Food Junkies – Miami Food Truck

If you are easily overwhelmed by too many options at a food truck roundup, the event at Seminole Casino Hollywood might just be for you. There were 10 trucks, all serving different food and I decided on the one with the longest line.

Food Junkies not only had the longest line when I arrived at the event, they had the longest line the whole time I was there. It has to be said, I was there a long time because the food took about 30 minutes or so to come out of the window. They disclose this with a blurb on their menu, they state that their food is made fresh and ask for the patience of their customers. Boy, were we patient.

Reading the menu you get the idea that the food is a combination of Island and Comfort – two of my favs! They carry some Conch, Shrimp and Fish dishes as well as dishes like Chicken and Waffles. They also have some freshly baked goods and a super secret punch that I believe is made after a delicious Caribbean drink recipe, but you didn’t hear that from me!

I finally got to the front of the window, ordered and waited what seemed like an eternity for the following delicious menu items.

Fried Chicken and Red Velvet Waffles

I have to say, I’m not one for this kind of dish but the Food Junkies did it right. The Waffle was the perfect “Plate” to catch the Chicken and Maple Flavor. The Wings on this dish were amazing. As I sit here and write about them, I detect some drool collecting. They were cooked perfectly!

Next up I took a few bites of their enormous side of Seafood Slaw! Seriously, for 10 dollars I could have had this side dish as my meal and called it a night! The Coleslaw was fresh and tasted homemade and the Seafood in it was delicious! Definitely worth the $10!

Next up (I know, I can’t believe I ate so much) was the Conch Balls. We all know these as Conch Fritters and they are rarely anything to write home about. The main difference in the Conch Balls from the Food Junkies is that there is actually large chunk of delicious Conch in them!

Whew! I was waddling away from the Food Truck after this meal! Luckily I had their Super Secret Punch to wash it all down with. It’s so sweet. It’s almost as if you’re having dessert.

Everything off this truck was worth the wait, the staff were so appreciative of our patience. It made it all the more enjoyable of an experience.

If you can find this truck behind it’s epic line of food fans, do yourself a favor and give them a try!

If Richard Simmons had a Food Truck – Health Nut on Wheels

Ever wanted to know what healthy food truck options look like at an event? Well, here’s your inside view! The Health Nut on Wheels looks like a cross between a Live Strong ad and a recruitment poster for Cross Fit.

I made my way through calf high grass at the Wynwood lot dedicated to the roundup thrown by Sakaya Kitchen’s Richard Hales. This event has had a lot of controversy surrounding it, but month after month the trucks come and the people come hungry.

I arrived at the Healthnut on Wheels truck and was greeted by not one, but two lines and a 6ft high chalkboard where their menu was written.

To start, there are a few problems with using chalkboards for menus, 1 being the fact that they are easily smudged making them hard to read. The other problem with this particular menu is the way it was set up. It read in a pick one of option 1 and one from option 2 way but it had other options thrown in between. I ended up going to the window and asking questions anyway.

Once my menu questions were cleared up I decided on Siders, Sweet Potato Fries and a Turkey Burger “Paleo Style”. The Sliders were served open faced with Brie Cheese (my choice), topped with Tomato, Avocado, Sprouts and Romaine. The meat was pretty tasty although cooked unevenly; one was nice and pink in the middle and the other two were well done.

What’s a Burger meal without Fries on the side? The “Healthier” option here is Sweet Potato Fries. They were well cooked and nicely salted. The more you ate these, the more you wanted to eat.

Finally up on the dinner menu was a Turkey Burger atop a bed of Sautéed Veggies with a sort of Chunky Salad (Tomato and Avocado).

Despite the fact that nothing I ordered had any sort of sauce on it, the flavors were good. I saw a table set up with Ketchup but that’s not really what I wanted. Why not some Vinaigrette or Spicy Mmustard?

That’s really my only gripe with the Health Nut on Wheels. Their food is good, the portions are right and even though their prices are a little higher than the average truck I can see where the additional bucks go.

