Check Out Brad’s BBQ Every Tuesday Night in Surfside

What do you mean only Tuesdays? Yeah, that’s the way it goes. Chef Brad Kilgore who I’ve been watching via fellow bloggers’ Food for Thought and The Chowfather blogs for a while now is the man behind Brad’s BBQ. He’s taking over Josh’s Deli in Surfside every Tuesday night with some KC style BBQ (no I will not use the “Pop Up” buzz word even though I just did). I knew this was my opportunity to finally try his food in a much more casual setting so I was the first one to show up to Brad’s BBQ. I ordered one of every item on the menu including the dessert right out of the gate. I started my meal with a Dale’s Pale Ale and finished it with the Burger and my drug of choice, Coca Cola.

There were no misses on the menu but certainly some dishes excelled more than others. I really dug the bit of heat that crept up on you at the end of the BBQ Beans and the utter creaminess of the German style Potato Salad. Those crispy Onion Rings with the homemade Ranch Sauce were the big winner for me on the sides. And probably for the first time in history you will hear me say that something didn’t need Cheese melted on it, that would be the Maples Cheddar Jalapeño Cornbread. The Secret Spice Fries were good but I’ll tell you a secret about them, don’t eat them if you can’t handle heat. After just a handful of Fries, I felt beads of sweat forming on my forehead. Did I tell you I love beads of sweat forming on my forehead? Not really but I love the release of endorphins associated with heat in food.

The Beer Brined Half Chicken was as moist and flavorful as you can hope for. I loved the skin on it too. The Ribs while not fall of the bone (something I don’t really care about) were chock full of smokiness. I did use a couple of fries to scoop up the smoked on BBQ Sauce from all over the half rack as a dipping sauce. Now, the Pepper Crusted Beef Brisket with some White Bread hidden under it was phenomenal. So good in fact that you should just walk in and say I’d like the Brisket before you even place your drink order. It was also the first thing to sell out that night from what I saw via Twitter. And last but not least we come to the Black Angus Burger with Burnt Ends, Provolone Cheese, Cole Slaw and Butter Pickles. I’m not a fan of a bunch of things on my Burger. I certainly tried it as Chef Kilgore had intended but for me once I stripped away the Cole Slaw and Butter Pickles it was a much better Burger. And how could it not be with the Meat on Meat action going on, and no I’m not talking abut some Spartacus film. The buttery Bun he used was excellent too. The next time Cheese & Meat only and maybe a sliver of Brisket if I behave.

I thought the Fudge Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream was just some throwaway added last minute in case someone had space after the meal. I was very wrong. It could be and might be the Best Brownie with Ice Cream I’ve ever had. Yes, that means you must save space and get this fella or lady (if you’re a feminist).

Brad’s BBQ is worth the visit and/or drive. It’s important to note that we don’t know how long this will be going on so don’t add this to your long list of could have beens, your stomach will hate you for it.

National Hamburger Month Food Truck Competition Results And Pictures

Last night was the 3rd Annual National Hamburger Month edition of the Wheelin’ Dealin’ Street Food Festival at Magic City Casino. All the Food Trucks attending were given the task of coming up with a Burger for the event. The Dessert Trucks were not off the hook either as they had to come up with a Themed Dessert. And yes this was a competition to see who has the “Best Burger” and “Best Themed Dessert”! Two notes that were important to point out: Purple People Eatery plated their Burger beautifully and you gotta give Pescado’s Unidos some extra credit for even attempting to make a Beef Burger from their Seafood only Food Truck.

Bite Gastrotruck won “Best Burger” with their BAMF Burger and HipPOPs Handcrafted Gelato Bars took home the “Best Themed Dessert” title with their HGB Burger. I did not judge the event but the Best Burger I tried was Friar Tuck’s Angry Scotsman (yes, that means you must try it!). A special thanks to  judges Chef Danny Serfer of Blue CollarThe Chowfather & Trina Sargalski of Miami Dish who sampled every single one of the Burgers and Desserts. You may not believe it but the job is more difficult than it sounds.

