OK Cafe In Atlanta, Georgia

OK Cafe has a very cool vibe to it. The minute we walked in I knew I’d like the place. We were seated under a giant money tree which has some creepy green dude hanging off of it. Looking through the menu I had already decided I was definitely going to go with the Bacon Cheeseburger with Cheddar cheese and a basket of Shaved Fried Onions. My 2 friends take the breakfast route, after all it is 9am.

John Breakfast

Isaac goes with 2 eggs over easy, sausage (which look like hockey pucks), toast and grits. John also has 2 eggs over easy with bacon, home fries and toast. Both of them love their breakfast. John raves about his bacon, which he lets me try. I am now raving about his bacon. We all thought the bacon was outstanding which is great because it’s on my burger.

Bacon Cheeseburger

The burger was great, the bun was tasty and the fries were good. The outstanding item I ordered was the basket of Shaved Fried Onions. Something really great was going in the seasoning of the onions.

On the way out or way in (depends I guess when you notice it) there’s a wall with caricatures of employees that have been with them for over 10 years.

And for those who don’t want to make the wait, there’s an area of freshly prepared food to go. The back of their menu proclaims no preservatives, fresh vegetables and hormone free meat. The quality is noticeable but my biggest regret was that I never ordered their mac n’ cheese. I think I may have been pushing the limits of breakfast if I had ordered that.

Abdullah The Butcher House Of Ribs And Chinese Food In Atlanta, Georgia

My interest in Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food lied solely in the fact that I watched wrestling in 1980s. Abdullah The Butcher was a character that scared me and interested me at the same time. Abdullah was known for being ultra violent in the ring and everyone of his matches ended up in a bloodbath. As a kid I thought wrestling might  be a cool job but I couldn’t envision being across the ring from some guy who wanted to grab a fork and jam it into my head to make me bleed.

So when I found about Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food, I knew I had to check this place out. The walls are lined with pics from wrestlers, a whole bunch of them autographed and a few of his championship belts.

I was with a few friends of mine who decided to split a whole slab of ribs. I order a Butcher Burger as well as a Chili Dog. We order some wings also, served Hot with fries.

Full Rack of Ribs

The ribs were good and I thought the BBQ sauce was outstanding. The guys seemed to like the ribs as well as the wings/fries too. Just when I thought I was going to get my Butcher Burger, I’m told they are out of burgers. They sub my burger for 2 more Chili Dogs which my buds inherit.

Chili Dog

I really liked the chili dog even though I’m not a big fan of beans in my chili. The fries were of the standard frozen variety but good. All of us felt the Wings were the best thing we tried on the menu.

Buffalo Wings

These things were hot, so much so that I was turning as red as some guy’s chest who Abdullah had just chopped.  After eating, I had to get up and walk around a bit. Those wings killed me.

I wanted to get picture of the sign outside but it was raining. I tell one of the guys , “I’m gonna take out the camera really quick and snap a pic of the sign”. When I hear, “Why you don’t you just take a picture of me?” I turn and look, my eyes are definitely not deceiving me, it’s Abdullah The Butcher! Turns out Abdullah is a pretty cool dude, but you better be nice if you don’t want to get your head bitten.

Burgers And More In Atlanta, Georgia

Thanks to my friend JC for sending his report:

This last December, during a visit to Atlanta to see my sister, we decided to go see the Georgia Aquarium. The Aquarium employs ticketing by appointment to control how many people are in attendance at any given time. When you buy a ticket you’re assigned a time at which you are allowed to enter the Aquarium. Our tickets are for 12:45 and we got there a little early so we have some time to kill. We decide it’s a good time to have lunch and start looking for a place to eat. Outside of the parking garage the pickings look slim.

There are two options across the street, a place made to look like a diner and a hole in the wall dump next door. We decide on the diner. Once across the street we find the diner is closed, but they open in 15 minutes. I take a peek at the menu and find its upscale diner food. In my experience that never seems to work out right and I’m in no mood for this b.s. We decide to take a look at the dump next door to see what’s doing.

The place is called Burgers & More and expectations are low. When we open the door and go inside we find…drum roll please…a super clean place with comfortable dining room. Did I mention this place is super clean, because it really is very well kept. The floor is highly polished and the kitchen equipment looks like it was installed yesterday. I’m impressed, this place is super clean. Not at all what I would have expected from the outside.

