Shula Burger in Ft. Lauderdale Opens Wednesday October 17th

Approximately a year and a half ago I mentioned that Don Shula was getting into the Burger Game. In the time since then they’ve opened Shula Burgers in Islamorada and at the Tampa International Airport. This Wednesday October 17th you can find finally find one in your neck of the woods as the Ft. Lauderdale Shula Burger is opening its doors to the public. If this is still too far for you South Floridians, there’s hope, as the Kendall and Delray Beach locations are also slated to open by the end of the year.

Burger Freak in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Physical Menu at Burger Freak

What are you, some kinda Burger Freak?

We’ve all been there, someone calls you a Burger Freak and you think about it and agree. Hey, it doesn’t hurt to be honest with yourself. Burger Freak in Ft. Lauderdale fills the void for your kind ,um err our kind. The menu has some interesting concoctions on it, check them out below:

Burger Freak has a sideshow theme which I happen to really dig. The walls are covered with old Sideshow/Carny Posters. I almost felt right at home.

There are plenty of options but I wanted to keep it simple for my first order. There’s a hot dog called the Beast but it’s half a pound and if I’m planning on having a burger too it would be a bad idea. I end up with the Grilled Devil Dog (half a Beast) and throw in a cup of their “Hamburger Chili”. On the burger side, I create my own: 6 oz. Angus Patty, Brioche Bakery Kaiser with Bacon and Cheddar Cheese (American was not available).

The “Hamburger Chili” is Hormel’s Chili and if I’m wrong (which is doubtful in this case) then it must be closest replica to it I’ve ever tasted. If you like Hormel canned Chili then this is for you, for me it was not. There went my original plan to dip the dog in the chili! I liked the toasted fluffy bread my Dog was served in. The jumbo half Hot Dog was split in half and crisped up. Some raw Onions and Yellow Mustard rounded out my toppings for the Grilled Devil Dog.

The fries are “Natural Cut Fries” which means they’re not fresh cut but are as close as you can get by using the frozen stuff. And the burger? The Burger is a top notch fast style burger. I just wish they had American Cheese as I think it’s a better option for this type of burger.

I’d like to go back and try out one of their specialty burgers, maybe The Sword Swallower (Burger topped with Sliced Italian Sausage) or The Two Headed Man (Burger topped with Hot Dog). Meat on Meat action, isn’t that what it’s all about my fellow Burger Freaks?

Blue Willy’s Traditional Southern BBQ – Ft. Lauderdale Street Food

As I got off of my car I could smell the glorious smell of the smoker a good 100 feet from me. Blue Willy’s BBQ is a large trailer, part of which is the smoker brightening up my day. I was with my cousin and after taking a good long look at the menu we order everything.

OK, maybe not everything but almost everything except the Brisket and Rib Tips. We also decide it would be best to order everything as a “Plate” so that we can try all the sides. There were five sides: Willy’s Pit Smoked Beans, Coleslaw, Fries, Cornbread and Mac n’ Cheese. The fries were nothing special. The Mac n’ Cheese had a nice little bread crumb crust top but I didn’t feel it was cheesy enough. I didn’t try the coleslaw and beans, my cousin loved them. The Cornbread is a must have with the little pieces of corn sprinkled throughout.

So I won’t have to repeat myself throughout, there was an omnipresent smoke flavor in everything. The homemade smoked sausage was served up first in slivers. The sausage was great and could have easily been a part of a great sandwich with onions. Blue Willy suggested we try mixing both his tomato and mustard BBQ sauces with the Chopped Pork sandwich. I loaded up my sandwich with the mustard sauce and tried adding a bit of the tomato one. I could see some folks preferring the mix but I loved the mustard sauce solo.

The St. Louis Spareribs were my cousin’s favorite but for me, nothing was better than the chicken. It was delicious, it was moist (smokey too!) and it had a White BBQ sauce. I was not familiar with the existence of a White BBQ sauce but it’s an Alabama thing according to Willy. I went back and tried everything again with the white sauce which just confirmed my suspicions. That White BBQ sauce needs to have a permanent home on the condiment shelf in my fridge.

Texas Hold’Em BBQ – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Right after leaving the Ft. Lauderdale Court House I spotted a bright red building and was able to smell a nice meaty aroma from the street. As I started to drive closer I noticed that it was a BBQ joint and the meaty aroma was coming from a giant smoker outside. I decided to go in and was amazed how busy the place was. I noticed a pulled pork sandwich with a side lunch combo and decided to pull the trigger on my order. The sandwich came with their sweet hickory sauce on the side which was a plus in my book since I don’t like food to be too saucy (unlike my women).

After: Pulled Pork Sandwich w/ Sweet Hickory Sauce

The pulled pork was probably the freshest I’ve ever had and the sweet hickory sauce was amazing. I ended up asking for more at the counter and going to town on the sandwich. The sauce made the sandwich ten folds better if you can believe that. The mac and cheese was interesting because they used conch shaped pasta and the cheese sauce wasn’t really a sauce. They made it with a more pizza style cheese, kinda thick and chewy. Overall a great experience and I look forward to the next time to try some of the other BBQ items they have to offer.

Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Gilbert’s has some of the nicest folks you’ll ever meet greeting you as soon as you walk in. It makes you feel like you’re home. There’s a old diner feel to the place and I like it. The menu has a variety of dishes but I’m obviously here to try their burger. Which burger to have?  It made sense to have the standard 8oz. Certified Angus Beef Burger. I figured Cheese and Bacon were a necessary evil, so Cheddar Cheese and Bacon it is.

8oz. Angus Burger with Cheddar & Bacon w/Fries

Gratuitous Bacon Closeup

It was recently crowned Best Burger by Sun Sentinel’s Online Reader’s Poll. The Burger was good, it was a solid Burger. It was thick and if there’s one thing I took away from eating the burger was how juicy it was. The best way to describe the fllvor is to say it’s a very beefy tasting burger, almost steak-like.  Also, I really dug the bacon. And the fries? Dude. I loved them. Gilbert’s need to make a Cheese Fries appetizer with some of that amazing Bacon on it. I’ll be back. There’s a few food concoctions on the menu I’d like to try like the Goat Cheese Burger with Caramelized Onions or the Bacon Cheese Fries, wait….that’s not on the menu. Well, at least not yet.

Addendum:

After multiple visits it is imperative that I let you know that you MUST have the Havarti Burger ( 8 oz. Burger topped with Bacon & Havarti Cheese between two toasted English Muffins with Garlic Butter). That is all!
