Back in early September 2013 I met with South Beach Wine & Food Festival Director Lee Schrager for some ice cream at Azucar in Little Havana, he had been dying to try it. We were discussing food and events as we often do and the conversation switched to an event he wanted to do at Wynwood Walls but had yet to find the right idea. We were talking about my upcoming event Croquetapalooza when he mentioned he was really interested in doing a Cuban Sandwich event.
I had been toying with the idea for a Medianoches event called Midnight Medianoche Party which he loved. My version did not have cocktails but did have Churros & Hot Chocolate. Next thing you know we had a handshake agreement to work together on the event that would eventually become Botran’s Medianoches & Mixology At Wynwood Walls Presented By Smithfield Ham Hosted By Anne Burrell & Emilio Estefan, yes…quite a mouthful.
One thing about the handshake agreement since I got burned by one recently. I’m very old school and if you give me your word I expect you to keep it. Lee Schrager and the team at South Beach Food & Wine Food Festival are the real deal for the record.
I was the Chef/Culinary Manager for Medianoches & Mixology Event and working with the Event Manager Heidi Ladell. I felt we made a great team. I’m not sure many of you realize what a giant undertaking an event with 700 attendees is. Well, it is. It’s stressful but at the end of the day it’s great to see an idea for an event you have come to life.
Thanks to Lee Schrager for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Thanks to Heidi Ladell. it was great fun. Thanks of course to Azucar Ice Cream Company,Bread + Butter Counter, ChurroMania, Cuban Guys, Daddy’s Grill Cafe, El Exquisito, Islas Canarias, Latin House Grill, Los Bobos, Luis Galindo Latin American and Sweetness Bakeshop cummulatively known as mi gente. One last thank you to the Burger Beast team of my wife La Señora Beast and Chunktronics, those two made it happen on event night.
Food Network star Anne Burrell chose Luis Galindo Latin American’s take on the Classic Cuban Sandwich as her favorite sandwich of the night with Los Bobos coming in at 2nd and Cuban Guys at 3rd. While I am very for happy for the recognition they received, I was even happier that a bunch of out of towners got off the beach & had an opportunity to try the real Miami, because if you read the Burger Beast Blog then you already know, locals rule.
Check out what The Daily Meal had to say about Medianoches & Mixology.
My friends at at Miami Culinary Tours also attended Medianoches & Mixology.
