Cinebistro – at Dolphin Mall near Doral, Florida

There’s probably nothing worse than waiting through your entire work week to finally see the “big movie” and having to deal with knuckleheads who think they’re at a pool party. There’s a couple of ways to solve this. If you’re going to be checking out some indie fare then I’d suggest visiting O Cinema to get your culture fix. If big Hollywood releases are your thing then Cinebistro should be on your radar.

Yes, there is a premium price to be paid here but you must be 21 to watch a movie, and the seats are probably larger and more comfortable than what you’ve already got at your house. And this is where the bistro part of their name comes into play, they have a full restaurant menu. You could of course come in, watch and leave but you wouldn’t get the full experience.

You should probably check out the Cinebistro Menu online.

To dine at the theater you must arrive 30 minutes prior to the showing. It’s pretty unbelievable how quickly the food gets to you, right as the lights begin to dim. The food can be anything from serviceable to excellent and over the last few months there are some particulars that I hope you take away from this post.

Beers, Specialty Drinks, Coffee (Mmm..Cortadito), Wine and Soft Drinks are on the drink menu. If you do choose a Soft Drink, make sure you ask for a refill which they will bring with your food. If not, you’ll need to step out of the theater mid film for it.

The menu changes and I’ve seen some dishes come and go. The Chorizo Sandwich had all the right components to be great but it just didn’t deliver. It’s good to see they’re paying attention to what works and removed it.

The House Ground Bistro Burger has a special blend of beef cuts (Shortrib, Brisket and Chuck). It served with Cheddar and a Special Sauce, aren’t all the good ones served that way? It’s way better then this theater has any business serving. Those of you who frequent the “Chains”, should come here instead. It’s 100 times better. You heard that Mom & Pop? lol

I prefer the Wagyu Sliders to the full sized Burger. That Spicy Red Onion Jam on the Sliders has it going on.

On the starters front I’ve tried a bunch of them. The Croquetas are your standard meat sticks fried perfectly. No complaints here but they’re not house made. I do like the Stone Ground Mustard served with them though.

The regular Fries are just run of the mill shoestrings but if you do need a potato fix then the Sweet Potato Fries are a better option. You can also ask them to give you a half Reg/half Sweet Fry order instead.

If you’re not very hungry but looking to just snack on something I’d suggest probably the CinéBistro Steak House Chips (Fresh cut Potato Chips topped with Short Rib, Gorgonzola Cheese, Bacon, Caramelized Onion, and a Malt Vinegar Steak Sauce), Popcorn Chicken (also available in Shrimp Or Calamari which are mixed with real Popcorn) or just Popcorn which is served in a ceramic odd shaped bowl. Free refills on the good ole but you would need to make the dreaded trip out of your safe haven.

There are some desserts on the menu but I didn’t indulge. My wife and her friend did order the “Chocolate S’mores At The Movies” one time. The menu describes it as “chocolate lava cake, homemade marshmallow, popcorn sabayon, graham popcorn streusel“.

They seemed to have really enjoyed it. I was too busy trying to figure out what to do with all the plates & cups I had collected and how to prevent them from falling of off my little swivel tray.

Hamburgers El Corral To Open in Doral in January

In early June I mentioned that Hamburgers El Corral from Colombia would be opening up in South Florida. Now we have a location and opening date. The 1st Hamburgers El Corral in the U.S. will be located in Doral right off of the Palmetto Expressway and NW 25th Street. The tentative opening date is Wednesday January 2nd, 2013 (It’s Open) so put that one on your calendar so you don’t forget. I’ve got a strong suspicion that place is going to be a madhouse when it opens.

P.S.: From what I’ve heard, the 2nd location will be in Coconut Grove.

Check out how my visit to El Corral in Doral went: HERE

Miyako Japanese Restaurant In Doral, Florida

Miyako Sign

As I’m clicking my heels (I don’t wear high heels before some of you jump to conclusions) I’m saying to myself “There’s no place like a Burger Joint.” Since I can’t live by Burger alone (I guess I could but…) , I will occasionally attempt to eat at establishments that don’t have a Burger in sight. Miyako is a Sushi place which is problem number one since I don’t eat Sushi. So how did I end up here?

My parents brought me some Fried Rice (Fried rice in a Japanese place? I thought it was exclusive to Chinese places) a few weeks ago and I was left speechless by how good it was. Whenever I order Fried Rice, I always go the Vegetable Fried Rice route. This Fried Rice had no Meat and/or Seafood in sight. It really was the Best Fried Rice I’ve ever had.

My parents decide they’re heading out to Miyako and I tag along to see what else I may be able to consume. They both get Miso Soup, I’m not a fan of it since it reminds me of Karate Kid II.

While they’re downing their soup, our Shrimp Tempura appetizer shows up. Besides the 2 long breaded Shrimp there are some Vegetables as well as Sweet Potato type Fries. Not too shabby.

I order the Chicke Katsu. Chicken Katsu is boneless, breaded and then fried Chicken. So I played it safe but there was nothing I was willing to go out on a limb and try, so sorry. I also ask for a Spicy Mustard and before you know it, I’m crying.

My mother orders the Salmon Crunch! She apparently really loves this thing because before I could even get a picture about half of it is gone. My father orders the Volcano Roll, I guess the deal with this is that it’s spicy.

The one last item I ordered was the Fried Rice, that’s a double order in the picture.

I still can’t get over how good that rice is. Our waitress ends up being pretty funny, and she’s not Japanese but Chinese. The person serving us our drinks was Cuban and the manager I believe is Nicaraguan. So, not all things are as they appear except for the Fried Rice.

