BurgerFi in Lauderdale By The Sea, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsBurgerFi has been open for a little while now but I put off checking it out since all I would really hear about it are the Shake Shack comparisons. There is no doubt that this is indeed a Shack Shack clone down to having Concretes (Frozen Custard). They do however have more options when it comes to dressing your burger but how does the food stack up to the Shack?

Blue Willy’s Traditional Southern BBQ – Ft. Lauderdale Street Food
Posted by: | Comments
As I got off of my car I could smell the glorious smell of the smoker a good 100 feet from me. Blue Willy’s BBQ is a large trailer, part of which is the smoker brightening up my day. I was with my cousin and after taking a good long look at the menu we order everything.

OK, maybe not everything but almost everything except the Brisket and Rib Tips. We also decide it would be best to order everything as a “Plate” so that we can try all the sides. There were five sides: Willy’s Pit Smoked Beans, Coleslaw, Fries, Cornbread and Mac n’ Cheese. The fries were nothing special. The Mac n’ Cheese had a nice little bread crumb crust top but I didn’t feel it was cheesy enough. I didn’t try the coleslaw and beans, my cousin loved them. The Cornbread is a must have with the little pieces of corn sprinkled throughout.

So I won’t have to repeat myself throughout, there was an omnipresent smoke flavor in everything. The homemade smoked sausage was served up first in slivers. The sausage was great and could have easily been a part of a great sandwich with onions. Blue Willy suggested we try mixing both his tomato and mustard BBQ sauces with the Chopped Pork sandwich. I loaded up my sandwich with the mustard sauce and tried adding a bit of the tomato one. I could see some folks preferring the mix but I loved the mustard sauce solo.

The St. Louis Spareribs were my cousin’s favorite but for me, nothing was better than the chicken. It was delicious, it was moist (smokey too!) and it had a White BBQ sauce. I was not familiar with the existence of a White BBQ sauce but it’s an Alabama thing according to Willy. I went back and tried everything again with the white sauce which just confirmed my suspicions. That White BBQ sauce needs to have a permanent home on the condiment shelf in my fridge.

Texas Hold’Em BBQ – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsRight after leaving the Ft. Lauderdale Court House I spotted a bright red building and was able to smell a nice meaty aroma from the street. As I started to drive closer I noticed that it was a BBQ joint and the meaty aroma was coming from a giant smoker outside. I decided to go in and was amazed how busy the place was. I noticed a pulled pork sandwich with a side lunch combo and decided to pull the trigger on my order. The sandwich came with their sweet hickory sauce on the side which was a plus in my book since I don’t like food to be too saucy (unlike my women).

The pulled pork was probably the freshest I’ve ever had and the sweet hickory sauce was amazing. I ended up asking for more at the counter and going to town on the sandwich. The sauce made the sandwich ten folds better if you can believe that. The mac and cheese was interesting because they used conch shaped pasta and the cheese sauce wasn’t really a sauce. They made it with a more pizza style cheese, kinda thick and chewy. Overall a great experience and I look forward to the next time to try some of the other BBQ items they have to offer.

Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill – Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsGilbert’s has some of the nicest folks you’ll ever meet greeting you as soon as you walk in, it makes you feel like you’re home. There’s a old diner feel to the place and I like it. The menu has a variety of dishes but I’m obviously here to try their burger. Which burger to have? It made sense to have the standard 8oz. Certified Angus Beef Burger. I figured cheese and bacon were a necessary evil, so Cheddar Cheese and Bacon it is.

The burger was good, it was a solid burger. This is the point where I would say, but it’s not gonna win any awards but I’d be wrong since they were recently crowned Best Burger by Sun Sentinel’s Online Reader’s Poll. It was thick, and if there’s one thing I took away from eating the burger was how juicy it was. Also, I really dug the bacon. And the fries? Dude. I loved them. Gilbert’s need to make a cheese fries appetizer with some of that amazing bacon on it. I’ll be back. There’s a few food concoctions on the menu I’d like to try like the Goat Cheese Burger with caramelized onions or the Bacon Cheese Fries, wait….that’s not on the menu. Well, at least not yet.

Nacho Bizness – South Florida Street Food – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsThere’s a whole bunch of flavor coming out of the small Nacho Bizness trailer. Nacho Bizness starts early enough that it serves breakfast and lunch. There is a regular menu and some specials every day.

On the day before I checked them out, there was a burger on the menu which I unfortunately missed. Today was Taco Tuesday, so with your order of Tacos you got a free Soda & cookies or chips.

| Rodeo Burrito up close |
I had a Yum Yum (Spicy Korean Pulled Pork) Taco and a Marley (Jamaican Jerk Chicken) Taco along with a Rodeo Burrito (grilled BBQ steak). The Rodeo Burrito had Chipotle BBQ sauce, black bean and corn salsa, guac, cilantro, chipotle sour cream, sweet chili oil, black beans, rice and mexican cheese. The one thing that made this burrito for me was the meat. It was soft and flavorful.

And while I liked the Marley Taco, I thought the Yum Yum is the way to go. It is definitely a bit spicy but not overpowering. It is a little odd to eat this “authentic style” mexican taco with sour cream on it but it worked well. Who am I to complain? Now if I could only go back in time to try the burger.

15th Street Fisheries & Dockside Cafe – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsHow I ended up here isn’t particularly important. What is important, is that I did. 15th Street Fisheries & Dockside Cafe are actually 2 places housed in one location. I walked into the Dockside Cafe portion (the downstairs), decided it was too hot to sit outside and took a seat not too far from the bar. I ordered some of their Jumbo Buffalo Chicken Wings to start with. The wings were fried and tossed in the sauce of your liking. I chose hot. The wings were great. The 8 ounce Burger is a mix of ground chuck and brisket. There are 4 cheeses to choose from (American, Cheddar, Swiss & Blue) and don’t think for one second that the idea of having all 4 didn’t cross my mind. Mushrooms, caramelized onions and bacon could also be added so I of course chose bacon.

| delicious burger with bacon tail |
As good as steak fries sounded, I decided some Yuca fries were in order. The Yuca fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, good stuff. The mojo mayo dipping sauce was killer. The burger was just plain awesome. It was cooked to medium and the bacon was crispy deliciousness. I was surprised to find such a good burger in a place known for its seafood but I’ll take it. And that’s what makes this burger find so good.
