I jokingly asked everyone in social medialand (Facebook, Instagram & Twitter) if there was anyway that one of the 6 restaurants might sweep and not only win the Judge’s Award (known as the Best Frita en el Mundo) but also the GOYA People’s Choice Award. I didn’t really think it would happen but as my wife puts it, I was wrong. El Rey de las Fritas returned to Magic City Casino to defend their 2013 Frita Showdown win against Bread + Butter Counter, Cuban Guys, El Mago de las Fritas, FINKA Table & Tap and Latin House, stiff competition.
The judges Chef Richard Hales (BlackBrick, Dim Ssam a Gogo and Sakaya Kitchen), John Kunkel (CEO of 50 Eggs Inc – Khong River House, Lime Fresh Mexican Grill, Swine Southern and Yardbird), Roxanne Vargas (host of the NBC 6 lifestyle and entertainment show, “6 in the Mix”) and Jose Mendin (Chef/Partner of Pubbelly restaurants and the new L’echon Brasserie) and people in attendance spoke and the 40 year old El Rey de las Fritas was again The Best Frita En El Mundo.
If you were at the 2014 Frita Showdown then you sampled and enjoyed Cafe Bustelo, CAWY Soft Drinks (Materva & Jupiña), Fantastic Pastelitos, Gilbert’s Bakery, GOYA ‘s Malta & Chips, Pincho Factory, Rio Cristal, Sangria Don Chu, & Sweetness Bake Shop.
Big thanks to Julito Martinez and my guys Pinchadiscos 305 for killing it with the music.
And last but certainly not least Chef Reuben Ruiz for manning the No Kids Hungry table!
See you at the 2015 Frita Showdown….which is rumored to be taking place in the Garden State….
