Pao Town in Coral Gables, Florida

What’s in a name? Pao Town, what exactly does that mean? I was sure Pao wasn’t named after the girl who worked with me a few years back or the term (pao pao) my grandmother used to threaten me with when she was trying to prevent from doing something bad when I was a child. So I had to look it up which means I won’t tell you what it is but at least I made it easier for you by linking the definition. On to the food….

Pao Town is located in the ever growing Coral Gables food scene and can be probably best described as Momofuku-esque. The menu is not very big with 6 mains, a couple of salads, a few “Buns” which include a Pork Bun, 2 hot dogs and some sliders & 5 sides. There was also a special on the board but I don’t recall what it was but be on the lookout for it if you’re a “Specials” kinda person.

I ended up visiting twice within a few days of each other. That first night I chose to go with the Bacon Fried Rice, Sliders w/Togarashi Fries and Sticky Ribs. The second time I went for lunch and had Bacon Fried Rice, Sliders w/Fries and Pao Wings. Now looking back, I’m not sure why I didn’t have the Pork Buns but there’s always next time.

The Bacon Fried Rice was just as you imagined it being. It’s a pretty standard Fried Rice affair with Bacon & Pineapple jonesing for your attention. It’s very important that you get a bit of the Pineapple and/or Bacon in each bite or it won’t be very memorable. There’s some Sriracha at the table and a dash of that doesn’t hurt either.

The Sliders were one of the 2 most memorable things I had at Pao Town. These little fellas are about 4 bite of sheer pleasure. They’re served on Hawaiian Sweet Rolls and topped with Caramelized Onions and Wasabi Ranch. There is no Cheese on these and no need it for it. The Onions and Ranch create this creaminess which is made that much better by the Medium-Rare/Medium cooked patties. The rolls are also lightly buttered on top. Nice touch.

The regular Fries can be upgraded to Togarashi Fries (tossed in Japanese Seven-Spice) with a Wasabi Ketchup. I suggest you do as I tried both and found the spiced up Fries to be more fulfilling than the plain janes.

The Sticky Ribs which are Pork Riblets (tossed in a Black Vinegar & Soy Reduction) were not really my cup of tea. These guys were really dependent on the sauce which was good but maybe a little too much when you’ve got to eat this large of a quantity. But I’m sure the Captain Tso’s Chicken crowd will eat this up.

Sticky Ribs

Did I leave the best for last? It was a definitely a close one between the Pao Wings and the Sliders. On the first visit I took some Wings to go for my wife. I tried one and it packed such a wallop of  flavors that I knew I needed a full order for myself. These dudes were no joke. They’re dusted with Cumin & Black Pepper and were just about as crispy as you can get Chicken. There’s a sauce served with it but I preferred it “virgin”. A must order item.

Pao Wings

My wife also had the Kalbi Short Ribs and she thought they were great. I’ve now got the Pork Buns, Brussel Sprouts and Egg Roll in my sites for next visit. Let me know how you enjoy the Sliders & Wings.

Shula’s 347 Grill in Coral Gables, Florida

I’ve been wanting to eat at Shula’s Steakhouse for years so it was pretty cool when I received an email inviting me to try out the burgers at Shula’s 347 Grill. Why 347? Don Shula had 347 wins as the Dolphins head coach. So I started with the Crispy Ravioli.

Crispy Ravioli

I had never had fried Ravioli before but I thought it was a great twist on regular raviolis. The ravioli is breaded and deep fried, then served with a side of the red sauce for dipping. This was right up my alley. The sliders I tried next were seared filet medallions topped with caramelized onions, mustard aioli on a small roll with au jus for drowning I mean dipping.

Sliders

Now these guys made my day. I’ve never been an au jus kinda guy and why dip them when they taste so good all alone. Before I get to the main event I wanted to tell you about the new love of my life at Shula’s 347 Grill, better known as smashed potatoes.

Smashed Potatoes

Their take on mashed potatoes with skins left on and grated cheese on it was a touchdown (I would have said homerun but since we’re at Shula’s). I was prepared to haul home a bucket of it.