Given the name I suspect burgers are the thing to order here. They’ve got your standards: cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, swiss and mushroom, bbq bacon, etc. They look pretty good. The “More” part of the menu are gyros, philly steak and chicken subs, deli sandwiches made with Boar’s Head products, salads, etc. We order: a basket of wings, a basket of sweet potato fries, a tuna sandwich and a basket of chicken fingers.  I didn’t order a burger and I regret it. I saw one at another table and it looked great. An unfortunate decision and I’ll have to deal with it for the rest of my life.

We’re assigned a number and find a table to wait for the food. They’ve got a load of flat screens around. Some have ESPN and some have CNN (we are within walking distance of CNN HQ). My kid decides he’s got to pee so I take him to the bathroom. Surprisingly, the bathroom is super-duper clean too. They’ve covered all points, 360 degrees of cleanliness, I’m amazed. Our number is called and I retrieve the food.

My wife has the tuna sandwich. I’m offered a bite and I take it. Nothing earth shattering, but its tasty and a good value. My kid has a basket of chicken fingers. They look good to me so I swipe a little piece (Daddy Tax). The flavor is good. They’re frying in clean, fresh oil. These probably came out of a bag but they’re tasty – and a good value. Who am I to complain?

I ordered the basket of wings. They are on the smaller end of the scale. Not breaded. The sauce is decent, no big deal. The chicken is cooked well, the flavor is nice. The sauce is smokey and sweet, probably chipotle or ancho based. I like ‘em. Again, nothing earth shattering, but a good value and damn tasty.

The kid’s chicken fingers come with french fries. They’re pretty darn good. They look fresh cut but I suspect they’re from a freezer bag. Not bad, guess what – they’re tasty and a good value. The sweet potato fries look fresh but, like the french fries, I’m not so sure. They are super tasty, very nicely seasoned. My favorite thing on the table.

The place is super clean and there’s something on the menu for everyone. They need to work on the facade, I think they’ll attract a few more customers from across the street that way. I liked it!

Ann’s Snack Bar In Atlanta, Georgia

It’s a pretty safe bet that if you act up at Ann’s Snack Bar, you will either be told to settle down or be told to leave. For the uninformed, Ann has some strict rules which if you don’t follow will get you tossed out of her place. No cursing is a big one and no cell phone usage is another. Due to my fear of possibly offending her and getting kicked out without eating, all pictures were taken on the sly.

Ann At Work

The guy sitting a few seats down from me was told to stop using his phone twice before he thought better of it and used it outside, which still pissed Ann off. The lady who was in line right in front of us, told us how she had seen Ann once shout at a disruptive customer  and them them “if you don’t like my rules you can go to Checkers ” (which happens to be a few shops down) .

Ghetto Burger Sign Ouside

We arrived 15 minutes before 11am, hoping to be the first in line to eat at Ann’s. There were already 3 people in line. Ann did not open up until 11:20 AM, totally oblivious to the fact that we had been waiting outside (I found this rather amusing). Eating here is an experience in itself. I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere before but it really is as if you are in someone’s kitchen while your lunch is being prepared. She does it all.

Chili Cheese Fries

My friends John and Isaac ordered fries while I ordered the chili cheese fries. Some of the best chili cheese fries I’ve had and most definitely one of the best chili (Top 3 of all time).

Cheese Burger

Chili Cheese Dog

They both had the regular Cheeseburger while I went with the Chili Cheese Dog.  John and I end up splitting each others meal which worked out well for both of us. Both were glorious. The signature burger here is the Ghetto Burger.

Droolius donated a pic of his Ghetto Burger (2 giant patties with bacon, cheese and her homemade chili). If you’re in Atlanta, make the time to visit Ann’s Snack Bar, at times there may be a wait, but well worth every minute.

Burger Beast Visits Atlanta Day 3

The day started with us at Ann’s Snack Bar where we were in constant fear of getting kicked out (more on that when the review goes up), great burgers. Followed by Top Chef Richard Blais’ Flip Burger Boutique, wow bad times. We also checked out the Zesto Drive In and capped off the night with the Vortex and a pretty spectacular burger. We’ll be back in Miami tomorrow night, hopefully, we’ll got one more review in on the way back.

Burger Beast Visits Atlanta Day 2

My friend John with Abdullah the Butcher

So we started off with the OK Cafe this morning, great place, thanks to GhenghisJuan for the suggestion. Checked out the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coke, could not park at Burgers & More. Decided to Check out Abdullah The Butchers‘ House of Ribs and Chinese Food and we met Abdullah the Butcher. Closed out the night at Big Pie In The Sky, made famous by Man v. Food. Tried a smaller version of the Carnivore. Be back tomorrow with another update.
