Gator Burger At The Pit BarBQ In Miami, Florida

The Pit Bar-B-Q is a Historical landmark. Hey, I didn’t know that but it says it right on their menu. The Pit stands out on a long stretch of 8th Street with nothing on either side of it. You can either sit inside (it’s not too big) or outside under their Tiki-like canopy. Regardless of where you might sit, the unmistakable smell of BBQ is everywhere.

The one thing that struck me was the amount of Cuban dishes on the “Pit Starters” menu. There’s Masitas de Puerco (Fried Pork Chunks), Fried Yuca con Mojo (Cassava), Tostones (Fried Green Plantains) & Maduros (Fried Sweet Plantains). You can order individual or family size portions but I was here for one thing, the Famous “Gator Burger”.

On the menu, the translation is “Hamburguesa de Cocodrilo” which would be Crocodile Burger. I can see why they went with the Gator Burger name. The server suggests I add cheese because the gator meat can be a little dry.

While I didn’t find it to be dry, it did seem to have a little bit of heat mixed into it. The flavor of the burger can be best described as Chicken, just kidding. It actually tastes like a spiced up Turkey Burger. The American Cheese was really a non-factor but the smoke (since it was cooked in their wood burning pit bbq) was present throughout the taste of the burger. I can’t say that I was enamored with it nor longing to have another one. If you ever find yourself on the side of the road on 8th Street and need a Gator fix, then this might be the place for you.

Q American Barbeque In Miami Design District, Florida

Q Barbecue

While I’m no Barbecue expert, I know good food when I taste it. Q American Barbeque is located in the Miami Design District and has a comfy (Yes, I really did just say comfy) look to it. I felt right at home when I walked in (it didn’t hurt that some blues music was playing).

I ordered some Wings which were crispy and had an intense smokey BBQ flavor. They were delicious. None of the food at Q is smothered in sauces by the way, that’s up to you. This is dry rub terrain.

The Sauces At Q

The Sauces At Q

Your options are St. Louis Cider Mustard (sweet, thick and very mustardy), Memphis Dark Sugar & Vinegar (sweet), Guava Habanero Parilla (liquidy, smokey and slightly sweet) and KC Light Tomato & Spice (vinegary tomato). After trying all of them a couple of times I settled on using the St. Louis Cider Mustard. Were wings enough? Of course not, so I also had the NC Pulled Pork Sliders. The Sliders were served on Potato Rolls and topped with Cole Slaw.

They were right on but I now had my sites set on the Q Burger. If you’re also a Soda aficionado like myself you will appreciate the fact that Q has Coke (Mexican) , RC Cola, Orange Crush, Dr. Pepper and a few other glass bottled sodas. Now back to the main event…..The Q Burger is a 10 ounce Burger topped with Cheddar, Pit Roasted Onions and served on an Onion Roll. I, of course added some Applewood Bacon to it.

There’s nothing better than eating a Burger and having the freshness of the beef come right through. It had a nice smoke flavor and the taste of the Bacon was really pronounced.  Q really was a majestic Burger. I came back a few days later and shared Q Zilla (2 Spare Ribs, 2 Baby Backs, 1/2 Pit Chicken, 1/2 Pound of Pulled Pork, Cole Slaw, Pit Beans, House Made Pickles and Cornbread) with my wife. I was floored by Q’s food and I think you might be too.

Tom Jenkins’ BarBQ In Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

We met a crew of bloggers which included Beth aka The French Fry Fairy at Tom Jenkins’ Bar-B-Q. MY wife Marcela and I arrive late (our new thing). When we walk in a few folks are already sitting down with their food while everyone else is receiving theirs. After looking over the menu we decide to do the ol’ divide and conquer routine and order 2 different things. Marcela orders the Beef Brisket w/Mac n Cheese and Coleslaw (it also brings a cornbread).

Brisket Platter

I had the Rib & Chicken Combo with Mac n’ Cheese and Fries (cornbread also). We also got 4 hush puppies (their minimum hush puppie order). Marcela did not like her Beef Brisket and after trying it I agreed. It was way fatty. The Mac n’ Cheese was good, she liked the cole slaw and the fries were ok. The ribs were acceptable but the chicken was on the amazing side.

Chicken & Ribs

I regret not going with Baby Back Ribs though. The hush puppies were really good also. After talking to one of the guys, he told me that pork was the way to go at Tom Jenkins’. I wish this conversation had taken place before we got here. Doc Brown anywhere?

