There’s something Kosher going on at House of Dog in Miami Beach
Posted by: | CommentsThe minute I walked into House of Dog I fell in love with the decor. Old Coke and brand propaganda all over the walls and tables in a dimly lit environment, my kinda place. House of Dog is a Kosher hot dog joint which means in Burger Beast terms, you’re not getting any cheese on your dog. There is no dairy on meat action unless the item in question is parve (neutral aka non dairy or meat).

Chili Dog
Flip Burger Bar in North Miami, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsLast time I was at Flip Burger Bar there were different owners. Since then a couple of brothers who were fans of the joint decided to buy it up once it was put up for sale. They’ve changed a few things on the menu but the food is still great and in the case of the mac n’ cheese, better than I remembered it.
I started with the hot wings. You can of course go the mild or medium route but I opted for hot on this particular occasion. Their homemade hot sauce, made with 3 different peppers can be brutal to non chili heads but if you’re looking for some heat and flavor this is definitely it. Took a good look at the wing in the picture and you can see the pieces of the diced peppers.

Bulldog Burger in North Miami
Posted by: | CommentsIt’s been almost 3 years since the first time I stepped foot into Bulldog Barbecue. I was aware that Bulldog Burger was right next door but not that they’re essentially the same restaurant, there is one menu after all. Enough of that talk, let’s get on to the food.
We have to start with the cornbread. They are definitely shaped differently from the last time. Good bye cast iron skillet slice and hello corn bread cork shape. The duders were still served room temp and still good, no change here.

BurgerFi in Lauderdale By The Sea, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsBurgerFi has been open for a little while now but I put off checking it out since all I would really hear about it are the Shake Shack comparisons. There is no doubt that this is indeed a Shack Shack clone down to having Concretes (Frozen Custard). They do however have more options when it comes to dressing your burger but how does the food stack up to the Shack?

Cry and Fries
Burger Monger – Tampa, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsI love cartoon characters and/or mascots from the burger chains’ early days. So I always get excited when some never indie joint has decided have their own dude (or dudette) representing the place. On the flip-side of this coin, you always hope that the resto has some good food or it’s just a waste of a monger.
My wife was with me but just wanted something to drink so I took this opportunity to order her a Hershey Chocolate Häagen-Dazs Milk Shake that she didn’t want (maybe she didn’t but I needed to try it). I go for the Fries (Double Order which is 1 pound), Chili Dog and The Burger Monger (6 oz. of Akaushi Kobe Beef).

Hershey's Chocolate Shake
The shake arrives and I watch the person who claimed they didn’t want any, slurping away. I take a taste and it’s just like a milk shake version of a Hershey’s candy bar (makes sense I guess). The fries are crispy, delicious and since I don’t end up eating them all taken to go.

Crispy Fries

Chili Cheese Dog
The Hot Dog is also Akaushi Beef and topped with an amazing chili sauce. This could be, might be and is, probably the Best Chili Dog I’ve ever had. Honestly, no joke. I loved it and I’m still thinking of it lovingly like a love affair from summer camp in junior high.

Cheeseburger with Buttery Toasted Bun in the back

Cheese Burger waiting for me
There’s nothing like a fresh baked bun to get you excited about what’s in-between it. The burger had a nice char, was very flavorful and at 6 oz wasn’t too big of burger. If it’s too small for you, you can go “The Monster Monger” route which are 2 – 8 oz. patties. I chose to go with good ole’ neon yellow American which was the right choice. The buns are mildly garlic buttered which I didn’t care for. I’m gonna assume you can ask for it just toasted which I will do next time. And yes, there will be a next time.

