Start The Week Off Right At Cuban Guys In Hialeah

Cuban Guys Specials

Cuban Guys wants to make the beginning of your work week tolerable. They’re expanding their popular $2 Frita Tuesdays to now include $3 Pan con Bistec Mondays and a $4 Steak Bowl on Wednesdays. I’ve been pretty good about hitting up Cuban Guys on Wednesdays for a Pan con Bistec to help me get over the mid week hump. Is a day change in the cards for me? The Specials are only available on those days from 4PM til close.

Cuban Guys in Hialeah brings on the Frita

Storefront

I’ve been keeping tabs on Cuban Guys for what seems like almost a year now. I loved the concept, a fast food Cuban restaurant that doesn’t cut corners on quality. It seemed like they might never open but just last week when I took a gander at their Facebook page I saw that the opening was less than a week away. So I wrote them through Twitter for specifics and was invited for their friends and family soft opening to try the food. In case I forget to mention it, they will be open for business as of Wednesday January 11th aka today.

I’m standing there checking out the menu and trying to figure out what to get, who am I kidding? I’m getting a Frita. My wife Marcela is with me and she opts for the Frita Bowl. I choose Yuca Fries for the side while she went the Plantain Chip route. There are 2 different Flans on the menu (Regular or Coffee), we also ordered these. Next to the register is an iced up cooler filled with water, Materva & Jupiña, 2 Cuban soda staples. Noticeably absent from the ice bath was Iron Beer which happens to have the coolest logo of the 3.

Cans in Rest Mode

Marcela’s bowl had all the important components of a Cuban meal. Let’s see there was Black Beans & Rice, nicely diced up Platanos Maduros (fried sweet Plantains), real Julianne Potatoes (not the Potato Stix canned version), diced white onions and a Frita patty. You can of course choose Chicken, Steak or Pork but when in Rome….

If you’re hungry and/or probably starving this is the route you wanna go. The bowl was delicious and filling. The plantain chips had a great crunch and were salted just as I like ‘em (most importantly not of the frozen variety). They were served with a dipping sauce that I overlooked since they were so perfect as is.

Plantain Chips

The menu includes all the Cuban classics like Sandwich Cubano (Cuban Sandwich), Media Noche (Midnight Sandwich, same ingredients as Cuban Sandwich on a sweet roll) and Pan con Bistec (Steak Sandwich) and at the top of the list, the Frita (Cuban Hamburger).

There are 2 things I look at before eating a Frita. First is that they are making their tiny shoestring (Julienne) fries and second that it’s served on a Cuban roll. From there I move onto an examination of what’s under the top bun. Are they trying to pass off  some ground beef or an over seasoned regular burger patty as a Frita? It’s also pretty nice if they toast the roll. Lastly a taste test of the goods. Make no bones about it, Cuban Guys’ Frita is the real deal, it’s legit. I asked about going “a Caballo” (with a Fried Egg) and the owner said it’s possible but not on the actual menu.

All Wrapped Up & Somewhere To Go

Cuban Guys Frita

These Yuca Fries were crispy and the dipping sauce (some Mayo/Ketchup mix) was actually perfect for it. I was hesitant to to try it since I prefer Yuca Fries sans anything else but glad I did. If I hadn’t ordered a Flan, I might have gone for a Pan con Tortilla (Omelette Sandwich) also. The cool thing is they serve breakfast all day. As someone who has eggs for dinner occasionally, I’m loving that.

Yuca Fries w/Pink Dipping Sauce

Flan is the classic Cuban dessert. Everyone has a mom, grandmother or aunt that makes the best Flan in Miami and/or Earth. If for some reason they’re not in Flan making mode, you have 2 options at Cuban guys. The regular Flan is good but the Coffee Flan is ridiculous and the one to get.