Peoples Bar B Que In Miami, Florida

My wife Marcela and I had heard so many good things about Peoples Bar-B-Que that we expected to be dazzled not disappointed. The building it’s house in is a bit run down and there really wasn’t any discernible sign that I could see to let you know we were at the right place. Once you walk in, there’s a take-away area with prepared foods, the cash register and then the counter. We went up to the counter to get a menu and took a seat. We looked around and saw that some people just ordered at the counter so I’m assuming you could do either.

Marcela decides to go with some Chicken & Ribs, a side of Mac n Cheese and Mashed Potatoes. All meals are served with their Cornbread. I order their Cheeseburger and some Hot Wings with Fries. The Burger was way too salty as if it had been salted after it was cooked. It was pretty bad.

Peoples BarBQue Cheeseburger

The Wings, which were served with the Hot Sauce on the side were ok and the Fries were just plain oily.

Peoples BarBQue Wings & Fries

The Cornbread which I had heard so much about tasted very bland.

Peoples BarBQue Cornbread

Marcela’s Mac n Cheese was good but the Mashed Potatoes and Gravy were killer, best thing we had. The Ribs were another story, I found them to be inedible. Marcela didn’t like them either.

Peoples BarBQue Chicken & Ribs

The weirdest thing was when the plate was placed in front of her I thought the Ribs with the BBQ Sauce all over them reminded of something but I just couldn’t pinpoint what it was. Just as I was writing this it came to me. If you ever watched the show Get A Life you’ll know what I’m talking about. Take a look at the picture and tell me that it doesn’t remind you of when Gus (Chris’ landlord) makes ribs out of the alien Spewey. And if you haven’t watched Get A Life before, then get to it, you’re out of the loop.

Almost Famous Mel’s In Marco Island, Florida

Almost Famous Mel's Sign

Almost Famous Mel’s was probably one of the best places I ate at last year. I didn’t really take pictures because at the time, the birth of the Burger Beast site was a few months away. I spent all of last week at Marco Island so I decided to eat here again a couple of times with my family so I could: 1) Enjoy its greatness and 2) Take some pictures.

Outdoor Area

Outdoor Area

Who are we kidding? I just wanted to eat here again. Once my wife Marcela and I arrived in Marco Island the first thing we did was head out to Mel’s. I wanted to order one of their Hot Dogs but since it was after 4pm (no Wieners after 4) , that wasn’t going to be a possibility. We ordered the “Throw Down The Gauntlet” which I tried last year and loved (on the original post I couldn’t remember its name, it wasn’t even on the menu yet).

The Gauntlet

The Gauntlet

The Gauntlet is plate of fresh cut Fries with Nacho Cheese, Jalapeños, Pulled Pork and Chili. We also ordered the Wings but this time there were a variety of sauces available: Mel’s Way, Big Jon’s, Hot & Happy, Honey and Frank’s Red Hot. We were brought a sampling of all the Sauces and a few pieces of Cornbread with which to try them.

Cornbread

Cornbread

The Mel’s Way, Big Jon’s and Hot & Happy all tasted pretty similar but we went with Big Jon’s because it had a nice mix of BBQ and heat, the Cornbread was pretty good too. The Wings were good but nothing special. I decide to order the Michigan Burger (slab of Ham and Jack Cheese) and Marcela goes with the Burnt Ends (Burnt Brisket Ends and Ham).

Burnt Ends

I still think the Burnt Ends is the best thing on the menu (and I still think that Mac N Cheese is pretty lame) followed by a close second of Throw Down The Gauntlet. The Michigan was very good and contained no Burger at all which was weird, it was like a giant Ham and Cheese sandwich.

Michigan Burger

Michigan Burger

Two days later I was back with my sister Michelle, this time before 4pm. I was able to order the Chili & Cheese Dog and the Tex Mex Burger (Chipotle Sauce, Bacon and Cheddar). While we’re discussing with the waitress my previous time there, I mention the Michigan Burger. She tells me that it indeed should have had a Burger in it (well that makes sense). She mentions this to Mel, who comes to our table to apologize for the mistake, very nice guy by the way.

Tex Mex Burger

That Chili & Cheese Dog was so smothered in Chili we had to use a fork and knife to eat it. It was great but the taste of the Dog was way overpowered by the Chili. The Tex-Mex Burger was really moist and tasted way better than I remember last year. I notice the Menu mentions that it’s never frozen Angus beef which I think last year’s Menu did not claim.