Cheese Burger

I was lucky enough to sample three of their burgers. The Cheese Burger (with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato , diced onions with a side of their seasoned mustard mayo spread), The Pesto Burger (pesto mayo on the top/bottom bun, gruyere cheese, bruschetta tomato mix and shredded parmesan) and The French Onion (with chefs dressing, gruyere cheese, caramelized onions and crushed croutons). I added Applewood Bacon to the Cheese Burger.

Pesto Burger

The 8oz tri-blend (I wasn’t told which were the 3) patty on a challah bun is the constant between all 3 burgers. All 3 burgers will appeal to 3 different types of folks. The Pesto Burger is not my cup of tea and I do eat bruchetta every once in a while but the pesto mayo was great. I liked it more than I thought I would but the regular Cheese Burger is more my speed. It’s a good choice if you don’t want to go out on a limb and try some craziness. My favorite hands down was the French Onion. It was the right kind of sloppy and such great taste plus the gruyere and caramelized onions. It also had a crunch from the crushed croutons which at first caught me off guard.

The Pesto Burger was a daily special so it might not always be available. The seasoned mustard mayo spread served with the Cheese Burger was so good I slathered it all over my food. I didn’t get to try the Black and Blue Burger which is a menu fixture but it sounded pretty good. I still regret not getting the deep fried Buffalo Chicken sandwich daily special but I had burger business to take care of. You can’t win ‘em all but I got pretty close.

The Bar – Coral Gables, Florida

A couple of folks had been asking me to check out the Patty Melt at The Bar. After my bud ghenghisjuan’s visit there last year I was a little dubious. I like the atmosphere a whole lot so I took a seat at the bar. After downing my refillable cola I decide I’m gonna take everything to go, mostly because my wife is starving and I don’t she’d go for the whole I eat, she waits routine. The patty melt was the one thing I was definitely getting and the cheeseburger rolls and what the hell, let’s throw in some chicken nachos.

The nachos were topped with cheese, chicken chunks and jalapeno spirals (some pico and sour cream were packed up independently). They’re good and probably even great if you’re drinking but nothing revolutionary here. The Cheeseburger Bar Rolls were probably my favorite and I wish I had requested no pickles which I am not a big fan of.

Cheese Burger Bar Rolls
The insides…

The bar rolls are egg rolls stuffed with cheeseburger ingredients like beef, cheese, onions, tomatoes & pickles. The side of thousand island served with it did nothing for me. I can best describe them as a hot pocket with better ingredients. The presentation when you eat them there is a little better, not those logs you see in the picture. And that leaves the patty melt…

Can you even mess up a patty melt? Patty Melts aren’t considered burgers by some folks but I don’t fall into that category.  As long as you get the right bread (rye), make sure it’s nice and toasty, maybe slightly buttery, tasty grilled onions that mix with the melted cheese on top of the patty you’re golden. So how was it? I don’t think I’ve had one with Swiss cheese before but I prefer it with American cheese. The answer is it was good, just what you would expect. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Sir Pizza – Coral Gables, Florida

By just walking into Sir Pizza, the smells brought back great memories of my childhood. Their tagline, “Good to the Very Edge” refers to the pizza being cut into squares, while it still being a round pie. I know people who swear by this place and after looking at the menu….I thought “What to start with….how about the Sausage Garlic Bread?”

Sausage Garlic Bread

Great garlic bread topped with sausage crumbles and cheese, it was just plain addicting. I wish I had smuggled some out in my pant pockets for later. There’s a burger and a cheesesteak on the menu so ordering these were no brainers.

Cheesesteak with onions & peppers

Sir Pizza 1/3 pound cheeseburger

The cheesesteak was good (I should have asked for no peppers, not a fan of them) but the burger was better. The burger was nice & juicy and on a fresh baked roll, it hit the spot. I’d definitely comeback for one of these. And now that I think of it, the sausage crumbles on the burger might not be a bad idea. Getting to the pizza, like I said earlier, it was very reminiscent of what I loved about pizza as a kid,

the thinner crust and the crispy mozzarella cheese on top. The pepperoni here is diced into little cubes which makes it pack more of a pepperoni flavor punch. The crazy thing is there’s also a Chocolate Pizza with semi-sweet chocolate chips. And you know what? It’s really tasty and a must try. Now getting back to that sausage topped burger…….

