Peoples Bar-B-Que – Miami, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsMy wife Marcela and I had heard so many good things about Peoples Bar-B-Que that we expected to be dazzled not disappointed. The building it’s house in is a bit run down and there really wasn’t any discernible sign that I could see. Once you walk in, there’s a take-away area with prepared foods, the cash register and then the counter. We went up to the counter to get a menu and took a seat. We looked around and saw that some people just ordered at the counter so I’m assuming you could do either. Marcela decides to go with some chicken & ribs, a side of mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. All meals are served with their cornbread. I order their cheeseburger and some hot wings with fries. The burger was way too salty as if it had been salted after it was cooked. It was pretty bad. The wings, which were served with the hot sauce on the side were ok and the fries were just plain oily.
The cornbread which I had heard so much about tasted very bland.
Marcela ‘s mac n cheese was good but the mashed potatoes and gravy were killer, best thing we had. The ribs were another story, I found them to be inedible. Marcela didn’t like them either.
The weirdest thing was when the plate was placed in front of her I thought the ribs with the bbq sauce all over them reminded of something but I just couldn’t pinpoint what it was. Just as I was writing this it came to me. If you ever watched the show Get A Life you’ll know what I’m talking about. Talk a look at the picture and tell me that it doesn’t remind you of when Gus (Chris’ landlord) makes ribs out of the alien Spewey. And if you haven’t watched Get A Life before, then get to it, you’re out of the loop.

Almost Famous Mel’s – Marco Island, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsAlmost Famous Mel’s was probably one of the best places I ate at last year. I didn’t really take pictures because at the time, the birth of the Burger Beast site was a few months away. I spent all of last week at Marco Island so I decided to eat here again a couple of times with my family so I could, 1) enjoy its greatness and 2) take pictures.
Who are we kidding? I just wanted to eat here again. The original review I did last year is below, as is their old menu which I guess you could compare to the new one if you really have that kind of time on your hands.
Once my wife Marcela and I arrived in Marco Island the first thing we did was head out to Mel’s. I wanted to order one of their hot dogs but since it was after 4pm (no wieners after 4) , that wasn’t going to be a possibility. We ordered the “Throw Down The Gauntlet” which I tried last year and loved (on the previous review I couldn’t remember it’s name, it wasn’t even on the menu yet).
The Gauntlet is plate of fresh cut fries with nacho cheese, jalapenos, pulled pork and chili. For some reason, the chili was served on the side this time but we dumped it on the fries as soon as the app arrived.
We ordered the wings, but now there were a variety of sauces available: Mel’s Way, Big Jon’s, Hot & Happy, Honey and Frank’s Red Hot. We were brought a sampling of all the sauces and a few pieces of cornbread with which to try them.
The Mel’s Way, Big Jon’s and Hot & Happy all tasted pretty similar but we went with Big Jon’s because it had a nice mix of BBQ and heat, the cornbread was good too. The wings were good but nothing special.
I decide to order the Michigan Burger (slab of ham and jack cheese) and Marcela goes with the Burnt Ends (burnt brisket ends and ham).
I still think the Burnt Ends is the best thing on the menu (and I still think that Mac N Cheese is pretty lame) followed by a close second of Throw Down The Gauntlet. The Michigan was really good and contained no burger at all which was weird, it was like a giant ham and cheese sandwich.
Two days later I was back with Michelle, this time before 4pm. I was able to order the Chili & Cheese Dog and the Tex Mex Burger (chipotle sauce, bacon and cheddar). While we’re discussing with the waitress my previous time there, I mention the Michigan burger. She tells me that it indeed should have had a burger in it (well that makes sense) and that the chili should have been on the Gauntlet not served on the side. She mentions this to Mel, who comes to our table to apologize for the mistake, very nice guy by the way. That Chili & Cheese Dog was so smothered in chili we had to use a fork and knife to eat it. It was great but the taste of the dog was way overpowered by the chili.
The Tex-Mex Burger was really moist and tasted way better than I remember last year. I notice the menu mentions that it’s never frozen Angus beef which I think last year’s menu did not claim.
Last but not least here’s the updated menu in case you want to check it out:

Original Post 10/13/08:
Not far from where I was staying in Marco Island is Almost Famous Mel’s South Beach Smokehouse-BBQ. Not very original as far as decor goes but when I walked in I felt like I was on vacation and as if I should be hearing Bob Marley over the airwaves, instead I had to settle for some guy trying out his favorite tunes on his guitar with cheezy keyboard accompaniment. We ordered a new appetizer created by Mel(the owner) which name escapes me at this moment (Fries with with chili, pulled pork, nacho cheese and jalapeños).
And even though by looking at it you might think it looks disgusting it tastes pretty amazing, the pulled pork was outstanding. We also ordered Bo’s Chicken Wings (Wings drenched in Frank’s Red Hot) which were just average. I ordered the Big House (Burger with bacon, mushrooms and cheddar cheese) and thought it was ok considering this was a “smokehouse” the burger did not have a strong smoky flavor. The sides I had were Mom’s Mac & Cheese (If this is mom’s mac and cheese, I’ll take an order of my dad’s mistress’ mac and cheese) and Crispy Fried Onion Strings (pretty good and a large portion). The waitress also brought a piece of their corn bread drizzled in honey butter, uh yeah, delicious. Marcela had the Burnt Ends (Crispy burnt brisket ends & ham), now these little fellas were stunning.

The Burnt Ends were probably the best item on the menu and it’s a real shame because I really thought the burger was going to be sensational.

Smokey Bones – Plantation, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsAfter my first failed attempt to eat here ended in Chili’s , it felt great to show up and be able to grab a bite. Someone I work with attempted to convince me the Smokehouse Burger at Smokey Bones was the best burger they’ve ever had, more on that later. We walk in and this place is empty, it’s also about 4 in the afternoon on a Wednesday. After looking over the menu we decide to order 1) Smoke & Fire Sampler: Hickory Smoked then grilled-seared St. Louis Ribs,
Buff-aque Wings& Mini Pulled Pork Sandwiches 2) Crowd Pleaser : Seared Spuds, Flippin’ Fingers and Smoke Rings (onion rings served with a sweet honey mustard)
and 3) Mo’ Better Bread ( corn bread w/honey pecan butter).
So let’s make this simple, since there’s a lot to review. Hickory smoked St. Louis Ribs (were fall off the bone), Mini Pulled Pork Sandwiches (moist and tasty) and the Flippin’ Fingers (again moist and tasty chicken strips) were really good. The Buff-aque Wings (a mix of buffalo and bbq sauces with average wings), Seared Spuds (thin potato skins with cheese and bacon) and Smoke Rings (the honey mustard was really good) were OK, nothing out of the ordinary here. Actually the best starter we had was the cornbread. It was served warm and with the honey pecan butter it tasted like fresh pancakes and I don’t even like pancakes, go figure. We also ordered the Pulled Pork Cuban and the Smokehouse Burger. If I ever come back to Smokey Bones I would get the Pulled Pork Cuban again.
It’s a pressed sandwich with pulled pork, swiss cheeese and mayo, not better than an actual Cuban sandwich though. The fries were good too. The Smokehouse Burger, after the hype was just a been there, done that to me.
Good Burgers with a BBQ sauce, onion straws, cheddar cheese and bacon are a dime a dozen (they’re a dime a dozen to me at least). Actually, the Gables Diner version of this same burger is way better. The mashed potatos were nothing special. My suggestion, if you come here stick to the pork products and corn bread.

Abdullah The Butcher House Of Ribs & Chinese Food – Atlanta, Georgia
Posted by: | CommentsMy interest in Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food lied solely in the fact that I watched wrestling in 1980s. Abdullah The Butcher was a character that scared me and interested me at the same time. Abdullah was known for being ultra violent in the ring and everyone of his matches ended up in a bloodbath. As a kid I thought wrestling might be a cool job but I couldn’t envision being across the ring from some guy who wanted to grab a fork and jam it into my head to make me bleed.
So when I found about Abdullah The Butcher House of Ribs & Chinese Food, I knew I had to check this place out. The walls are lined with pics from wrestlers, a whole bunch of them autographed and a few of his championship belts.

I was with a few friends of mine who decided to split a whole slab of ribs. I order a Butcher Burger as well as a Chili Dog. We order some wings also, served Hot with fries.

Full Rack of Ribs
The ribs were good and I thought the BBQ sauce was outstanding. The guys seemed to like the ribs as well as the wings/fries too. Just when I thought I was going to get my Butcher Burger, I’m told they are out of burgers. They sub my burger for 2 more Chili Dogs which my buds inherit.

Chili Dog
I really liked the chili dog even though I’m not a big fan of beans in my chili. The fries were of the standard frozen variety but good. All of us felt the Wings were the best thing we tried on the menu.

