I ate at OTC earlier this year and was blown away by it. I decided against writing about it because the pictures I snapped were a little too grainy and I didn’t think they did the food any justice. It took me a little bit to return but I’m back. I chose to skip the Mexican Coke this time around and had a Brooklyn Lager on tap instead.

Much like myself, OTC is about the comfort food. The Menu isn’t very large and is divided into several categories like Mac n’ Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Sandwiches and my favorite Salads. Everything is meant for sharing and is served on cutting boards and mini cast iron skillets. You must resist the urge to pick one up to move it or face the consequences. I almost did when I was shuffling around the dishes on my table.

The Chicken Fingers are breaded in Panko Breadcrumbs and fried crispy. They were excellent with the house made ketchup which had a very earthy taste, not my usual cup of tea but I loved it. The La Frieda Beef Slider is topped with a Quail Egg, Bacon and their Cheese sauce. In case you’re not familiar with what La Frieda is a reference to, you may want to read up on them if you’re a fan of beef. The simple answer is they’re a very well known meat wholesaler from New York/New Jersey area who create custom blends of beef for many high profile customers (including Shake Shack). They are just starting to break into the South Florida market and OTC is one of the few places you can find them. Now that you know that, it shouldn’t surprise you how phenomenal the Beef Slider is. They came in a set of 3. Two of the sliders had baby gherkins speared through the top while the other had a breaded & deep fried Bacon garnishing it.

Now onto my favorites dishes at OTC, the Braised Short Rib and the Chicken Parmesan Grilled Cheese. If you’re going to only order two dishes then I’d suggest these guys. This giant hunk of tender Short Rib could be one of the eight wonders of the world. One bite and you’ll rethink sharing it with anyone else, at least I did. On my first visit to OTC I ate the Chicken Parmesan Grilled Cheese and liked it so much that I ordered a second one a few bites into it. Nothing has changed, I love this guy. The Tomato Confit with the fresh Mozz on this sandwich has me mesmerized. If this Grilled Cheese was a dictator and asked me to help it take over the world, I would. On the healthier tip I also enjoyed the Roasted Mushrooms. They make a great side dish for the Braised Short Rib.

Hey, what do you know, they have plates here. I’m not sure that this jar can contain the amazingness of this Key Lime Pie. It’s just the right amount of tart.

It’s important to check out them out via Facebook to keep tabs on what specials they have going on. And Fatgirl Hedonist says the brunch is a must but I’ll let her tell you about that:

The Daily Melt in Midtown

The Daily Melt

The Daily Melt just opened up it’s second spot in Midtown right next to the Five Guys. Their first restaurant is in Coral Springs where I originally planned to hit them up til I found out about this fella. I had taken a look at the menu online so I knew which 2 I wanted to eat. I added a Cup of Broccoli & Cheese Soup. The Soups are available in either Cup or Shot, which is great for those just wanting a little something extra. The Broccoli & Cheese Soup was a run of the mill soup that can be found at a Subway or Quiznos type establishment.

Both of my Grilled Cheeses (Bacon Melt & Coney Island Melt) were on Sourdough Bread but I could have gone the Wheat route. It wouldn’t seem right to have a Grilled Cheese on Wheat Bread anyway. The Bacon Melt had Cheddar, Crispy Bacon, Spinach, Roma Tomato with a side of ruffled pickles. The Coney Island Melt was a Hot Dog Grilled Cheese with American Cheese, Chili, Onions and Yellow Mustard (and those pickles on the side too). Neither of these two did it for me. The Daily Melt is claiming to be “The Ultimate Grilled Cheese”  but these are the type of sandwiches that I could recreate at my home with better ingredients and results.

My friend who was with me ate the Meatball & BBQ Pulled Pork Melts. His words after the first bite of the BBQ Pulled Pork Melt was that this was “Mall Food”. Ironically enough, the first Daily Melt location is in Coral Springs Mall so that makes sense. If you do check it out, please let me know your thoughts below in the comments area.

ACME Bakery & Coffee in Midtown Miami, Florida

I tried really hard to stay up and be one of the first folks to walk into ACME Bakery & Coffee this morning at 7AM when they opened. I had one of those late nights which meant my visit was pushed to about 11:00AM. Since I couldn’t find a menu online anywhere I stood there really trying to figure out what would be the best thing for me to have this close to lunchtime since I hadn’t eaten breakfast.

My eyes were drawn to Lil Stephie’s Biscuits & Gravy (w/Lake Meadow Farm Egg) and the ACME Cinnamon Toast. So I take my seat and then realize I didn’t order anything to drink so I ask for the Latte made with Panther Coffee (Coffee Joint in Wynwood). I’m sitting there pretending to be doing something on my phone when the Frittata with Ham and Swiss Cheese catches my eye too. Hey, tack on one of those bad boys.

The Biscuits & Gravy first make their way to my table quickly followed by the Latte. After the prerequisite pictures were snapped I dig in. The biscuit was flaky and had the consistency of a great pastelito. The biscuits were covered as if a sausage gravy volcano had exploded all over it. The perfectly cooked sunny side up egg was peaking its yolk out and was also consumed by the tasty lava. Those little clumps of sausage goodness were great and right on.

I was so focused on my Biscuit that I neglected the Cinnamon Toast and didn’t really dig into it till I was almost done with the first dish. I’m two bites in when the Frittata makes it appearance. The Cinnamon Toast is great but Egg, Cheese and Ham is a much more important part of my diet. Yes, the Frittata was very good and as I look at my watch I see that it’s now 11:16AM. In 14 minutes they start serving lunch. Do I finish this Cinnamon Toast and call it a day or stick it out and order lunch?

