Grab a Slice from Mauro’s Pizza in Hollywood

I’ve driven past Mauro’s Pizza (1904 Hollywood Boulevard) in Hollywood for years and not even realized it. Well, one time, my brother-in-law was driving our weekly trip to Young Circle to set up the food truck event.

I took in the food sights on the way there. I can’t believe I had been so close to it all this time. It was not in the cards that week to hit them up, but this time, yes.

MAURO’S!!!

Mauro’s Pizza is CASH ONLY, but there’s an ATM, so they can still extract some extra moolah from you. It seems from what I read everywhere that service is borderline rude. I didn’t encounter that, but I was there at 3:30 PM on a Monday; no one was ahead of us when we walked in and ordered.

I go straight cheese slice, my wife Marcela decides on pepperoni, and I also order a ground beef for good measure. A slice will set you back about $3.00 and an extra buck for every additional topping. I pay and wait no more than five minutes for the slices.

The full toppings line up: Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, Bacon, Green Peppers, Anchovies, Black Olives, Onions, Pineapple, Ham, Ground Beef & Extra Cheese.

There are signs all over the place telling you things you can’t do. I don’t take offense to them. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. I worked in retail for over ten years, and no rules make for massive headaches.

I favor the POUR ON YOUR PLATE ***FIRST*** THEN ON YOUR PIZZA sign, lots of intricate stenciling going on there.

So how is Mauro’s Pizza?

These fellas are large and foldable. As you can see from the double plating under them, they are surprisingly big. The crust is crispy, the sauce is sweet, and it’s got the right amount of pooling grease to keep the pizza in the delicious zone.

I don’t know that I could tell you I preferred one over the other, but if you’re going to eat only one, then you should probably go cheese.

The ground beef slice had me in flashback mode. In the early ’80s, I would eat pizza from a joint in Westchester; I think it was called International Pizza. Their ground beef crumbles were very similar in look and taste to this.

Unfortunately, they eventually went out of business when Domino’s started spreading their tentacles around town. That’s one of the reasons why you should support locally-owned shops as often as you can.

Mauro’s has Medium, Large, and XL if you want to go the whole pie route. They’re open pretty late (till 4 AM on Sun-Tues & 5 AM on Wed-Sat) and deliver locally.