Original Post 10/13/08:

Not far from where I was staying in Marco Island is Almost Famous Mel’s South Beach Smokehouse-BBQ. Not very original as far as decor goes but when I walked in I felt like I was on vacation and as if I should be hearing Bob Marley over the airwaves, instead I had to settle for some guy trying out his favorite tunes on his guitar with cheezy keyboard accompaniment. We ordered a new appetizer created by Mel(the owner) which name escapes me at this moment (Fries with with Chili, Pulled Pork, Nacho Cheese and Jalapeños).

Fries

Chili Cheese Pulled Pork Fries w/Jalapeños

And even though by looking at it you might think it looks disgusting it tastes pretty amazing, the Pulled Pork was outstanding. We also ordered Bo’s Chicken Wings (Wings drenched in Frank’s Red Hot) which were just average. I ordered the Big House (Burger with Bacon, Mushrooms and Cheddar Cheese) and thought it was ok considering this was a “Smokehouse” the Burger did not have a strong smoky flavor. The sides I had were Mom’s Mac & Cheese (If this is mom’s mac and cheese, I’ll take an order of my dad’s mistress’ mac and cheese) and Crispy Fried Onion Strings (pretty good and a large portion). The waitress also brought a piece of their Corn Bread drizzled in Honey Butter…..uh yeah, delicious. Marcela had the Burnt Ends (Crispy Burnt Brisket Ends & Ham), now these little fellas were stunning. The Burnt Ends were probably the best item on the menu and it’s a real shame because I really thought the Burger was going to be sensational.

Koky’s Barbecue Steak Ranch In Hialeah, Florida

I can’t believe this place has been around since 1976. As a kid I used to eat dinner at Koky’s Barbecue Steak Ranch with my family once or twice a month. Not much has changed at this place. It’s still a bit of a dive but maybe that’s why it’s still around.

Inside of Koky’s

Or, it could be because the prices are relatively low in comparison to other food places, which would explain a thing or two. My wife Marcela decides to go with an order of Baby Back Ribs. I order the Jumbo Double Cheese Burger with Fries and we also order some Wings and a couple of Corn on the Cobs. The Jumbo Double Cheese Burger is in fact not jumbo, it got lost in the bun. As far as flavor is concerned, it reminds of a Burger King patty.

Double Cheeseburger

The Wings were slightly undercooked. The oddest thing was they were not Grilled or Fried. Leaving only the dreaded Oven Baked or Microwaved options, which is what I’m leaning towards.

Wings

The Corn, well it was corn and it was really bland even after we added Butter and Salt. Marcela’s Baby Back Ribs were a travesty.

Baby Back Ribs

There is no way they were made today. The Ribs were so dry they must have been reheated. That’s the feeling I get about Koky’s, nothing appears to be fresh. The only thing I thought was good was their Fries, but man can not survive on Fries alone.

Abdullah The Butcher House Of Ribs And Chinese Food In Atlanta, Georgia

My interest in Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food lied solely in the fact that I watched wrestling in 1980s. Abdullah The Butcher was a character that scared me and interested me at the same time. Abdullah was known for being ultra violent in the ring and everyone of his matches ended up in a bloodbath. As a kid I thought wrestling might  be a cool job but I couldn’t envision being across the ring from some guy who wanted to grab a fork and jam it into my head to make me bleed.

So when I found about Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food, I knew I had to check this place out. The walls are lined with pics from wrestlers, a whole bunch of them autographed and a few of his championship belts.

I was with a few friends of mine who decided to split a whole slab of ribs. I order a Butcher Burger as well as a Chili Dog. We order some wings also, served Hot with fries.

Full Rack of Ribs

The ribs were good and I thought the BBQ sauce was outstanding. The guys seemed to like the ribs as well as the wings/fries too. Just when I thought I was going to get my Butcher Burger, I’m told they are out of burgers. They sub my burger for 2 more Chili Dogs which my buds inherit.

Chili Dog

I really liked the chili dog even though I’m not a big fan of beans in my chili. The fries were of the standard frozen variety but good. All of us felt the Wings were the best thing we tried on the menu.

Buffalo Wings

These things were hot, so much so that I was turning as red as some guy’s chest who Abdullah had just chopped.  After eating, I had to get up and walk around a bit. Those wings killed me.

I wanted to get picture of the sign outside but it was raining. I tell one of the guys , “I’m gonna take out the camera really quick and snap a pic of the sign”. When I hear, “Why you don’t you just take a picture of me?” I turn and look, my eyes are definitely not deceiving me, it’s Abdullah The Butcher! Turns out Abdullah is a pretty cool dude, but you better be nice if you don’t want to get your head bitten.
