Stardust Video & Coffee in Winter Park

As I walked into Stardust Video & Coffee, one thought crossed my mind, why isn’t there someplace like this in South Florida? My second thought involved a dodgeball game against the hipster staff, where I always nail them full blast in the head, but that story is for another day.

As a former independent film store owner, I appreciated the variety of DVDs & VHS (yes, VHS) available for rent. The menu‘s dishes are also movie related and include titles like 5 Easy Pieces and Amores Perros. There’s coffee, tea, craft beer (on tap and in bottles), wine, and a full bar.

Monday nights, they host the Audubon Park Community Market from 6-10 PM, where you can pick up anything from meals to freshly picked produce. It’s great to see them so involved with the local community.

Reiner of Guzman?

Marcela and I surveyed the menu, and I decided that the Rob Reiner was the way to go for me, while she chose the Luis Guzman. Both are great actors and directors (Reiner’s) in their own right, but would their namesake sandwich and chili match up?

The Rob Reiner was a pressed meatloaf sandwich with BBQ sauce and cheese. Much like Meathead, there is much substance to this sandwich. I was caught off guard by how non-beefy the meatloaf was and how well it matched up to the sweet BBQ sauce.

The bread added a nice crunch, and for a bit there, I was convinced I was having a meatball sandwich (not sure why). It was surprisingly close to a perfect take on a meatloaf sandwich.

The Luis Guzman is a giant bowl of vegetarian chili served with tri-colored tortilla chips. The chili had some great textures with the roughly diced-up raw onions, soft beans, and shredded cheese.

If it wasn’t for the fact that I always eat my chili beefed up, I wouldn’t have felt something was missing. I was only really disappointed that there was no heat since Luis Guzman is a pretty lively personality. He did play the character Pachanga after all.

I’d like to come back on a Monday night to catch the market, possibly try out one of the other sandwiches and maybe rent a VHS. Just kidding, I only rent Betamax.
