Fatburger for a Kingburger & Some Chili Cheese Fat Fries

Many of its contemporaries cut corners by switching to frozen beef patties and using heat lamps to keep their sandwiches warm, but Fatburger never did. Instead, in 1947, Lovie Yancey founded Fatburger as Mr. Fatburger in Los Angeles.

I was lucky enough to eat at Fatburger for the first time on their home turf when visiting my late grandmother in Glendale, California. Then when I was old enough to gamble, I’d go to Las Vegas and grab a Fatburger on the strip.

Later, Queen Latifah franchised several locations in South Florida, including one four spots over from the cell phone store I managed in Coral Gables. I loved watching them place the fresh beef patty on the flat-top and add cheese and mustard to round out a tasty burger specimen.

Speaking of Queen Latifah, some rappers, like the Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, Notorious BIG, and Tupac, have shown Fatburger some love in their songs.

Fatburger in South Beach

South Beach Fatburger Restaurant at Night

January 26th, 2009 – There is a Fatburger on South Beach (947 Washington Avenue), and when Marcela shops at the MAC cosmetics store near there, I’ll take Fatburger home for dinner.

From time to time, we’ll also eat at the actual Fatburger location. While I decide to go with the Kingburger (1/2 lb. burger), Marcela has the Fatburger (1/3 lb. burger).

The toppings I added to my Kingburger were cheese, ketchup, and mayo. Why those toppings? This is an excellent fast-food burger, and that’s the holy trinity of fast food condiments.

Fatburger reminds of Gabe’s Burgers (long gone but not forgotten by me, at least). As I recall, they had three locations: one on Bird Road across from Bird Bowl, one near the Miami International Airport, and the other near the B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s original location in Hialeah on 49th st.

Their big deal, though, is that they have a turkey burger. I did not try it this time, though. I prefer the real deal as I’m not calorie counting if I’m eating here. The onion rings are outstanding and recommended as well are the Fat Fries. I ordered the chili cheese fat fries, which I thought were great, but Marcela did not share my enthusiasm.

She did love their Real Ice Cream chocolate shake. Since she loves ice cream, it may also be something you want to try. This time though, she ordered the Real Ice Cream strawberry shake, and she was less than enamored.

Fatburger in Coral Gables

July 1st, 2010 – I frequent Fatburger (232 Miracle Mile) a whole bunch. Through trial and error, I’ve figured out the best things to have here.

There are five burger sizes available S (Baby Fat, 2.5 oz.), M (Fatburger, 5.3 oz.), L (Kingburger, eight oz.), XXL (Double King, 16 oz.) and XXXL (Triple King, 24 oz.). Ordering the XXL or XXXL does not get you a larger patty (each patty is eight oz.); only double or triple burgers do. I’d stick with either the M or L, and you’ll be fine.

Toppings like bacon, chili, or a fried egg are optional, but I would steer clear of them. Cheese is the only way to go, and if you absolutely must, then mustard and mayonnaise (UPDATE: I’m all about the mustard Only now). The meat is seasoned with a heavy hand on the pepper, which I like.

If the burgers aren’t enough, you can get a meal with onion rings, Fat Fries (thicker dinner fries), or skinny fries (shoestring fast food-type fries).

Or you can be like me and order the chili cheese fat fries. Sometimes I might get a chili cheese dog, turkey burger, or even the spicy chicken sandwich, but I always go back to the L burger.

The shakes are great too, but usually, I’m all out of room by the time I’m done eating.

Fatburger Is Now 60 Years Young

September 25th, 2012 – Fatburger is celebrating 60 years of being in business with “Secret” & “Special Prices” on specific menu items. Those items will take a DeLorean back to their original prices in 1952 when Fatburger opened up. But it’s not as simple as it sounds. For three consecutive Wednesdays, you must know what phrase to say to get the old-timer’s price.

Wednesday, September 26th: “Shake, Rattle & Roll” gets you an Oreo Shake for $2

Wednesday, October 3rd:
“What’s up Daddy-o?” gets you a small Fatburger for $1

Wednesday, October 10th:
“Fat City!” nets you a Medium Fatburger for $1.75

To find the nearest location to you, check out the Fatburger site. Unfortunately for us South Floridians, the Coral Gables and South Beach locations of Fatburger are now gone.

5 Questions With Fatburger CEO Andy Wiederhorn

March 30th, 2013 – I only watch Undercover Boss whenever they have a restaurant. But, for those who might not be familiar with it, the show’s premise is having a big corporate wig getting into disguise and working in his company doing everyday tasks for the business.

They will have the opportunity to see what goes on in the company and hear what is great about their company or where it might need bettering from the employees themselves.

On Friday, April 5th, 8/7c, you can catch the CEO of Fatburger, Andy Wiederhorn making fries, baking buns, and taking menu orders. He also learned a thing or two. I asked Andy Wiederhorn a few questions about his experience.

BB) How nervous were you?

AW – I was really nervous the first day that I went undercover as I thought that I would be discovered in my disguise. Also, I was worried about the jobs I was going to be performing and whether or not I would execute them correctly.

BB) Have you ever worked at one of the Fatburger locations?

AW – I have worked all of the positions in our test kitchen; however, I have never actually worked at one of our stores during regular business hours.

BB) Which station (making fries, baking buns, making burgers, and taking menu orders) was the hardest to keep up with as the restaurant filled up?

AW – The grill was by far the hardest task to keep up with. Being behind a hot grill and producing burgers at a quick pace is quite difficult!

BB) What did you learn from your Fatburger tour of duty in Undercover Boss?

AW – I learned that since becoming 99% franchisee operated, a lot of our franchisees were not recognizing our employees as we wished. As a result, I plan to reinstitute our employee recognition program so that everyone in the Fatburger family is honored and noticed for their efforts. Also, I plan to implement an idea exchange program where employees can send their suggestions to corporate. At the end of the day, our employees are some of our biggest advocates, and it is essential for them to feel appreciated.

BB) I usually have the L Burger with Cheese & Mustard ONLY. And you gotta get an order of Chili Cheese Fat Fries. So, how do you have your Fatburger?

AW – My favorite burger to get late at night is the classic Fatburger with a fried egg.

June 27th, 2013 – Unfortunate for us in South Florida, the 2 Fatburger locations (Coral Gables & Miami Beach) had closed up shop. Enter Fatburger’s Frozen Patties to keep your beefy desires at bay.

The 1/3 lb. Burgers come 6 to a pack and include instructions on the back for preparation. You will find the Fatburger Patties exclusively at 3100 Walmarts across the U.S.

I’m interested in trying these to see if they taste like Fatburger. If you get your hands on them, let me know how it goes.

1 thought on “Fatburger for a Kingburger & Some Chili Cheese Fat Fries”

  1. Fatburger…the best burgers here in Colorado and I think in the country. The burgers are thick and juicy. I love our new In n Out, but I have to order at least a 3 x 3 in order to get a good bite of meat. Fatburger will cook my burger a perfect medium rare ( I always ask for rare so it comes out medium rare). Also, upon my request, they will cook the bacon fresh for me so that it’s soft, not crispy. In addition to bacon and cheese, I order ketchup and grilled onions. What’s even better is that they have a choice of fat fries to skinny fries. I prefer fat fries, but my friend who I go with prefers skinny fries. At one time we had 5 Fatburgers in Colorado. The television personality Montel Williams owned them with some partners. Even though the article below does not mention it, I heard that someone working for Montel was deceptive with the money and that’s why he had to close 4 of the 5 locations. I’m glad that we still have one remaining.