Shorty’s Bar-B-Q In Doral, Florida

I had seen MiamiDon‘s Seven Burgers post at the Roadfood site and it inspired me to check out a few of the places. One of those being, Shorty’s which I have not eaten at in a good 7 to 8 years. I’m not a big fan of ribs but it seems that this is what you should get when you come to Shorty’s. By the time my wife Marcela and I arrive, my bud Ed is already at the table and as usual my sister Michelle is a bit late. I go appetizer crazy and convince everyone to order Cheese Fries, Onion Rings, Wings, Mac n Cheese and Marcela gets a corn on the cob.

Onion Rings

Wings

By the time the appetizers are served Michelle had arrived. We pretend to not notice her going to town on the fries and onion rings. Nothing too memorable here. I take the comment about nothing too memorable back, Marcela really liked her corn.

Ed orders a full slab of baby backs, Michelle orders a combo platter with baby back ribs and spare ribs and I get the Big Shorty’s Cheeseburger.

Ed allows me to try his ribs and they’re pretty good. Michelle allows me to try her Spare Ribs and I could definitely live without that. I am now not a fan of spare ribs. She didn’t seem to like them too much either. As for my burger, well it wasn’t bad, it was ok. I would definitely take a pass on ordering this again if I ever come back here.

We also ordered a Hot Apple Cobbler which was more like a lukewarm apple pie with ice cream. Marcela and Ed love it. I don’t get it and I might be better off that way.

Flanigan’s In Doral, Florida

Over the course of the last 20 years I have eaten at Flanigan’s quite a few times. It has never really been a favorite of mine but whenever I’ve wanted to get a cold beer (one of the few places I could get Red Elephant beer back in the day) and some appetizers this is always one of the first places to come up with my friends. My buddy Ed swears by this place and one time my cousin and I ordered so many appetizers that they didn’t even fit on the table (the ends of the plates were overlapping each other). My wife and I recently went to Flanigan’s to have some appetizers and I had, you guessed it, a Burger.

R Rib Rolls

For appetizers we had Joe’s Rockin’ Rib Rolls and an order of Chicken Crispers in Hot Sauce. Joe’s Rockin’ Rib Rolls are Deep Fried Egg Rolls filled with Rib Meat from their Baby Back Ribs, Pulled Pork, Cheddar Cheese and their Barbecue Sauce. These little guys are good (not great) . If all of the appetizers on the menu were Ed’s children, this is the kid who could do no wrong. He loves them, I like them, and I guess you can be the deciding vote if you try them. The Chicken Crispers are probably my favorite of Ed’s children.

Crispers

The Crispers are moist Chicken Strips which might not be for everyone. Ed prefers the Strips to be dry like his personality (t-minus getting a reply for that one). I prefer the Hot or Barbecue version, but if you’re a wimp they’re available in Mild or Medium Heat. Other appetizers to consider are their Potato Skins which are actually semi hollowed out Potato Halves (large ones not the T.G.I. Fridays size) with Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Bits (I like ‘um) and the Loaded Nachos. My wife and Ed think these are the greatest nachos and I just don’t get it.

Caribbean Burger

I’ve had all of the Burgers here at one time or another but I decided to go with the Caribbean Burger on this trip. It’s an ok burger but nothing really out of this world. I do realize I will get some heat for that comment because there are a few people who seem to really love this place and in particular this Burger. Unfortunately, I do not agree with that sentiment. I’ll just stick to my ice cold Beer and appetizers, thank you very much.

ChickfilA In Doral, Florida

Right where a Krispy Kreme previously stood is now a Chick-fil-A. The only 2 things I knew about Chick-fil-A was 1. McDonald’s Southern Style Chicken Sandwich is a copycat of their famed Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich and 2. S. Truett Cathy, the owner of Chick-fil-A is a devout Baptist who doe not let any of the stores open on Sunday.

He also owns Dwarf House (which has a “dwarf-sized” door for children and some adults to enter through). There is a regular door in case you were wondering. It’s fast food and sit down service like their Truett’s Grill (both the Dwarf House and Truett’s Grill also serve burgers) . Plus he also opened up Upscale Pizza which serves pizza, hot dogs and sandwiches, all located near Atlanta, Georgia but let’s get back to this visit to Chick-fil-A.

Waffle Fries

My wife decides to order Chicken Nuggets which I know does not bode well for me or my meal. She should be eating the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich I ordered for myself with her eyes in the next few minutes. I also got some Chick-fil-A Chicken Strips and Waffle Fries to share. The variety of sauces here is awesome and plus I had never seen packets of Texas Pete hot sauce before.

Mini versions of Tabasco Sauce & Texas Pete's Hot Sauce

Everything was really good and fried to perfection. The chicken is pressure cooked in peanut oil and it makes a difference in the flavor. I suggest you order their Lemonade which was just right for this food. And one last thing, you’ll never see friendlier service in a fast food place, at least I never have. P.S. : My wife ended up eating my sandwich.

Hooters In Doral, Florida

I’ve been going to Hooters back before anyone even cared about it. We’d walk in and the place was empty. Back then no family in their right mind would go there to have dinner but things have changed. The last few times I’ve been at Hooters I’ve even seen a grandmother celebrating a birthday there.

Hot Wings

Hooter’s is predominantly an appetizer place for my friends and I. We order the usual suspects like Wings, Buffalo Shrimp, Deep Fried Pickles, Curly Fries w/Cheese and wash it down with a pitcher of beer. Is this food gonna win any culinary awards no but it does its job. We’re here to shoot the shit and have some apps and there’s nothing wrong with that.