Fatburger In Coral Gables, Florida

I frequent Fatburger a whole bunch. Through trial and error I’ve figured out what the best things to have here are. There are 5 burgers sizes available from S (Baby Fat, 2.5 oz.) , M (Fatburger, 5.3 oz.), L (Kingburger, 8 oz.), XXL (Double King, 16 oz.) and XXXL (Triple King, 24 oz.). From L to XXL to XXXL it’s not a larger patty (each patty is 8 oz.)but double and then triple burgers. Stick with either the M or L and you’ll be fine.

L Burger with Cheese, Mayo & Mustard

Mmmm…

There are toppings like Bacon, Chili or a Fried Egg that can be added but I would just steer clear of them. Cheese is the only way to go and as far as condiments, Mustard and Mayonnaise (UPDATE: I’m all about the Mustard Only now). The meat is seasoned with a heavy hand on the pepper which I happen to like.

Homemade Onion Rings

If the Burgers aren’t enough you can get a meal with Onion Rings, Fat Fries (thicker Dinner Fries) or Skinny Fries (Shoestring Fast Food Type Fries).

Chili Cheese Fat Fries

Or you can be like me and order Chili Cheese Fat Fries. From time to time I might order a Chili Cheese Dog,

Chili Dog

Turkey Burger or even the Spicy Chicken Sandwich but I always end up going back to the L Burger. The Shakes are great too but usually by the time I’m done eating I’m all out of room.

Swensen’s Ice Cream Parlor And Restaurant In Coral Gables, Florida

Swensons Sign

Swensen’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant has been around forever. I remember my parents bringing me here as a kid for Ice Cream after dinner. Now, I’ve never really been a big Ice Cream fan but every once in a while I’ll have the urge to eat some. My wife Marcela on the other hand is an “Ice Cream Deviant”. No ice cream is safe in our house. My pal Jarce and I originally wanted to eat at the new Five Guys location that had just opened but when we drove by it was ridiculously packed. We were less than one block away from Swensen’s. It had been a while since I had eaten at Swensen’s. As a matter of fact, Marcela and my obsession for Frank’s Red Hot Sauce can be attributed to Swensen’s. It was here that we fell in love with the Hot Sauce they were using. The waitress told us it was Frank’s Red Hot. We had never heard of it but now we can’t live without it (that’s a bit of a stretch) . Alright, getting back to the story at hand, Swensen’s now has some new Burgers on the menu. Jarce orders the BBQ Burger (he’s a big time BBQ sauce ho) and I decide to try the Horseradish Burger. We also order their Appetizer Platter. One thing I’ve never understood about some restaurants and their “Appetizer Platters” is the weird quantities of food.

The Apps

The Apps

This platter had 4 Chicken Wings, 3 Mozzarella Sticks, 2 Chicken Tenders and 5 Onion Rings. I felt as if we were playing Fantasy Baseball, we’re trading items with each other. “Ok, I’ll eat the Onion Rings and you’ll have more Chicken Wings.” Everything on the platter was pretty standard stuff with the exception of the Wings. The Wings were nice and crispy and of course they were served with Frank’s Red Hot. Jarce loved his BBQ Burger. It had a couple of Onion Rings, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese and was topped with BBQ Sauce.

He was so in love with the BBQ Sauce that at one point he was using it as lip gloss (I was kidding, just in case someone believes that).

Horseradish Burger

Horseradish Burger

The Horseradish Burger had Monterey Jack Cheese & Scallions. Their homemade Horseradish Sauce was a pleasant surprise. I’ve had Burgers here before and they didn’t taste like that. The Burger was better than an Ice Cream Parlor has any business serving. We didn’t make it to Dessert but then again, Marcela wasn’t with us this time.