Coffee Flan

I’m looking forward to working my way through the Cuban Guys’ sandwich (the Pan con Bistec is unbelievable) menu. Now if they only had croquetas….. (Update: Croquetas were added to the menu)

Morro Castle – Hialeah, Florida

To clear up any confusion for those of you that are Frita-informed, the Morro Castle in Little Havana and this Morro Castle in Hialeah have nothing to do with one another. This Morro Castle is important to me because it’s where I tried my first Frita as a kid. My father brought me here to have a “Cuban Hamburger”. In other words, he was using terminology that was sure to trick me into having one. It worked and even though a Frita seemed so foreign to me back then I find it odd when I encounter someone who has never tried one. Morro Castle is cash only but there is an ATM machine. There are tables but I sat at the counter just like I did many years go.

Croqueta Preparada

Croqueta Preparada Halfsies

I ordered a Frita and a Croqueta Preparada.  The Croqueta Preparada was served on Cuban Bread and it was nicely toasted on a press. It’s topped with the same Julienne Potatoes and Onion slivers their Frita has. It seemed to be missing something, possibly Cheese to level it up to being awesome.

Open Face Frita

Morro Castle’s Frita

The Frita , well I closed my eyes and I remembered my dad looking down intently at me as I was about to try it. He was so happy that I liked it. And looking back, it’s where I started my life-long obsession with Fritas. When I opened my eyes the Frita was gone. It was great so I took a few to go. I called my pops up on my way out and he mentioned to me that I had my first Frita there. Who could forget something like that?

Dog House Fast Food In Hialeah, Florida

Dog House Outside

Dog House Fast Food is a Colombian fast food joint located in Hialeah. For those of you looking for some late night eats, they’re open late on the weekends (til 6am on Friday and Saturday). It was midnight by the time we walked in and were checking out the menu. Someone had just walked out so we were alone with the man behind the counter.  The Hawaiian Dog & Hamburger is what we were leaning towards. So we order and…..they’re out of Hamburgers. So we decide on the Hawaiian Dog and the Chicken Burger. The man disappears (not literally)but to the back. I’m looking around at the decor and I notice something strange.

The Burger pictures on the menu and on the front on the counter seem familiar. Yup, it’s just as I thought. A Double Whopper. A Double Whopper? What the hell? The dude comes back with our Hot Dog and Chicken Candwich (let’s not lie to ourselves here, this isn’t a Chicken Burger). It’s processed Chicken in patty form.

The toppings for the Chicken Burger are Cheese, their House Sauce and we add Bacon (hey, what the hell). All things considered, it tasted OK for what it was. The Hawaiian Dog with its Pineapple Sauce, House Sauces and fresh Julienne Potatoes had a great taste.

The Dog itself was a little on the small side but at least it was Beef (and not some Chicken/Pork mix). While I wouldn’t tell you to go out of your way to come here and eat, it makes for a great midnight snack if you’re in the area.

Koky’s Barbecue Steak Ranch In Hialeah, Florida

I can’t believe this place has been around since 1976. As a kid I used to eat dinner at Koky’s Barbecue Steak Ranch with my family once or twice a month. Not much has changed at this place. It’s still a bit of a dive but maybe that’s why it’s still around.

Inside of Koky’s

Or, it could be because the prices are relatively low in comparison to other food places, which would explain a thing or two. My wife Marcela decides to go with an order of Baby Back Ribs. I order the Jumbo Double Cheese Burger with Fries and we also order some Wings and a couple of Corn on the Cobs. The Jumbo Double Cheese Burger is in fact not jumbo, it got lost in the bun. As far as flavor is concerned, it reminds of a Burger King patty.

Double Cheeseburger

The Wings were slightly undercooked. The oddest thing was they were not Grilled or Fried. Leaving only the dreaded Oven Baked or Microwaved options, which is what I’m leaning towards.

Wings

The Corn, well it was corn and it was really bland even after we added Butter and Salt. Marcela’s Baby Back Ribs were a travesty.

Baby Back Ribs

There is no way they were made today. The Ribs were so dry they must have been reheated. That’s the feeling I get about Koky’s, nothing appears to be fresh. The only thing I thought was good was their Fries, but man can not survive on Fries alone.
