The Original Miami Street Food Court – November 2010

Back in November of 2009 when the rumblings started that this new truck movement was making its way to Miami very few folks knew what to expect. I had seen and read about the scenes in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles and New York. I was excited to see what Miami was going to bring to the food truck scene.

I’d like to give honorable mentions to AC’s Icees who has been serving lemonades in Coconut Grove for over 30 years and Pincho Man who is the original Miami Food Truck megastar. Both are still around today.

The gastroPod ushered in the food truck revolution here in Miami with his temporary trailer nicknamed ‘The Shiny’ Twinkie. The 1960′s Airstream Trailer everyone recognizes today did not makes its debut until January 2010.

So Jeremiah had been planning gastroPod since late 2008 and it was almost a full year til his plans were realized. On November 3rd, 2009 Chef Jeremiah posted this comment on gastroPod’s Twitter account :

welcome everyone to Miami’s food revolution

Latin Burger & Taco (who at the time had Univision star Ingrid Hoffman behind it) and the Yellow Submarine followed not too long afterwards. Just a few short months later on September 12th, 2009 came the 1st Food Truck Event in South Florida, the Fall for the Arts Festival. It started the crazy of events which led to the original Miami Street Food Court (65th & Bird Road), B.T.T.R. (originally at 109th & Biscayne Blvd and then Johnson & Wales University) and the now legendary event Lexus of Kendall.

Last year the Miami Food Trucks set the Guinness World Record for “Largest Food Truck Parade” with 62 Food Trucks on Saturday April 20, 2013.

Today you can find the Miami Food Trucks heading up as north as Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach for events. At the moment the only recurring Dade County events are Palmetto Bay (every 1st Friday),  the Wheelin’ Dealin’ Street Food Festival (every 3rd Saturday) and the recently resurrected Miami Street Food Court at Tropical Park (every 4th Friday).