Bottom line is, if you went to the gym some night but end up at a Food Truck Event hit up the Health Nut on Wheels and walk away knowing it won’t show in your clothes the next day.

Go! Bento in Hollywood, Florida

Have you seen the Go! Moto truck at the Arts Park event I love so very much? I have! I recently gave them a try and pretty much discounted them as meh. But coming to their wooden benched, loud hip hop playing (the good kind — you know, from the 90′s) homemade food preparing restaurant, my faith in these guys has been restored.

The thing to get at Go! Bento is obvious, get a Bento Box!

No, I wasn’t calling you a name. A Bento is traditionally a Japanese meal of rice, meat and vegetables served in a box. This is similar to what we picture a TV dinner to look like. At Go! Bento they have these puppies in various sizes. Choose your main dish, maybe a Sushi Roll and a side and sit down on one of their benches, jam to their music and go to town on your Bento.

Go! Bento Bento box options

For like $12 – $15 bucks these guys can make you a decent meal! The other side of this menu reveals their Sushi and more traditional-looking menu items.

I went for the “Zilla” option which includes an entree and Sushi Roll. Then I tacked on the Rangoon.

Go! Bento Drunken Noodles

The Drunken Noodles were delicious! Perfectly cooked Egg Noodles, great amount of flavor and spice and there are a lot of tasty Shrimp in there!

Go! Bento Crab Rangoon

These Rangoon are not like your traditional Crab Rangoon, inside they hold a small but impressive flavor surprise – curry! I don’t know about you, but I have never had Rangoon with curry and I have had my fair share, I love these things!

Go! Bento Spicy Tuna Roll

Even though instinct told me to steer clear of Sushi, I had to try their Spicy Tuna Roll because it is one of my favorites and usually a good indicator for the rest of the sushi menu. While this roll is more “Americanized” and rice heavy than I usually enjoy it was really tasty and fresh!

Go! Bento Go Ninja Combo Plate

Oh yea, there’s more! This Ninja Bento (one entree and two sides) features Chicken Pad Thai, Wakame Salad and Egg Roll. The Pad Thai was not the best I’ve ever had but it was tasty. The star of this plate was the Egg Roll, weird I know. But have you ever had an Egg Roll that wasn’t frozen?! One that wasn’t full of tiny Salad Shrimp and the taste of frozen MSG? This Egg Roll actually tasted like fresh cabbage stuffed into a wrapper and fried just before I ordered it!

Go! Bento also has a food truck on the scene but sadly none of these tasty staples are featured on that menu and I don’t understand why? Go! Moto is the mobile version of Go! Bento, find my post about them here. I wish some of the menu items I enjoyed here were on that menu – a girl can dream.

Definitely check Go Bento out if you’re in the Hollywood area!

Waiting for a Sign? Killer Pasta has got a Big One!

The next time you’re at a food truck event don’t decide which trucks to approach based on their bright wraps or shiny graphics. Look for the truck with their whole menu posted on top of the roof! Once you find it you’ll know you’ve found some Killer Pasta!

I know, I know, your eye caught the Caramelized Pear Ravioli – right? If it did, good and if it didn’t you really should read the description again. This dish was balanced with just enough sweet and savory to make you wish Killer Pasta gave you more of their killer bread to dip their sauce in! Fine, if you need more convincing, just remember this dish has Pancetta (aka Italian bacon)!

Caramelized Pear Ravioli

Next up I opted for a classic dish of Penne a la Vodka. This heavy plate can fill the belly of the heartiest of pasta eaters. If you brought a friend I suggest splitting this dish and trying some other tasty items. After all, how often do you see an Italian food truck? My only beef with this dish was I wanted more sauce! It was a good sauce!

Penne a la Vodka

Don’t disregard that lemonade in the background folks. I was skeptical when the person who took my order said it was freshly squeezed but once my lips touched the tart and sweet beverage I knew his claims were legit! Kudos to trucks like these who take the time to make a fresh signature drink.

Also, if you’re not into canned or bottled soda, Killer Pasta has fountain! Come for the pasta, stay for the soda.
