It’s been years 5 years since I headed into Medley to eat, at Loven Ovens to be exact. I spent many summers in Medley working with my Dad on his WISE Potato Chips route.
Who remember’s Haney’s Market and their Grilled Cheese Sandwiches? Ok, enough of that…I’m getting off topic.
Plato’s Deli is located on the bottom floor of a two story building (it housed a Holsum Bread outlet store once upon a time). It’d be easy to drive by and miss it, a mistake you most definitely do not want to make.
James Collins, the fella behind Plato’s Deli attended Johnson & Wales and worked briefly at The Federal. This information I found out after the fact so I was not expecting the pleasant surprise this Deli had in store for my bud Mark and me.
I was a day late for the Frita Double but he still honored my request for one. This of course didn’t stop me from mentioning it was spelled wrong on the specials board, don’t mess with me and my Frita Cubana obsession. P.S. I better never see the word “Salad” anywhere near the word “Frita” in the future, this goes out to everyone reading this.
So Mark orders an Arepa with Chicken which he devours. He doesn’t even offer a bite to top it off.
On the opposite side of the spectrum I do offer him a bite of my Frita Double, only one though. This bad boy was so good there was no way I was sharing it with him.
The Chunky Lechon with its Roast Pork, Onions, Garlic Aioli, Swiss & Bacon, next leveled the classic Pan con Lechon sandwich. Mark actually hasn’t stopped talking about it. We did share this sammy (half for him and half for me) but he tried to talk me out of my half. Not happening.
If there’s a Cheesesteak on the menu then it must be ordered, so it is written in Burger Beast law. When it comes to Steak Sandwiches of all types I like to stick to Onions and sometimes Cheese. Well, this Philly LOVE had well seasoned Black Angus beef, Swiss Cheese, Bell Peppers, Mushrooms & Onions, in other words….a bunch of offensive ingredients. I didn’t complain though cause it was badass.
We were stuffed til he mentioned the house-made Red Velvet Truffles. I tried one and then asked, how many do you have? 23….OK….I’ll take 23.
Sorry to anyone who came in after us and wasn’t able to indulge.
James is still working on the menu and I have no doubt it’s only gonna get exponentially better, if that’s even possible. In the meantime, head over to Medley and check out a spot that most certainly deserves some South Florida love.