Virginia Ham & Swiss Cheese Frittata

A tough decision made very easy when Chef Danny Serfer (Blue Collar) walks though the door and offers to polish off my Cinnamon Toast, freeing me up for some lunch. The Hot Melty, their take on a grilled cheese and the Meatloaf Sandwich is now up in the batter’s box. The Hot Melty was done right but I really should have added the Neuske’s Bacon or Fried Egg on top to take it over the edge.

The Hot Melty

I was reaching maximum capacity when I first took a bite out of the Meatloaf Sandwich. The onion marmalade added the flavor profile of a slider to it. It was like an old horror movie, Burger meats Meatloaf on some Toasty Bread. It could have also been a romantic comedy since I was definitely in love. Maybe a little mayo on the bottom bread may have made it perfecto for me.

Meatloaf Sandwich

You’d think I would have been done but I needed to take some stuff home too. I have yet to be able to try the Cookies, Scones, Breads and a couple of Biscuits I also bought. I’m still too full 5 hours later but maybe when I’m back to hungry mode I’ll give you an update on those. Or maybe I’ll make it in at 7AM tomorrow and load up again. Only this time there will be Bacon, oh yes.

Prime 112 – South Beach, Florida

My buddy (an actual friend not the 1980′s toy) called me up and tells me that I must eat at Prime One Twelve. What do I know about Prime One Twelve? It seems as if every celebrity that visits Miami ends up there. In other words, it’s a place that does not normally interest me. After looking over the menu I have a change of heart, comfort food heaven. The prices of course are higher than my usual hot spots. I figured let’s do this, if it’s worth it I’m always willing to pay.

We head out for lunch and decide to make the hard decisions, we order (our table is pictured above): Tomato Basil Soup w/ Mini Fontina Grilled Cheese, Five Cheese Truffle ‘MAC’, KOBE Beef Hot Dog, 1 lb. KOBE Cheeseburger, Sea Salt Baked Potato w/ Vermont Butter, Applewood Smoked Bacon Bits and Chive Sour Cream , Potato Pancakes and Crispy White Truffle French Fries.

Now you must be thinking, there’s no way they ate all that food and you would be correct. Everything was delicious, except for the potato pancakes which I found to be way too crispy and not potato-ey enough. And one last thing, it would be great if they removed the name KOBE from the burger and dog because we all know it’s not authentic KOBE from Japan. For your drooling pleasure, please check out all the pics below especially the one with the bacon chunks on top of the baked potato.

Ms. Cheezious Brings Sexy To The Miami Food Truck Scene

Ms. Cheezious

Ms. Cheezious is definitely the sexiest truck to show up on the Miami Food Truck scene.  I’ve tried everything on the menu and I can tell you that you can’t go wrong with anything you order. I’m partial to the Grilled Blue & Bacon but the new Jamon Serrano, Manchego with Tomato Spread recently stole my heart. There’s also a Turkey Chili Cheese Fries which are a must have. Make sure to ask if they have any  ”Specials” cause they’re always awesome. The menu is below, followed by some pictures and don’t forget “Ms. Cheezious brings the party to your mouth!”

8 oz. Burger Bar In Miami Beach, Florida

I had wanted to eat at 8oz. Burger Bar last week but I was still recovering from my trip to Atlanta. Now semi-recovered, my wife was not able to accompany me so my sister Michelle went instead. With no wifey around, I was now free to order away. For starters we ordered their Kobe Beef Corn Dogs and Buffalo Drumettes. Great batter on the corn dogs and the purple mustard, which tasted great were a nice combo. We liked the Buffalo Drumettes but found the blue cheese sauce served on the side to be odd tasting, not bad just odd.

Michelle orders herself a Thai Gimlet whatever the hell that is and she likes it. As Michelle places her order, our server Christy proceeds to let her know that the Turkey Burger has Turkey. An amazing revelation ladies and gentleman. Just kidding. She did actually say that but as she caught her mistake, it was too late. Actually Christy was a blast, a bad dancer but a blast.

Getting back to the task at hand, food. Michelle has her Turkey Burger with Cave Aged Gruyere Cheese & Bacon. I order my 8oz. Beef Burger the exact same way. The beef well…. “Meat is ground in-house then aged in a Himalayan salt-tiled meat locker before being grilled on live oak”.

We also try the Short Rib Grilled Cheese (Onion Marmalade, Bel Paese Cheese). Bel Paese where have you been all my life? As well as sides of Kennebec Fries, Stout Battered Onion Rings & Truffled Potato Skins.

Gruyere Cheese & Bacon Burger w/Kennebec Fries in the Background

Michelle said that this was the best Turkey Burger she’s ever had. She was particularly in love with the escarole on it. I really liked the Horseradish Dijonaise served with her burger. My burger tasted great and the Gruyere Cheese was definitely the right choice.

Truffle Potato Skins

The Short Rib Grilled Cheese and Truffled Potato Skins were so good we took an order to go for our dad to try. The Kennebec Fries were delicious and the Stout Battered Onion Rings although good were probably my least favorite item. What did I wash all this down with? A Kahlua shake, good stuff.

I did learn a few things on this outing. 1) I definitely ordered way too many things 2) The amount of combinations that can be made between Condiments, Cheeses, Sauces and Extras may keep me coming back here for quite a while. And 3) Always remember, the Turkey Burger has turkey.
