Las Olas Street Festival Favorites

Burger Belle and friends headed to the Las Olas Wine and Food Street Festivalwho boasted that more than 70 wine, beer and food vendors would be out on the Boulevard.  We started the evening at Privé, the VIP reception at Historic Stranahan House on the breezy New River. We received our wine glasses and blingy lanyards, then set out for the four hour tasty extravaganza. We strategically started on one side and worked our way down and around.

About Burger Belle: Let me tell you about my style. I am on the quest for Burger (and other comfort food) Nirvana. I spend a few weeks researching and getting to know about the establishment I plan to review. I make several visits, some known and some not. I do make an effort to meet the owners to understand their vision, so I can write a comprehensive review about my experience. I do not rate, instead I offer up an inside look into what makes the best comfort food in South Florida. At times, I may be comped all or part of a meal, but this does not in any way influence the outcome of my review. Got it? Good, now we can get back to having fun and spreading the good word about all the Burger Nirvanas yet to be discovered! Stay on the path, pilgrims, and remember, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey!

Brewja Bites: Cigar City Tap Takeover

Brewja Bites Logo

So about a week ago, I decided to take a bite out of Tap42 and see what the hype was all about. A Quinoa “Superfood” Salad and a flight of some of Florida’s finest local brews later, all I can say is, “Believe the hype!”

Tap42 is known for their impressive selection of draft and bottled craft beers, creative beer cocktails (if you have to ask what this is, get thee to Tap42 without a doubt) and the food, which is “Aces” in my book too. Now, I can’t speak to their burger (feeling the shame as Burger Beast reads this) but I trust the words of those who have had and it undoubtedly fits the bill. Speaking from experience and a gander at what the entire menu entails, it is vegetarian friendly too!

Now, let’s get back to the beer!!!

While I was there, I had the pleasure of chatting it up with Lauren, Tap42’s creative maven who is a craft beer enthusiast much like me. She and I decided that I had to bring the Brewjas to Broward and give our sisters (and brothers) to the north some love. When she mentioned the Cigar City Brewing Tap Takeover in the works, we knew it would be a perfect fit to launch our first event of 2013 and reconvene after some time off.

Brewjas and Brew Daddies all over South Florida, hear us loud and clear, YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS! Here are the deets:

Cigar City will be on tap in full force offering the  Jai Alai IPA White Oak, Dos Años Kumquat Berliner Weisse, Patio Tools Irish Stout , and Cubano Espresso (and no, this isn’t your Abuela’s cafecito). They will have also have the original Jai Alai IPA and Maduro Oatmeal Brown (absolute staples from the CCB portfolio). Bottles of Bolita Double Nut Brown and the CCB & B.Nektar collab “Camp Braggot Ghost Stories” will be available too! Drafts will be tapped at 7pm and if a full pint isn’t your thing, Tap42 will have their hand-crafted flight of three, six ounce pours of anything on draft.

So if you have never joined us for one of our gatherings or if you are a veteran, a man, a woman and anything in between (over the age of 21) come on out and hang with the Craft Brewjas on Thursday, March 14th. Everyone is welcome!

Tap 42 Burger Close Up

Tap42 is a Gatropub located in Ft. Lauderdale. If you’re a beer fan, you will love all the Craft Beers available on Draft (51 to be exact) and in Bottle form. You can even check out the Bottle & Draft line ups online. I was here for lunch which was unfortunate since the Dinner Menu had some items that have had my eye virtually: Bite Sized Meatballs, Warm Pretzels, Chicken Wings, Rock Shrimp Mac & Cheese, Black Jack Porter House Meatloaf, & Chef’s Choice Grilled Hawg Wings.

My wife had their Butternut Bisque Soup and the Turkey Melt. She enjoyed both and I didn’t even get to steal a bite as I was too busy in Social Media land “lol” ing and “Liking” things. That Spiced Cream on the Soup looks real good.

No shocking news here but  I ordered the “Prohibition” Burger (Cheddar Cheese, Bacon & Special Sauce) and I discarded the Lettuce, Tomato, & Onion. This dude also comes with Fries and a side of Ketchup. Once the offenders were removed I was able to enjoy the Burger. Tap 42 has their own meat blend which was seasoned perfectly. But even more than that, the grind was great. It was on the verge of being crumbly which I happen to love.

I really couldn’t make out what was in the “Special Sauce”. At first glance it seemed like a Thousand Island dressing kinda deal but I could swear I tasted some mustard in there. It would have made for a better dipping sauce for the Fries than the ‘ol standby, ketchup.

I’ve gotta come back and try out that Black Jack Porter House Meatloaf for dinner. It sounds interesting and right up my alley.

You know what’s really good? The Short Rib Grilled Cheese & Poutine at Rok:Brgr

You know what’s really good? The Short Rib Grilled Cheese & Poutine at Rok:Brgr – Miami

If you’re a first timer at Rok:Brgr it makes sense for you to try one of the burgers, that’s a no brainer. Now, if you’ve been there a couple of times and want to break out from your normal routine, then you should add the Short Rib Grilled Cheese & Poutine to your must try/eat list.

The Short Rib Grilled Cheese features Short Rib with Caramelized Onions, Fontina Cheese on a Toasted & Buttered Bread. There’s only one way to amp this dish up:

Make sure to “Add Bacon” to it:

Bacon!

As for the Poutine, I’m not too sure as to its authenticity (never been to Canada) but it does taste damn good. The Fries, which are hand cut are topped with Cheese Curds, smothered in Gravy and served in a mini cast iron skillet (be careful, it was very hot). You may not want to share.

But you probably should, if you wanna try out something new.

Brooklyn Italian Ice Co. in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Flavors Board

I had just finished up my late breakfast at the O-B House in Ft. Lauderdale when I remembered that I wanted to check out the Brooklyn Italian Ice Co. on Las Olas. If you’re not familiar with well here’s a description:

Italian ice, also known as water ice, is a sweetened frozen dessert made with fruit (often from concentrates, juices or purées) or other natural or artificial food flavorings, similar to sorbet. Italian ice is not shaved ice that is flavored; rather, it is made by the same process by which ice cream is made: freezing the ingredients while mixing them. Italian ice differs from sherbet in that it does not contain dairy or egg ingredients.

Now that we got that out of the way. They had 16 flavors available and have 25 flavors total that are rotated daily. Brooklyn Italian Ice Co. has 4 sizes you can choose from starting at 3 ounces and working your way up to largest at 16. There’s also a “Swirl of the Day” where you guessed it, they swirl 2 flavors. Exhibit A: Banana & Strawberry

Italian Ice Banana-Strawberry Swirl

Italian Ice has a very smooth ice cream like texture with some surprisingly accurate flavors. The Bananas tastes like Bananas, the Strawberries taste like Strawberries and the Schnozberries taste like Schnozberries. Just kidding, there are no Schnozberries that I know of.

Peach Italian Ice

I also tried the Peach which brought back childhood memories of when I used to go through those giant cans of Libby’s Libby’s Libby’s Peach Juices like it was nobody’s business. You’re also able to sample just a small spoonful of the flavors. I tried a few others and thought the Chocolate and Coffee were spot on. If you’re on Las Olas I suggest you check them out and do the Swirl of the Day, everyone’s doing it. Ok, well not everyone but it’s a great option.

Full Disclosure: I know the owner of Brooklyn Italian Ice Co. and I did not pay for any of the Italian Ice that I tried.
