You Know What’s Really Good? The Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog Food Truck

Look at this fella! I’m hungry all over again.

You know what’s really good? The Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog Food Truck.

I was standing in line waiting to order from a Food Truck (no I won’t name them) on Monday at Arts Park where I had a clear view of Dog Eat Dog. As I inched up closer to place my order all I could think about was why wasn’t I eating the Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog. It was too much for me to handle and much like a Zombie lusting Brains, I needed a D.E.D. fix.

The Dog is wrapped in Bacon and smothered in their homemade Chili and homemade Cheese Sauce. I chose to skip out on the Potato Sticks as I’m quite content with just these toppings. The Chili which had no beans (Yes!) had the right amount of beefiness and a touch of sweet. It could have probably only been better by adding a dash of Hot Sauce, not their fault but mine.

I ordered 2 and pretty much inhaled them. It was almost as if I never even had them. So I ordered a 3rd just so my wife could try it but she was too consumed with her Asquerosito Dog. Your next question must be, what is an Asquerosito Dog?

It’s a Venezuelan Street Food Style Hot Dog with Garlic Mayo, Pink Sauce, Ketchup, Mustard, Corn, Raw Onions, Potato Sticks and Parmesan Cheese. Another must try but it really is a bit of an acquired taste. In the meantime, take a good long look at the Chili Cheese Dog. It really is a thing of beauty.

BurgerFi in Aventura, Florida

As I normally do when I’m gonna check out a restaurant, I like to go in the afternoon right after the lunch rush. This particular morning my breakfast consisted of a cup of coffee and some plain white toast which meant I was ready to go once I arrived at the new BurgerFi in Aventura. And by go I mean eat not leave.

I stood and took in the menu just in case I had overlooked some new item on it online. Of course I ordered the Classic Cheeseburger which includes 2 patties, 2 slices of American Cheese, & a slathering of their Secret Sauce (which the first time I had it, I didn’t care for). I opted to go lettuce and tomato-less as usual. There are also some “Free” toppings like Grilled Onions or Jalapeño Peppers and “Premium Toppings” like a Sunny Side Up Egg will set you back a $1. Those are all fine and dandy but this burger is just so good alone that you’d be doing some major van damage by doing that. I can also confess that I’ve never ordered any of the toppings, be it Free or Premium so what the hell do I necessarily know. Well….I have had the Bacon. You gotta do what’s right for you but for me, Cheese & the Secret Sauce are it.

Classic CheeseBurger

It clearly states that Cry & Fries is for 2. If you’re a fan of both Onion Rings & Fresh Cut Fries then I say, don’t share. The Onion Rings are gigantic and seasoned and irresistible. The Fries are so awesome I almost cried when I ran out of them. Almost….

Cry & Fries

After mourning over my fries I moved onto their Wagyu Chili Dog. Yes, the regular dog is good but pay a little more a get a way better tasting dog. So ask me, I know you’re dying to. Why would I then add Chili & Cheese to this spectacular wiener? Cause I could.

Wagyu Texas Chili Cheese Dog

I did not order the Parmesan and Herb Fries with Garlic Aioli smothered on top off the Secret Menu but my friend did . He also ordered the VegeFi Burger served in Lettuce but this post is not the place for such blasphemy. The Fries looked great and there are a few other items on their “Secret Menu” you may want to know about and try. I’m not sure that it’s too secret but hey, to each their own.

Secret Menu – Urban Fries

Now that BurgerFi is finally in Miami Dade County we need to find a way to convince them to open a little bit farther South like near my house. We can’t all be like the Chowfather who lives nearby and has been there 2 more times than me already.

Knucklehead Burgers in Davie, Florida

I don’t get as many recommendations for burgers as you might think, so when a reader wrote in and mentioned he had a great burger at a new place in Davie I was off. Knucklehead Burgers are “made of a custom 100% USDA Certified Angus Beef blend of Sirloin, Brisket, and Filet Mignon”. It’s a no-brainer that I’m getting a burger but what else?

The Chili Cheese dog catches my eye but I opt for the more sensible 1/4 lb dog. Yes, that’s sensible when the other option is 1/2 lb. There’s also a difference in dogs as the 1/4 pounder is a Hebrew National while the 1/2 pound is National Deli (one of my faves). I also forgot to mention the burgers, dogs and all sandwiches are served on fresh baked buns. Some great stuff that makes a world of difference in quality. Nothing better than knowing someone is paying attention to the details. The dog was split, stuffed with Chili and topped with shredded cheddar. I did it up with some raw onions too. My only mistake was not getting mustard on it but I think I’ll live.

