Mauro’s Pizza by the Slice in Hollywood, Florida

The Chowfather being the Pizza aficionado that he is has mentioned Mauro’s to me on more than one occasion. Now, every Monday night at Arts Park in Hollywood there’s a Food Truck Event I curate. I’ve driven past Mauro’s on my way there for the last year & a half and not even realized it. My brother in law was driving two weeks so I was taking in the food sights on the way there. “MAURO’S!!!” I couldn’t believe I had been so close to it all this time. It was not in the cards that week to hit them up but last week……oh yes.

fast payday loans Payday Loans for every one

Mauro’s is Cash only but there’s an ATM so they can still extract some extra moolah from you. It seems from what I read everywhere that service is borderline rude. I didn’t encounter that but I was there at 3:30PM on a Monday, there was no one ahead of us when we walked in and ordered.

I go straight Cheese Slice, my wife Marcela decides on Pepperoni and I also order a Ground Beef for good measure. A Slice will set you back $2.75 and an extra buck for every additional topping.

The full toppings line up: Pepperoni, Mushrooms, Sausage, Peppers, Anchovies, Black Olives, Onions, Pineapple, Ham, Ground Beef & Extra Cheese.

I pay and wait no more than 5 minutes for the slices. There are signs all over the place telling you things you “can’t” do. I don’t take offense to them. I’m sure there’s a good reason for it. I worked in retail for over 10 years and no rules makes for large headaches. I do favor the “POUR ON YOUR PLATE ***FIRST*** THEN ON YOUR PIZZA” sign, lots of intricate stenciling going on there.

Warning: Do As You’re Told

These dudes are large and foldable. They are surprisingly big as you can see from the double plating under them.  The crust is crispy, the sauce is sweet and it’s got the right amount of pooling grease to keep the Pizza in the delicious zone. I don’t know that I could tell you I preferred one over the other but if you’re going to eat only one then you should probably go Cheese.

Pepperoni Slice

The Ground Beef slice had me in flashback mode. In the early ’80s I would eat Pizza from a joint in Westchester, I think it was called International Pizza. Their Ground Beef was very similar in look and taste to this.  They ended up going out of business when Domino’s started spreading their tentacles around town. That’s one of the reasons why you should support locally owned shops and not those homogenized machines.

If you wanna go the full pie route Mauro’s has Medium, Large and XL. They’re open pretty late too(til 4AM on Sun-Tues & 5AM on Wed-Sat) and deliver locally, what’s not to love?

Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies in Hollywood, FL

Opened in 1958, Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies is an icon for comfort food fans in Hollywood, Florida. I’ve known about Sonny’s for years and I’m embarrassed to say that I had never made it up here till now.

As I got off of my car I was slapped in the face with the most mesmerizing grilled steak smell. I was left in a trance. No, I was actually left in a trance and couldn’t order. It doesn’t help that there are fresh baked hogie breads all over the place either. I could not get my words out. My cousin Fred who was with me, laughed and had to take over ordering duties while I tried to come back to my senses.

They ask that you to order the Steak Hogies by number which is why Fred hadto jump in before. The original plan was to eat in but those changed when I realized how late it was getting, it became a to go order. We ordered a #50 and a Meatball Hogie with Mozzarella. A #50 is a Steak Hogie with Sauce and Fried Onions, we add Provolone Cheese for good measure.

We’re handed our hogies, head to my car and realize there is no way we can drive for 45 minutes back home with that smell. We bust open the subs and I first try the Meatball Hogie. It’s covered in cheese and their homemade sauce on one of their homemade rolls, you already know this is a setup for success. The balls are moist and full of that great meatball taste. Yes, I just used the word meatball as an adjective, so what! It was very meatbally and very good.

Meatball Hogie

Before we get to the steak hogie, I thought their burger hogie deserved a mention. Not because I had one but because I watched them putting a fresh patty on the flat top and it should be noted to the burger aficionados.

I probably should have had a #90 (Steak with Onions) and added Provolone just to get a good idea of what a “standard” cheese steak tastes like here. I didn’t and am glad we went the sauced route. It added a dimension to a cheese steak I hadn’t experienced. I’ve tried the “with Mushrooms or Peppers” but that doesn’t do it for me. I could really get with this version but since I just had to, we went back and ordered a #90 while still in the parking lot to compare. I liked the #50 and it may grow on me but I loved the #90, standard it is.

I suggest you watch Sonny’s Famous Steak Hogies on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. It shows what a restaurant committed to quality goes through daily to serve you.

Thanks to The Chowfather for pushing me to finally eat here, I owe you not one but a few.

So what are you waiting for? Just go &

Waffleworks in Hollywood, Florida

I was meeting up with someone in Hollywood and was looking for a diner type establishment to have a late breakfast/early lunch kinda meal. Waffleworks in Hollywood fit the bill nicely so I got there a little bit early and ordered a coffee while I waited. It was a classic greasy spoon cup of coffee that was enhanced by (needed) all the half & half and sugar I added. I can’t resist Patty Melts and with one on the menu I felt obligated to try it out. Since I was at Waffleworks I also felt it necessary to order some waffles. My meal was now set, a Patty Melt with a Belgian Waffle chaser.

