BurgerQue in Ft. Myers, Florida

BurgerQue is not a fast food joint. Most folks will take one look at it and assume that which is bad for 2 reasons. First, the food is not fast food as there is much depth of flavor and secondly you’re not gonna get your order in 120 seconds. It’s gonna take a little longer than to get something this good.

Flip Burger Bar in North Miami, Florida

Last time I was at Flip Burger Bar there were different owners. Since then a couple of brothers who were fans of the joint decided to buy it up once it was put up for sale. They’ve changed a few things on the menu but the food is still great and in the case of the mac n’ cheese, better than I remembered it.

I started with the hot wings. You can of course go the mild or medium route but I opted for hot on this particular occasion. Their homemade hot sauce, made with 3 different peppers can be brutal to non chili heads but if you’re looking for some heat and flavor this is definitely it. Took a good look at the wing in the picture and you can see the pieces of the diced peppers.

Harrison’s Sports Grill – West Miami, Florida

I drive down 57th Avenue between Coral Way and 8th Street a few times a week. Harrison’s replaced a restaurant that had seen better days and that has looked worn out for years now. Harrison’s color scheme is the same as the Hurricanes which means we know who their target audience is. It’s not too far from the UM campus which makes sense. The starters include Jalapeño Poppers, South West Eggrolls, Mozz Sticks and Loaded Nachos but on both trips there I had the wings.

The Wings are flash fried and then grilled, very reminiscent of Sports Grill (who are hailed as Best Wings by about 90% of Miami). The first time, I tried Dante’s Inferno which were really not that hot. The wings themselves are a near masterpiece of flavor. A few days later when I returned, we ordered the BBQ wings which drowned out the great taste of the wing itself with a really delicious BBQ sauce. Both are winners in my book.

Harrison’s Hot Dog appears to be about a 1/4 all beef dog, served on a toasted & lightly buttered dog bun. Options? You can go either Chili, Cheese, Kraut or Chili Cheese. I tried the Chili Cheese Dog and I didn’t dig the Chili at all. On the 2nd go around, I had the Cheese Dog which was great. It’s sliced in half and slightly crispy from the grill. The Cheese is the nacho cheese canned type of sauce.

Before we get to the Burger you should know that there’s a Philly Cheese Steak & Chicken Philly on the menu that I didn’t get to try, that’s for you Cheesesteak-o-holics. As per the menu, the Harrison’s 1/2 lb. Burger is half a pound & seemed quite larger to me. I had the Burger with Swiss Cheese but if you so desire you can add Mushrooms, Jalapeños, Bacon or even an extra patty.

Harrison’s Cheese Burger

The Burgers are served with Potato Chips, Fries will run you about 3 bucks more. The Fries are of the crinkle cut frozen variety and not worth the $2.95. When I had the Burger with American Cheese and Bacon I liked it a whole bunch more. It’s a good burger and much better than the one served at Duffy’s right down the street. I liked Harrison’s and I’ll be back to try out their Philly(s) very soon.

Woody’s Famous Steak Sandwich In North Miami, Florida

Woody's Sign

Woody’s Famous Steak Sandwich has been around since 1954. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that it means I’m expecting good things. We walk in on a Saturday night and there’s no one in the place. While my wife Marcela is trying to decide what to order, I make some small talk with the guy at the register (I’m gonna say he’s either the manager or owner). I tell him that someone had highly recommended Woody’s Famous Steak Sandwich (True) and I ask if they have a website (The answer is no and I already knew the answer to that). Why did I ask something I already knew? I was trying to get him to open up to me and talk about Woody’s. He tells me I can find out about Woody’s on Yelp (already done my research) and how great their Steak Sandwiches are. He is very friendly as was the dude who cooks our food.

Marcela finally settles on the Philly Steak with Onion and Cheese and a side of Curly fries (my least favorite of the Fry family although Tater Tots are catching up). I order the Deluxe Woody Cheeseburger Ground Sirloin and a Chili Cheese Dog. There’s a little condiment area for your Hot Dogs and/or I guess also for your Steak Sandwiches and Hamburgers.