Buffalo Wings
These things were hot, so much so that I was turning as red as some guy’s chest who Abdullah had just chopped. After eating, I had to get up and walk around a bit. Those wings killed me.
I wanted to get picture of the sign outside but it was raining. I tell one of the guys , “I’m gonna take out the camera really quick and snap a pic of the sign”. When I hear, “Why you don’t you just take a picture of me?” I turn and look, my eyes are definitely not deceiving me, it’s Abdullah The Butcher! Turns out Abdullah is a pretty cool dude, but you better be nice if you don’t want to get your head bitten.

Shorty’s Bar-B-Q – Doral, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsI had seen MiamiDon‘s Seven Burgers post at the Roadfood site and it inspired me to check out a few of the places. One of those being, Shorty’s which I have not eaten at in a good 7 to 8 years. I’m not a fan of ribs but it seems that this is what you should get when you come to Shorty’s. By the time my wife Marcela and I arrive, my bud Ed is already at the table and as usual my sister Michelle is a bit late. I go appetizer crazy and convince everyone to order Cheese Fries,
Onion Rings,
Wings,
Mac n Cheese and Marcela gets a corn on the cob. By the time the appetizers are served, Michelle arrives and we pretend to not notice her going to town on the fries and onion rings. Nothing too memorable here except for the sauce at the table which tastes like the crud I clean off of my BBQ grill at home (for the record I have never tasted that crud). I take the comment about nothing too memorable back, Marcela really liked her corn. Ed orders a full slab of baby backs,
Michelle orders a combo platter with baby back ribs and spare ribs
and I get the Big Shorty’s Cheeseburger.
Ed allows me to try his ribs and they’re pretty good, Michelle allows me to try her Spare Ribs and I could definitely live without that. I am now not a fan of spare ribs, and she didn’t seem to like them too much either. Ed likes his ribs though. As for my burger, well it wasn’t bad, it was ok. I would definitely take a pass on ordering this again if I ever come back here. We also ordered a Hot Apple Cobbler which was more like a lukewarm apple pie with ice cream. Marcela and Ed love it, I don’t get it and I might be better off that way.

Brimstone – Pembroke Pines, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsOn my way to Sunrise, I’ve passed Brimstone many a time and wondered what exactly it was. It certainly looks like a chain restaurant (which it’s not) from I-75. My friend Ed and I decided to go in and see what this place is all about, prior to the visit I had looked up Brimstone online and confirmed that they indeed did have a hamburger as well as some mini burgers. I arrive first and had not realized that this is definitely much more upscale than I thought. It has an amazing wood burning smell (not the kind where a forest is burning down before someone makes a wisecrack). I’m seated far away from everyone, just kidding no one else is here. By the time Ed arrives, I had ordered a beer and a couple of appetizers.
I ordered the BBQ Chicken Flatbread (thin whole wheat crust) and the Kobe Mini Cheeseburgers.
I felt the flat bread was ok as did Ed. Now, the Kobe Mini Cheeseburgers were outstanding as were the seasoned dinner fries that came with them. Cooked to medium, these little guys were juicy, and not be anti climatic they were also the best thing we had here. I ordered the Brimstone Prime Burger (with Bacon and Cheese) and Ed had the Tenderloin Steak Sandwich (comes with mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, bacon & fried onions). The prime burger was nothing I haven’t had before, and considering it was wood grilled, it did not carry over in the taste of the burger, great fries though (deserved a second mention). I also ordered the Salt Crusted Baked Potato, which looks a lot better than it was.
Ed’s steakwich was a bigger letdown because considering the ingredients, you should have had an explosion of flavor when you bit into it, which was not the case. You are better off getting a Pan Con Bistec at Morro Castle. The best thing on his plate was the horseradish sauce served with it, which was really good for dipping the fries. And if you ever watched The State, it may have been good to dip something else in it.

Bulldog Barbecue – North Miami, Florida

If you watched season 3 of Top Chef which took place in Miami, then you know who Howie Kleinberg is . If you don’t watch then all you need to know is Bulldog Barbecue is his baby. My cousin Fred and I decide to check out the place and Howie happens to be there (we never bothered him, he seemed busy). The place seats 40 and has a very cool vibe to it. The silverware as well as some sauces and napkins are hanging tidily on the wall next to our table.

Sauces & Napkin
We are brought this little metal canister with 2 pieces of cornbread, served cold. Interesting never had it cold before, it was good but it would have been better warm.