Patty Melt

The Patty Melt had all the necessary items to be spectacular including  a “Freshly made 7.25 oz. burger”  according to their menu. The grilled/sauteed onions were there and a slice of Swiss cheese tried to work their magic on me but just managed to create the “expected” Patty Melt flavors without having any amazing going on. The Patty Melt was just a solid standard affair. I also took issue with the Patty Melt being listed under “Sandwiches” when there’s a “Hamburgers” portion of the menu. But, hey that’s  me…

Belgian Waffle

The Belgian Waffle acted as the dessert portion of my meal. This dude was so good, moist on the inside and buttery tasting that I couldn’t let go of it. I filled up some of the holes with regular maple syrup and it was about as perfect of a waffle that you could hope to have. There were plenty of topping options but classic aka plain was where it’s at if you’re wondering my thoughts. The Waffle worked for me but the Patty Melt was just going through the motions.

Quickie’s Burgers And Wings In Hollywood, Florida

Quickie's Outdoor Sign

Quickie’s Burger & Wings has 2 1 location(s), 1 in Hollywood and the other in Pembroke Pines. The Hollywood location has a drive-thru but we won’t be using that today. The Menu has everything from Chicken to Mahi-Mahi Sandwiches but I think we all know the Burger and Wings is what they’re known for (if you don’t, you will soon). My wife Marcela orders the Quickie’s Original 1/3 pound Deluxe (meaning it brings Lettuce and Tomato) with Cheese & Bacon.

Quickie’s 1/2 lb. Burger with Cheese & Bacon

I have the Quickie’s Original 1/2 pound with Bacon and Cheese (all Burgers have Onion Strings and Quickie’s Sauce) and 12 Wings (6 Golden BBQ and 6 Extremely Hot) for good measure.

Order of Half Extremely Hot & Half Golden BBQ Wings

We decide on Combos which include Fries and a Fountain Drink. Let’s talk Wings. They were crispy and fried with no breading. The Extremely Hot was so freakin’ Hot but the Golden BBQ Sauce was pretty amazing. What’s even better is if you ask, they’ll mix both sauces for you which is what I’d suggest (although the Medium and Golden BBQ is a safer mix). The Burgers were awesome. They had a great smokey flavor and the Fries were good also (they had some Seasoned Salt on them). You’ll also be served a side of their Quickie’s Sauce with your meal. Use the Quickie’s Sauce to dip your Fries, trust me on this one! Other great food to order from here:

Le Tub In Hollywood, Florida

I’ve been hearing the rumblings about Le Tub for quite a while now. I mean, the most asked question I get is when are you going to write about Le Tub? For those of you who don’t know about the hype, a few years back GQ as well as Oprah named Le Tub’s burger the best in the country.

I had been putting it off but I felt with the weather being a little on the colder side, this was as good a time as any. I was speaking to my friend in the morning when I suggested we should go right when they open that way we would not have to worry about the rumored long wait to be seated or the long wait for burgers (which I’ve heard can be sometimes upwards of an hour). Apparently they can only fit 6 burgers on the grill at a time. If you do make the drive, make sure you slow down because you might pass the place like we did. There was no line to speak off when we arrived nor when we left.

The decor in Le Tub is rather cool with toilets, tubs, and signs all over the place proclaiming that they do not accept credit cards (but there is an ATM available) and it’s right by the water (for you romantic types).

My wife and a friend of ours sat in this secluded little picnic area that seemed to be falling apart(in keeping with all the ambiance). We are handed our photocopied menus but we already knew what we wanted. The ladies ordered 2 cups of chili: Le Tub Chili: Ground Sirloin, fried, drained, then added to our caldron of tomatoes, green peppers, onions and seasonings. I believe I saw beans in there as well.

Chili w/Crackers

The Chili was good and had a little bit of heat. I had a small taste since I had ordered a Chili Cheese Dog. Now that thing was pretty amazing.

Chili Cheese Dog

It had American cheese on it which I thought was a great idea instead of the nacho cheese most places love to use. We also ordered a large order of their steak Fries. I love the thicker cut fries so I was not disappointed. Of course, I had the 13 oz. Sirloin Burger with Swiss cheese.

Cheeseburger

So how was it? My wife Marcela was not impressed, my friend liked the Chili Cheese Dog better and Me? Well, I thought it tasted liked
Keg South’s burger which I happen to love so it’s no slight to them. The girls also had a slice of Key Lime Pie which they were raving about. It tasted like a lime cheesecake to me but maybe that’s the idea. And for all I have heard about the staff, I thought our waiter was pretty cool. So if you’ve never been here, you should come for the experience alone. It’ll be worth the trip.