We attempted to get a picture of it but no one matter what we did it came out blurry. It had Onions, Jalapeños, you know the usual suspects. The guy who’s cooking is right on the other side of this condiment area making our grub on the flat top. Everything is cooked to order. We receive our food and take a seat. Marcela takes one bite of the Philly and I know that face. It means “Let me try your food” .

Woody Burger w/Fries

Woody Burger w/Fries

She tries my Woody Burger which she instantly falls for. Before I give up all custody rights to my Woody Burger I had 2 bites. The Woody Burger tasted alright but it was nothing out of this world, maybe a little bit above average at best.

Philly Steak Sandwich

Philly Steak Sandwich

I found the Philly Steak Sandwich to be good but also not worth the hype surrounding it. The weird thing is, it almost seemed as if it was pressed like a Cuban Sandwich. Check out Andiamo’s Philly Dogma’s Philly,  it blows it out of the water. The hot dog was Sabrett which I love with Cheese Sauce and Chili. The Chili was a little better than what you might find at most joints. Did I mention I severely dislike Curly Fries ? I think I might have. Overall, this just seems like a good lunch place with some pretty good prices.

Lil’ Ole Caboose In Deerfield Beach, Florida

It didn’t take much to convince my friend Ed to eat at Lil’ Ole Caboose. He’s from New York and the thought of a good Slider cemented the deal. I’ve driven past here a few times and wanted to stop just because it stands out like a sore thumb amongst the surroundings. It is after all a red train caboose in the middle of nowhere. The one thing that caught our eye as we were walking towards Lil’ Ole Caboose was the “If You Like White Castle You’ll Love Boxcar Burgers”(including the use of the White Castle font). My thoughts on that later. I like the look of the place inside but it could do with some cleaning.

There is a mini train track running all the top the area we were sitting in but again, it was caked in dust. There’s also a sign about Boxcar Burgers claiming “Take Home & Simply Microwave!”

Ed and I looked at each other (not in a loving way) and thought “Oh no”.  Also, for those of you searching for that elusive Birch Beer (and Diet) they have it on tap here.

Ed ordered 3 Boxcar Cheeseburgers and 1 Chicago dog.

I ordered 1 Double Boxcar Cheeseburger and a Chili Cheese Dog.

We also ordered some Chili Cheese Fries. We both go for the Hot Dog and we both thought the exact same thing (whoa! we are one) . There’s no way this is a Sabrett Hot Dog but that’s surely Hormel chili. The Chili Cheese Fries were also a disappointment. The Fries taste as if they have been fried a second time to warm them. They were bad, Ed only ate one fry. It’s a shame because they were the Nathan’s style thick cut Fries.

“If You Like White Castle You’ll Love Boxcar Burgers”, now that would be untrue. The sign about “Take Home & Simply Microwave!” said it all. There is no doubt in our minds that these Boxcar Burgers were microwaved. The bread was soggy just like the microwaved White Castle Slyders get. They were very bland and this caboose should never have left the station (I know, that was a bad one).

Jack’s Old Fashion Hamburger House In Oakland Park, Florida

Jack’s Old Fashion Hamburger House has been around since 1972 and is known for its Burgers that are “Cut and Ground Fresh Twice Daily” on the premises. Jack’s is a South Florida Landmark and one that must be experienced. There’s 3 different sizes available to order a Jack Jr. ( 1/4 lb.) , Original (1/3 lb.) and a Big Jack (1/2 lb.). While I don’t eat Lettuce, Tomato and Onions on my burgers I like how when you order them, they’re given to you in a little clear resealable sandwich bag.

Law of the Land at Jack's

The Burger had a beautiful crust on the outside which I love in conjunction with the ultra processed Cheese they use. I really didn’t find the burger to be all that flavorful and it might have to do something with the fact that they use lean meat, not really a favorite of mine. But…..if you add Yellow Mustard it brings out the beef taste of the patty.

Check out that Burger Crust!

The fries were the standard stuff that taste great with some salt and drowned in ketchup.

Jack’s Chili Dog suffers from “OK” Hot Dog and good Chili syndrome. If you’re fine with that then this is the wiener for you.

A few years ago Jack’s Old Fashion Hamburger House was named one of “The Nation’s 15 Best Burgers”. Jack’s is an institution for some folks and a great part of South Florida Burger history so a visit here is a requirement for you Burger fans out there.
