burgers are consistently excellent, as is the service. Beef and turkey burgers are both always full of juicy goodness (and now I’m craving one…).

How about that new place that opened up on Miracle Mile where Fatburger used to be. The name escapes me. And those CG burger places too.

BTW, another great thing about Red Robin is the full bar. “Kid-Friendly” plus “Full Bar” equals “Happy Family”. That’s a little formula I created to explain the success of the abomination named California Pizza Kitchen. You’ll notice that the food doesn’t factor in at all.

I wasn’t impressed by CG. Am I the only Char-Hut fan here?

I tried to hit up Hot Stuff Grille this past weekend. Didn’t realize that is closed.

Really excited to hear about Umami Burger. I’ve seen and heard a lot about them.

I still need to make the trip down for Shake Shack. This is a winner from everyone I talk to.

Exciting burger news for South Florida. Keep it coming!

Yo Beast. You hit up a lot of burger spots. For the life of me, I don’t get why you are so enamored with Shake Shack. They are a weak clone of Taylor’s Refresher/Gott’s Roadside and In-N-Out Burger in California. Both predate Shake Shack by years. You need to come out West to check them out.

I am enamored you’re right. But you’re also right, I need to try Taylor’s Refresher, In-N-Out I’ve had but not since my Shake Shack fascination.