The pictures below were taken by my wife Marcela while she was roaming the event or at the Judge’s Table by me. See you at next year’s 4th Annual National Hamburger Month Food Truck Competition!

Burger King Rib Sandwich Is Coming For Summer

Burger King Rib Sandwich

Last year Burger King’s Summertime Menu included a Bacon Sundae but they seem intent on topping that this year with the introduction of the Burger King Rib Sandwich. An obvious copy of the popular McDonald’s McRib Sandwich, the Burger King version will be available starting May 21st through the end of the summer along with the return of a line of Memphis Pulled Pork Sandwiches and Sweet Potato Fries. The Burger King Rib Sandwich was tested in Shreveport, Louisiana and did very well there. Let’s not forget Burger King also had those Fire Grilled bone in Ribs a few years ago that were pretty good considering where you were getting them from. I’m not a fan of the McRib so I’m definitely interested to see how this stacks up against it.

I Thought The Original Shake Shack Stand Wasn’t Real

Shake Shack Original

Yes, that’s the original Shake Shack Hot Dog Cart which they wheeled out every summer between 2001-2003 in New York City’s Madison Square Park. In 2004 the actual Shake Shack was opened and then mania ensued. Until Shake Shack posted this picture just a few weeks ago I was beginning to think that there never was a cart and that they were just trying to give themselves some street cred. Oh well, I was wrong. And who needs street creed when you have the Shack Burger anyway?

You Down With OTC Restaurant In Brickell, Yeah You Know Me

You down with OTC? (Yeah you know me)
You down with OTC? (Yeah you know me)
You down with OTC? (Yeah you know me)
Who’s down with OTC? (Every last homie)

I ate at OTC earlier this year and was blown away by it. I decided against writing about it because the pictures I snapped were a little too grainy and I didn’t think they did the food any justice. It took me a little bit to return but I’m back. I chose to skip the Mexican Coke this time around and had a Brooklyn Lager on tap instead.

Brooklyn Lager

Brooklyn Lager

Much like myself, OTC is about the comfort food. The Menu isn’t very large and is divided into several categories like Mac n’ Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Sandwiches and my favorite Salads. Everything is meant for sharing and is served on cutting boards and mini cast iron skillets. You must resist the urge to pick one up to move it or face the consequences. I almost did when I was shuffling around the dishes on my table.

The Chicken Fingers are breaded in Panko Breadcrumbs and fried crispy. They were excellent with the house made ketchup which had a very earthy taste, not my usual cup of tea but I loved it. The La Frieda Beef Slider is topped with a Quail Egg, Bacon and their Cheese sauce. In case you’re not familiar with what La Frieda is a reference to, you may want to read up on them if you’re a fan of beef. The simple answer is they’re a very well known meat wholesaler from New York/New Jersey area who create custom blends of beef for many high profile customers (including Shake Shack). They are just starting to break into the South Florida market and OTC is one of the few places you can find them. Now that you know that, it shouldn’t surprise you how phenomenal the Beef Slider is. They came in a set of 3. Two of the sliders had baby gherkins speared through the top while the other had a breaded & deep fried Bacon garnishing it.

Now onto my favorites dishes at OTC, the Braised Short Rib and the Chicken Parmesan Grilled Cheese. If you’re going to only order two dishes then I’d suggest these guys. This giant hunk of tender Short Rib could be one of the eight wonders of the world. One bite and you’ll rethink sharing it with anyone else, at least I did. On my first visit to OTC I ate the Chicken Parmesan Grilled Cheese and liked it so much that I ordered a second one a few bites into it. Nothing has changed, I love this guy. The Tomato Confit with the fresh Mozz on this sandwich has me mesmerized. If this Grilled Cheese was a dictator and asked me to help it take over the world, I would. On the healthier tip I also enjoyed the Roasted Mushrooms. They make a great side dish for the Braised Short Rib.

Hey, what do you know, they have plates here. I’m not sure that this jar can contain the amazingness of this Key Lime Pie. It’s just the right amount of tart.
