Let’s get something out of the way right from the start, El Corral is a fast food joint. There is a twist here though, you can either choose the Corral Burger (4.4 oz.) cooked on a griddle/flat top or the Grand Corral (8 oz.) which is grilled on an open flame.
The staff member who took my order insisted that I get the Char Grilled Burger because it would be the most flavorful according to him. After some consideration I decide to try one of each Burger with Cheese & Bacon. I never specified which Cheese I wanted but it appears Mozzarella is the default Cheese here. An order of Fries and Onion Rings rounded out my order.
The table I sat at was decorated with old newspaper ads, very reminiscent of how Wendy’s tables were in the 1980′s.
The Fries were of the frozen variety but were salted properly, nothing a little Ketchup couldn’t cure. The Onion Rings were very crispy and reminded me of the Onion Rings from Burger King back when they were still edible.
I ditched the Lettuce, Tomato and Onion on both Burgers. The Cheese as I had mentioned earlier was Mozzarella and it was melted. It stretched when I was taking bites from the Burger, in other words it did it’s job. The Bacon was diced up and not ultra crispy. I would go sans Bacon if I had it to do all over again.
Which was the best of the two? I’d say the Griddled won over the Grilled in this case. They both also had the Fast Food Burger Sauces (Ketchup, Mustard & Mayo) all over the them (Ketchup & Mayo on the Top Bun and Mustard on the Patty). Both were better than what you’ll find at the Big 3 but Shake Shack it’s not.
Get ‘Em Grilled or Griddled:
Saturday afternoon (January 26th) I was in Ave Maria, Florida judging the 3rd Annual Sunshine Steak Cook-Off in Ave Maria, Florida. No gas grills were allowed so these 16 oz Rib eyes were either smoked or grilled over charcoal (or both). The winner of the competition would not only win $1000 and the trophy but move onto the World Food Championships in Las Vegas later this year, so this was serious business.
I made sure to snap pictures of all 21 participating steaks so you could see how different they were. There were 7 judges and each judge was given a Steak sliver to judge:
The Judges’ Steaks:
You could of course also attend the event as there were plenty of family entertainment going on too but the $18 meal was the main attraction. It included a 16oz. Boneless Ribeye Steak (from the vendor of your choice), Baked Potato, Roll, Salad and Drink. Over 3000 steaks were cooked and all for a good cause (Scholarship Fund for the children from Immokalee, FL).
Make sure to check out the Sunshine State Steak Cook-Off Website in case you’ve got what it takes to compete next year.
If you haven’t decided what you’re doing for Super Bowl Sunday then this might be the deal for you! Latin House Burger & Taco Bar is having an ALL YOU CAN EAT & DRINK extravaganza for $50 per person:
Muffin Top Burgers (Cuban & American Versions)
LHG Wings (3 Flavors)
Love Bites (Chicken Breast Tender Chunks)
Sneaky Nachos (No Protein)
LHG Curly Fries
And because they’re assuming you’re also gonna watch the game, not only will their TV screens be on the game inside the restaurant but there’s gonna be a giant screen outside too. Doors open at 5PM and save me some Chili.
You Know The Deal:
Shake Shack’s got a couple of new items you can check out. “The Dapper Dog is a Vienna all-beef hot dog topped with Shack cheddar and American cheese sauce and crispy ShackMeister Ale marinated shallots.” Also a house made & seasonal Blood Orange Lemonade. Not sure exactly how long these folks will be on the menu but both items are available at all U.S. Shake Shack locations.
Dog It Up:
Shake Shack – South Beach
1111 Lincoln Road (at Lenox Avenue), Miami Beach, FL
Shake Shack – Coral Gables
1450 South Dixie Highway Coral Gables, FL
The Flying Saucer Food Truck (one of my favorites) who retired close to a year ago is making a comeback….kinda. On Super Bowl Sunday (February 3rd) they will be returning via a Pop-Up at Pincho Factory. Chicken Wings will be 75 cents, Chicken Strips will be $1 each, there will be 10 of their sauces to choose from and Beer Specials all day.
And Pincho Factory is mentioning the possibility of the Flying Saucer’s Philly Cheese Steak making an appearance too. There are also some package deals but you’ll need to call to find out about those.

I had lunch at the Shake Shack in the newer Coral Gables location, no real surprise there but this time I chose to watch down the burger goodness with a MGFD Home Brew. It’s the newish craft beer from Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink restaurant. It was very fucking good. Whoops! I meant to say great instead of good.