Colonel Mustard Brings You All The Wiener News
Posted by: | CommentsLet me start off by saying how happy I am to be a new edition to the Burger Beast’s blog. It goes without saying that burgers and dogs go together like peanut butter and jelly. I’m not a connoisseur of pb&j, but I am a connoisseur of hot dogs. I have no idea how many hot dogs I’ve enjoyed thus far in my life, but it’s definitely rivals the amount of burgers the Beast has consumed.
Hot dogs are as special to Americans as apple pie, we consume approximately 20 billion hot dogs per year and in 2010 consumers spent more than $1.6 billion on hot dogs in U.S. supermarkets ( I’m not the only one that loves a good hot dog). See, I was born and raised in a city that takes its hot dogs VERY seriously – Chicago. To Chicagoans there is only one way to make the perfect dog… Chicago Style.
Chicago has earned bragging rights for having more hot dog joints than it does McDonald’s, Burger Kings, and Wendy’s combined. . In fact, the Chicago Style dog is so special it even has its own badge on Foursquare. Please don’t rub it in to Burger Beast that Foursquare still doesn’t have a burger badge of any sort, he gets a little upset.
Now of course there are many different kinds of delicious hot dogs, however when properly constructed, the ingredients of a Chicago-Style hot dog will create euphoria in and around a bun.
This “proper construction” goes like this…
- You start with the most important ingredient, the dog itself. A real Chicago-Style dog is usually made with a Vienna Beef hot dog, the local favorite. The dog is kosher, all-beef with a natural casing that “snaps” when you bite into it. It is cooked by either steaming or simmering (another option is grilling, which is called a “Chardog”).
- What good is any hot dog without its bun? Not a very good one, that’s why a poppy seed bun is used. The most common brand that is used in most places is S. Rosen’s Mary Ann from the Alpha Baking Company because of its ability to handle the steam warming that’s used to heat it up.
- Do you have your garden gloves on? Good… Now it’s time to drag the dog through the garden (a term used to describe the specific and special combination of condiments that go on a Chicago-Style dog).
- The first condiment is plain yellow mustard and is the ONLY one that will be squeezed from a bottle.
- The next condiment is a specific sweet pickle relish that is unique because it is dyed bright neon green (it more closely resembles kryptonite than relish).
- After that comes a handful of diced, raw white onions.
- Next come the tomato wedges… usually two or three, half wedges tucked in next to the dog on the same side.
- One kosher pickle “spear” is then laid between the dog and the bun, usually on the opposite side of the tomato wedges.
- After that, two or three sport peppers are placed on top of the relish and chopped onions. If you are not familiar, sport peppers are green, around 1-1/2 inches long, and are medium hot. Some places may ask you if you want your dog “with”… they are asking you if you want your dog with sport peppers or without.
- Last but not least… a dash of celery salt to lightly dust the top of your dog.
Now I’m sure you have noticed that I don’t mention the “K” word. That’s because ketchup is NEVER used on a Chicago Style dog and many places do not even offer it because of this. In fact, some places will ask you to leave if you ask for ketchup on your Chicago-Style dog.
Stay tuned as I start eating and reviewing my way through various hot dogs in Miami, Chicago, and beyond.
CG Burgers in Kendall, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsI’ve been to the CG Burgers in Kendall 3 times and I’ve had great experiences every time. The only thing I don’t care for is the ordering system which seems to get backed up very easily. You walk in, look over the menu and order but it takes longer than it should. It might not even be CG Burgers fault, it could be just dummy customers which is what I’m leaning towards.

CG Hot Dog
I only tried the hot dog the first time and it was a great beef hot dog. He was sliced in half which I happen to like. I added some mustard and I was good to go.

CG Fries

CG Onion Rings
On the “Sides” front you have 4 options: Hand Cut Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Zucchini Fries and Onion Rings. My pick hands down were the fresh cut fries. I enjoyed them each time I ordered them. Sweet Potato Fries and Onion Rings (one time they were a bit too oily) were good. My wife had the Zucchini Fries and loved them. I’m not a Zucchini kinda dude but they look appetizing.

CG Burger w/Cheese
There are 9 burgers on the “Classics” menu. You also have the option of ordering a Kobe, Bison or Turkey Burger on the specialty side. I gotta say that I preferred the CG Burger over the Kobe (American not Japanese) Burger. The CG Burger which is a double stack with just cheese was perfect for me. When I tried to add a whole bunch of condiments it died a slow painful death. Keep it simple, at least I did.
I closed out one of the nights with a Gelato Shake of half Vanilla Bean and half Dark Chocolate. So good and the perfect end to a solid burger & fries.

Jaxson’s ol’ school Ice Cream Parlour in Dania Beach, Florida
Posted by: | Comments
Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour has been around for over 50 years. I’ve come by here quite a few times to wait in line outside for the ice cream, which is homemade and great by the way. Once you step foot inside you almost feel as if nothing has changed inside since its opening. The first thing to your right once inside is a gigantic selection of candies, in particular some you probably haven’t seen in years.

I ate here 2 twice within the last couple of weeks and each time I was seated in a different part of the restaurant (there are 2 rooms). The first is mostly long tables that can be shared by different groups of folks and the 2nd is all individual tables. One of the first things I was asked by the server on both occasions was whether I’d like some popcorn while I waited for my food. The first time I passed on it but on the following occasion I figured I might as well.

I was with my cousin Fred and convinced him to try eating at Jaxson’s by telling him I had only tried their ice cream. He was in amazement at the place and we both were looking over the menu when the waitress came up to us. And then it happened…..I ordered a Coke. I was told “We only serve a homemade Cola.” I was intrigued so I said “Yes”. One of the best “Yeses” of my life. The sip was so delicious that I didn’t want it to end. Fred took one sip and didn’t want to give back my cup. It was settled. He needed his own cup and I had a new obsession.

| Jaxson’s Cola: Where have you been all my life? |
In the midst of our cola battle my Patty Melt arrived. I also have a well documented obsession with Patty Melts. The dude I was served fit right in with his marble rye bread. It was nice, juicy and delicious.

Right before getting up to leave we decided to each order a shake. We take a couple of sips and take it to go along with a to go cup of the cola.

On my second visit I was with my wife Marcela. I couldn’t stop talking to her about how great the cola was, so she ordered the pink lemonade. I ordered a Cola and kept it out of her reach (even though she didn’t want it). I decided on some potato pancakes to start with. There was nothing really special here but that didn’t stop me from eating them all.

Marcela decided to order the Patty Melt while I couldn’t help myself and ordered this ridiculously sized 1 pound hot dog called the Artillery Dog. It’s served with some relishes and chopped onions on the side. I went straight mustard on this mutha.

Marcela though I was in way over my head because I didn’t finish it. I don’t know what I was thinking but in the end it worked out. The dog was even better later when I finished it while watching Survivor at home. Days later I was having some hot flashes about that hot dog. And what about Jaxson’s Cola you ask? I’m still thinking about the cola with some thoughts of the patty melt peppered in.