CornBread

Wings
The wings had an indescribable flavor, in a very good way (served with a really good Buttermilk blue cheese dressing) . We agreed, probably some of the best wings we’ve ever had. As an added bonus, here is Fred showing you his technique for eating wings (You may want to turn down your speakers, it’s a little loud)

Flatbread
We went all out on this one, so this is what else we ordered:
-The Smoked Portobello “Burger” (with caramelized onions, arugula, tomato & balsamic mayo)
-The Black Angus Burger (with caramelized onions, arugula, tomato & chipotle mayo)
-Big Daddy Dog (kosher frank with cheddar, sour kraut & grain mustard)
-Mac and Cheese
I told you we were out of control. All sandwiches were served on potato rolls, with Chipotle or Sweet Fries and Slaw (I don’t like Coleslaw but Fred loved it enough to eat two portions). We both agreed that of the sandwiches or Biscuits as defined on Bulldog Barbecue’s menu we liked the Portobello Burger best. Plenty of flavor and the caramelized onions were a nice touch. I’m not a giant fan of sweet fries but Fred seemed to dig ‘em.

Portobello Burger
The Black Angus Burger was pretty good but what I really liked was the Chipotle Mayo. I think Fred said he liked it so much he wanted to smear it all over himself (a thought that hurts my brain plus we all know only men smear).

Burger
I liked the Big Daddy Dog , but I’m not a fan of sour kraut. The grain mustard was pretty amazing though. Fred liked the dog the least of all the dishes and then proceeds to admit to me later on that he isn’t a big fan of hot dogs. That’s odd because I have witnessed him down dog after dog in a hot dog eating contest. Hmmmm..

Hot Dog

Sack o' Sliders
Very close second for both of us was the Sack o’ Sliders, in order of preference:
1. Chicken
2. Brisket
3. Pulled Pork
BB
1. Pulled Pork
2. Brisket
3. Chicken
This is a definite must order item if you come here. Another definite must order is their side of Mac and Cheese. We both loved it. Just a heads up, there does a appear to be some blue cheese in it, which is probably why we liked it so much.

Mac n Cheese
At this point, we figured we might as well order a couple of desserts and finish ourselves off. Fred gets the Hot Chocolate Puddin’ Cake and I order the Apple Turnover.

Puddin Cake

Apple Turnover
Both are outstanding. The Hot Chocolate Puddin’ Cake is a molten chocolate cake with two banana slivers (good choice) on top and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Apple Turnover was delicious and flaky. When I couldn’t finish my dessert, Fred gladly helped me out. That’s what friends are for.

Bar-B-Que Beach – Miami Beach, Florida

I’m not a big fan of trekking to the beach but occasionally I will get duped into going there. This is one of those cases where I’m glad to did go where the story has a happy ending (not the massage parlor type although that might have made this a more interesting story). We arrived at Bar-B-Que Beach after 11pm and decided we should try some of their apps.

BBQ Potato Skins
We ordered: Deep-Fried Mushrooms (Battered & fried, smothered with melted Cheeses and Bacon, served with an amazing Horseradish sauce) , Chicken Fingers (Battered & moist Chicken Strips served with a Spicy Mustard sauce) , BBQ Potato Skins (this is the thing to get here, Potato Skins topped with Wood-Smoked Pulled Pork, melted Cheese, Bacon and their “Sweet Georgia Brown BBQ Sauce, my mouth is watering just thinking of this) and last but not least the Homemade Onion Rings (Giant sweet onions, sliced and battered, served with their Horseradish sauce). As if that wasn’t enough I ordered the Bacon Cheddar Burger(a half pounder topped with Cheddar Cheese and thick-sliced Apple Wood-Smoked Bacon). It’s a great burger with some great wood smoked BBQ flavor.

Burger
I’d be lying to you if I didn’t admit that I could not finish the burger after all the starters. Plus, my wife made sure to mention to me that she would let everyone know I didn’t so I figured I should beat her to the punch. Like I previously mentioned sometimes stories end happy, sometimes stories end badly, hmmm…. for example like when my friend thought it would be good to park about 3 miles from our destination….even though there was parking readily available everywhere since it was a weeknight on South Beach. And after walking from the Deuce Bar (where we were parked) all the way to the Shelbourne Hotel for some Karaoke, which as luck would have it, was not open that night. I was ready to kill. Don’t you ever wish you were a shark with laser beams? I did that night.