Instead of choosing their fries which are of the frozen variety I went with the Black & Bleu Chips. These little fellas are potato chips topped with Bleu Cheese Dressing & Crumbles plus some of their Smoked Pecan Bacon (we’ll get to that shortly) crumbles. These are highly addictive and after we asked for a side of Hot Sauce (they use Rickey’s) to dip them in, they were the perfect side dish. Well perfect except that I started sweating lightly on my brow.

Black & Bleu Chips

My k.i.s.s. Burger had unwelcome visitors, mushrooms. I ordered my burger with only American Cheese and some of their Smoked Pecan Bacon. While we were seated waiting for the grub I noticed the receipt said I had ordered a Swishroom Burger (w/Swiss Cheese & Mushrooms). By the time I mentioned it to them, the mushrooms had made it onto the burger but at least I got my American cheese. I like mushrooms just not really on my burgers, they tend to add a little too much moisture. I mean I was OK with it and didn’t go back and create a scandal as some folks love to do. Knuckleheads make mistakes and I’m sure they would have been more than happy to correct it if I had brought it up to them.

The only other thing the burger had going against it was that the patty was smaller than the bun, which is a mini pet peeve of mine. The burger was great (cooked a beautiful Medium without asking), the bun was great but that Smoked Pecan Bacon is still the thing that stood out the most. You hear from everyone, “Applewood” this and that but this is probably the smokiest of Bacons I’ve ever had. Plus, take a look at it below, it’s beautiful in a Bacon kinda way.

As our eating escapade was winding down, wings were being offered around. I tried their “Hot” and liked it. I’m not so sure that they were good enough to crave but if you looking for wings and are in the area, they’ll do you better than Hooters.

I’ll be back as I’d like to try their “Rise & Shiner” with an Egg, Cheddar Cheese and some of that ridiculous Smoked Pecan Bacon. I’d have to be a Knucklehead not to.

Doggi Style…From Cart to Restaurant

In early April Doggi Style the Hot Dog cart serving up Venezuelan style Hot Dogs, Burgers and Chicken Sandwiches announced it would be closing up shop at its current location and that they would be back soon. And yes, they’re back but gone is the cart. They’ve set up shop right off of Coral Way and SW 67th Avenue. Laura who owns Doggi Style has also expanded the menu to include Chili Dogs, Chicago Dogs and a few other ditties. But you’ll have to see for yourself when you visit. For now:

Jake’s Wayback Burgers in Coconut Creek, Florida

Jake’s Wayback Burgers from Delaware is the latest chain of burger joints to make its way to South Florida and first open up in the Coral Springs area (after Elevation Burger & Smashburger). The area appears to be a hotbed of burger import activity. Jake’s has been around for a little over 20 years and has locations in about 10 other states.

After scanning the menu I settle on the Jake Cheeseburger (Double Patty) and a Chili Cheese Dog. The all beef Hot Dog is served up almost fully sliced in half on a toasted bun with a halved American Cheese slice, Chili and raw Onions (my addition). The Chili Cheese combo brought out a bit of sweetness which I should have taken advantage of with some dabs of hot sauce, but didn’t. The Hot Dog isn’t going to disappoint anyone but it’s also not going to get its own fanpage on Facebook.

Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries in Boca Raton, Florida

The first time I set eyes on Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries was back in the mid 80′s when they could be found in the Food Court area of a local mall. All I can remember was that fresh cut Fries were the only thing available and I’d load up on ketchup to dip them. I hadn’t thought of them in years until I read about their new concept which brought burgers in the mix.

Boardwalk Fresh Burgers & Fries is mostly compared to Five Guys since their burger is similar in look and taste to them. The menu on the other hand is much larger and includes a Veggie Burger and a few Chicken options. It’s not the best Chili Cheese Dog I’ve had but it gets the job done,

It was pretty ridiculous the amount of fries that come with the “Large” order. And Yes, the fries tasted just as good as I remember them but Large is definitely a sharing size.

In Naples, Pastrami Dan’s is the Man

When I asked Scott the owner of the Nosh Truck what he thought about Pastrami Dan’s his eyes lit up, that told me everything. It was nearing 2 in the afternoon and he mentioned that they might not be open. It didn’t stop me from driving over there to find out for myself. Pastrami Dan’s is open from 11 to 4 Monday through Saturday just to be clear. I made it there with a little over an hour to spare.

My wife is not a Pastrami or Roast Beef fan so lucky for me there’s a “Super Taco” that she can eat. It’s got a nice cheese crisp built around the boarder. The taco’s got ground beef with salsa and plenty of lettuce. This is definitely her thing and she loved it.
