Burger Beast on the Road – March 2016

Posted on Posted in Alabama, Kentucky, Louisville, Montgomery, Nashville, North Florida, Tallahassee, Tennessee

I spent the better part of the last two weeks on a road trip with my friends the Miami Meat Machine (DaChew, DJ Cow Money & Gertherdriving around in a Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ loaned to me by Chevy (Thanks!).

Now that I got that shameless plug out of the way, let’s talk about all the spots we stopped in. I think it might be easier if I just listed the cities we stopped at and what attractions and/or restaurants we ate at.

Whataburger (Tallahassee, FL) – Stopped in for breakfast on the way to Nashville, TN where we stayed for two days. I ate the Jalapeño Cheddar Biscuit Sandwich w/Egg, Cheese & Sausage, it was a great little number.

Chris’ Hot Dogs (Montgomery, Alabama) – Chris’ Hot Dogs has been around since 1917. I tried the Fries & Onion Rings (pretty standard stuff) along with a Hot Dog (Mustard, Onion, Kraut & Chris’ Famous Chili Sauce) and a Cheese Burger (Fresh Beef Patty topped w/Mustard, Catsup, Onion & Chris’ Chili Sauce). I preferred the Cheese Burger, maybe because Chris’ Famous Chili Sauce reminds me of the Biff Burger Sauce (which is a great thing).

In Nashville we took in a few attractions Antique Archaeology (American Pickers TV Program), Cooter’s Dukes of Hazzard Museum, & Third Man Records (Jack White’s Record Store). All 3 are worth checking out and won’t really take up a bunch of your time.

And of course we hit up some Fast Food like Cookout (Shakes & Dogs), Jack in the Box (Sourdough Jacks), & White Castle (Sliders) plus Cori’s DogHouse, Hattie B’s, Mitchell Delicatessen and Peg Leg Porker.

I ate at Cori’s last year when I was in Nashville. The guys were tired from the drive so I went alone & grabbed a Cincinnati Dog with a fountain RC Cola, perfect combo. Hattie B’s was another spot I visited last year but now they have the Hot Chicken Sandwich. It was well worth the return visit for that alone.

Yes, the sandwiches at Mitchell Delicatessen are excellent but I was more amazed at the 5 draft Sprecher Craft Colas available with FREE refills. I know Gerther thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich too.

We went to Peg Leg Porker for some ‘Que and had the Full Rack of Dry Ribs & BBQ Sandwich (Pulled Pork w/Slaw) but what everyone really dug was the Memphis Sushi (Sausage, Cheese & Saltines Platter) and the BBQ Nachos (Cheese, Pulled Pork, Sauce & Jalapeños).

After leaving Nashville we drove through Louisville on our way to Columbus, Ohio. We stopped at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory since Gerther was looking to buy one of those mini bats for his son.

Probably the biggest surprise of the first half of the trip was how good Momma’s Mustard, Pickles & BBQ is. The Slider Sampler (Brisket, Pulled Chicken, Pulled Pork, Sausage & Turkey) was just incredible on those little sweet toasted buns. I loved the Sausage Sliders so much I took 10 to go which is a good thing cause we were starving the next morning. Momma’s Mashed Potatoes’ excellence deserves a mention.
