Velvet Creme Doughnuts

Yes you read right, Velvet Creme Doughnuts will be back in early 2015. Originally opened by Jim Hadler in 1947 on 8th Street, Velvet Creme Doughnuts was iconic. Unfortunately both locations closed (a second UM location opened on June 19,1977), the UM location in July of 1996 & the original spot in 2000 due to illness in the family.

Since that time, Krispy Kreme has had free reign and shelf space at Supermarkets all over South Florida. As a kid of the 80s I remember Velvet Creme Doughnuts in their White & Red Boxes at Winn Dixie. The best part was that if you didn’t eat them when they were fresh, after a few days they were still excellent for dunking in your Cafe con Leche. My grandfather did that all the time.

In early 2015 expect the appearance of the Velvet Creme Doughnut & Coffee Food Truck. It will have Doughnuts (duh!) and feature their new signature line of Coffee. After the initial roll out of the truck they’re expected to set up Kiosks everywhere and then Stores shortly afterwards.

Round Johns anyone?

LOVED Velvet Creme (went to the one near UM). It’s where we hung out on the weekend late night in high school, and I used to eat 6 Long Johns for lunch . . . (when I was in perfect shape and could get away with it). The closest to it is the Long John at 7-11 near Gables High (but it’s custard inside).

OMG! I’m not into sweets but have many, many fond memories of hanging out at the Velvet Creme by UM. The French cruellers were my favorite back then. I called them tractor wheels.
