You Know What’s Really Good? Week Of Monday June 17 – Friday June 23rd

For a little over 3 years I’ve written something called “You Know What’s Really Good?” whenever I came across one dish that I thought really stood out. While it’s the best way to point out something great without writing a full fledged post about it, it can be very limiting.

When restaurants that I frequent add new items or have one for a limited time I never get to capture it properly (if I do it’s on either my Instagram or Facebook pages). I thought I should do something that is kinda like my You Know What’s Really Good? with some of a weekly twist in for good measure.

So here is a short cut with the list of restaurants I visited:

Monday June 17th:

I met up for a late lunch with a friend at Tipsy Boar in downtown Hollywood. We ordered a bunch of dishes to try but the two that were nearest and dearest to my heart were the Philly Cheese Steak Croquettes and the Millionaire Bacon Burger.

Later that night my wife Marcela and I hit up Azucar Ice Cream Company in Little Havana and I had their Mantecado Shake. Mantecado is what’s known as Cuban Vanilla. I call it Cinnamon-y Vanilla. I think my nickname is a little more descriptive.

Tuesday June 18th:

I ended up at Steak & Shake in Hallandale at 1AM with my Marcela, @Chunktronics and Robyn from Palate Party. I somehow let her coerce me into ordering a 7×7 (7 Meat & 7 Cheese). I don’t need to tell you this was horrible idea at this time of the night but it did taste good.

In the afternoon I had a late breakfast with Wrectify at Latin American Bakery & Cafe and ate my usual staples there, Croquetas and a Pan con Tortilla.

Wednesday June 19th:

My morning started with a meeting finalizing all the details for the upcoming Frita Showdown at Magic City Casino. I always grab a quick bite at the Cafe in MCC. The Tostadas were extra good this morning.

I’ve got a bad addiction to A&G Burger Joint‘s Fire Chicken Tenders, must be all the endorphins they release when I bite into one. I had some of those fellas for dinner.

Thursday June 20th:

I hit up Munchies Cafe in Westchester after one of my sources* told me that they had excellent Croquetas & Pasteles de Guayaba. I didn’t end up trying their Pasteles but the Croquetas are great and had a little bit of sweetness on the tail end. The Palomilla Steak and Fresh Cut Fries were pretty good.

Pincho Factory had a Frita Egg Roll on the menu for one night only. It was filled with their homemade Chorizo with Swiss Cheese & Onions served with a Guava BBQ Sauce. They came two to an order and were served all fancy on a white plate. I could have popped these like Tic Tacs, they were that excellent.

Friday June 21st:

Again with the late lunches but this time at Islas Canarias Cafe where I always start with a few of their Award Winning Croquetas. Yes, that Milanesa de Res (Breaded Steak topped with their Tomato based Criollo Sauce, Ham and Melted Cheese) is gigantic. It is as decadent and incredible as it sounds. Some great Black Beans & Rice of which I could only have a few bites of after that Steak. I still went for their Opera dessert anyway. Opera is a Vanilla & Chocolate Poundcake with Hazelnut, Chocolate & Dulce de Leche Mousse, with some Kahlua mixed in. After 2 bites I was stuffed but I did take it home.

Saturday June 22nd:

Pretty much every Saturday morning around 10:30AM you can find me sitting at the counter at El Mago De Las Fritas. I will order a Large Cafe con Leche and a Tortilla Callejera (as a Sandwich or standalone sometimes).

The Callejera comes with Julienne Potatoes, Ham, Onions and Cheese. Saturday is Chicharrone Day at El Mago too and once the 2 batches he makes are gone, they’re gone (usually by 1 or 1:30PM).

Marcela and I went to Charm City Burger Company in Deerfield Beach for a real late dinner (around 11PM). She had the Hippie (a Veggie Burger) and I had the Emperor , their over the top take on a Patty Melt with Gruyere Cheese, Mushrooms and Truffled Aioli.

I washed it down with a Cinnamon Bun Blue Bell Shake. I was on a such a sugar high I could not fall asleep for the next few hours.

Sunday June 23rd:

A&G Burger Joint is in its 3rd week of Sunday Brunches so Marcela and I decided it was time to give it a try. If you can only have one dish then go with the Eggs in a Basket. When I cut into that Toast, the Egg yolk exploded with creamy chunky Sausage Gravy, as Bill & Ted would say it was….well you know.

Since it was the 6 month anniversary of A&G Burger Joint they also had 3 Food Trucks lined up outside (Killer Pasta, Los Chamos & Marlie’s Delights) as part of their celebration. I ordered a Chicken Parmesan with Red Sauce from Killer Pasta which I took home to have for dinner.

It’s unfortunate I ate this dish while watching True Blood which was a total disaster of an episode.
