Burger Beast On The Road – Tallahassee 2016

Just a couple of months ago I stopped over in Tallahassee for breakfast at Whataburger on the way to Nashville. I wanted to come back and spend a couple of days taking the city and its food in.

My wife Marcela and I separated a few days at the end of a week on our schedules to spend there, I chose where exactly we’d be hitting up for grub. I’m also always thankful to all the Burger Beast readers and followers on social media who made suggestions.

On our first night we went straight to Voodoo Dog after dropping off our bags at our Air BnB home.

Marcela chose a Veggie Dog.

Me? A Bacon Wrapped Dog served on a Fried Egg, their Voodoo Chili Cheese Fries and the VooDoo Burger (topped with Polish Sausage). We were lucky to hit a big time winner on our first stop, their fountain Coke tasted horrible but they’ll get a pass on that since Mexican Coke Bottles were also available.

Donut Kingdom was another spot I missed out on my trip two months ago. We dropped in, grabbed a dozen Donuts and headed back to our cottage.

The Cream Cheese-Red Velvet was the “must have” of the bunch.

Merv’s is in a converted garage with seating outside or inside the old garage area complete with see through garage door panels. It serves a variety of sandwiches or “melts”, depending how fancy you wanna get with the wording.

The missus had the Frenchie which is perfect breakfast wrapped up in sandwich form on two French Toast buns. I thoroughly enjoyed a killer Patty Melt (with Mushrooms) and the One Eyed Jack (Eggs, Fried Chicken, Swiss Cheese & Apple Butter).

A full report on Merv’s is forthcoming this week.

Lindy’s Fried Chicken has been around since 1968 and has about 6 locations all around Tally. The folks were very friendly and accomodating as I pretty much ordered one of everything on the menu to try it.

My two favorites was the Fried Chicken Breast (crispy & juicy) and the Fried Chicken Sandwich, a nice & simple boneless Fried Chicken Breast sammy served on a soft squishy bun with Mayo.

Not only was Barb’s Southern Style Gourmet Brittles’ a great surprise to find, it was equally awesome that we had a great conversation with Barb about not only her business but about Burgers back in tha day.

The Brittles are available in bunch of varieties from Cookies to Truffles to being mixed into their house-made Ice Cream.

I went Chocolate Virgin since I’m not a Pecan fan. Marcela had her Brittle Ice Cream on a house-made cone, that’s the way to go.

We stayed in on the Friday night so I looked for somewhere that delivered. We had driven by Up In Smoke’s BBQ a few times and it looked pretty good.

I don’t find judging a restaurant by delivery fair BUT I can tell you these two things were absolutely killer, the Sweet Potato Casserole and the Smokehouse BBQ Burger.

First time driving by Dog Et Al I almost made a u-turn, what a great old school looking spot.

I snuck out while Marcela was taking a nap and made it just 15 minutes before closing time. I had to do the usual Chili Cheese Onion Mustard Dog , so I could compare to my favorites. Also, enjoyed the house-made Potato Chips, a Corn Dog and the deep fried Apple Pie.

A full report on Dog Et Al is forthcoming this week.

While we were having lunch at Merv’s a few days earlier I was eyeing a Food Trailer across the street named Kübano!

I did a little online investigating and knew this would be the last thing we ate before heading back to South Florida.

Marcela was not present so I needed to make a decision for her. She’s not the carnivore I am, so the all Saints Kubano (a veggie Cuban) seemed like the logical choice for her.

I couldn’t settle between their twists on the Elena Ruz and the Cuban (called Kubano) so I chose both. I actually went with the O-Line Kubano since it brought some Chorizo love to the sandwich.

A full report on Kübano! is forthcoming this week.
