You Know What’s Really Good? The Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog Food Truck

Look at this fella! I’m hungry all over again.

You know what’s really good? The Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog Food Truck.

I was standing in line waiting to order from a Food Truck (no I won’t name them) on Monday at Arts Park where I had a clear view of Dog Eat Dog. As I inched up closer to place my order all I could think about was why wasn’t I eating the Chili Cheese Dog from Dog Eat Dog. It was too much for me to handle and much like a Zombie lusting Brains, I needed a D.E.D. fix.

The Dog is wrapped in Bacon and smothered in their homemade Chili and homemade Cheese Sauce. I chose to skip out on the Potato Sticks as I’m quite content with just these toppings. The Chili which had no beans (Yes!) had the right amount of beefiness and a touch of sweet. It could have probably only been better by adding a dash of Hot Sauce, not their fault but mine.

I ordered 2 and pretty much inhaled them. It was almost as if I never even had them. So I ordered a 3rd just so my wife could try it but she was too consumed with her Asquerosito Dog. Your next question must be, what is an Asquerosito Dog?

It’s a Venezuelan Street Food Style Hot Dog with Garlic Mayo, Pink Sauce, Ketchup, Mustard, Corn, Raw Onions, Potato Sticks and Parmesan Cheese. Another must try but it really is a bit of an acquired taste. In the meantime, take a good long look at the Chili Cheese Dog. It really is a thing of beauty.

Burger Freak in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

Physical Menu at Burger Freak

What are you, some kinda Burger Freak?

We’ve all been there, someone calls you a Burger Freak and you think about it and agree. Hey, it doesn’t hurt to be honest with yourself. Burger Freak in Ft. Lauderdale fills the void for your kind ,um err our kind. The menu has some interesting concoctions on it, check them out below:

Burger Freak has a sideshow theme which I happen to really dig. The walls are covered with old Sideshow/Carny Posters. I almost felt right at home.

There are plenty of options but I wanted to keep it simple for my first order. There’s a hot dog called the Beast but it’s half a pound and if I’m planning on having a burger too it would be a bad idea. I end up with the Grilled Devil Dog (half a Beast) and throw in a cup of their “Hamburger Chili”. On the burger side, I create my own: 6 oz. Angus Patty, Brioche Bakery Kaiser with Bacon and Cheddar Cheese (American was not available).

The “Hamburger Chili” is Hormel’s Chili and if I’m wrong (which is doubtful in this case) then it must be closest replica to it I’ve ever tasted. If you like Hormel canned Chili then this is for you, for me it was not. There went my original plan to dip the dog in the chili! I liked the toasted fluffy bread my Dog was served in. The jumbo half Hot Dog was split in half and crisped up. Some raw Onions and Yellow Mustard rounded out my toppings for the Grilled Devil Dog.

The fries are “Natural Cut Fries” which means they’re not fresh cut but are as close as you can get by using the frozen stuff. And the burger? The Burger is a top notch fast style burger. I just wish they had American Cheese as I think it’s a better option for this type of burger.

I’d like to go back and try out one of their specialty burgers, maybe The Sword Swallower (Burger topped with Sliced Italian Sausage) or The Two Headed Man (Burger topped with Hot Dog). Meat on Meat action, isn’t that what it’s all about my fellow Burger Freaks?

Doggi Style…From Cart to Restaurant

In early April Doggi Style the Hot Dog cart serving up Venezuelan style Hot Dogs, Burgers and Chicken Sandwiches announced it would be closing up shop at its current location and that they would be back soon. And yes, they’re back but gone is the cart. They’ve set up shop right off of Coral Way and SW 67th Avenue. Laura who owns Doggi Style has also expanded the menu to include Chili Dogs, Chicago Dogs and a few other ditties. But you’ll have to see for yourself when you visit. For now:

Hot Diggity Dogs & More in Dania Beach, Florida

Hot Diggity Dogs & More in Dania Beach is one of those roadside stands that you read about and wish was in your neighborhood. There’s nothing fancy here just a hot dog joint by some good folks serving up wieners with some Chicago love thrown in.

Inside of Hot Diggity Dog

Once inside you’ll realize it’s not very big and seating is only outdoors on picnic tables. You could just place a phone order and pick up via the handy dandy “anti-drive thru” window they have also. Another thing to remember is that Hot Diggity Dogs is CASH only and not open past 4:30PM plus they’re closed on Sundays & Mondays.

We decided to try out a couple of things. I saw a burger and of course I had to have it. I wasn’t expecting big things and I also wasn’t expecting to be transported to another time. This burger is exactly what your high school cafeteria used to serve. Sure, it’s not the most special burger in the land but it brought me much comfort to remember that feeling and flavor.

The beer battered onion rings were nice and crispy. They also had the fatal flaw where it’s a battle to take a bite and not remove the entire onion innards of the ring. They do look nice in the picture though.

Jake’s Wayback Burgers in Coconut Creek, Florida

Jake’s Wayback Burgers from Delaware is the latest chain of burger joints to make its way to South Florida and first open up in the Coral Springs area (after Elevation Burger & Smashburger). The area appears to be a hotbed of burger import activity. Jake’s has been around for a little over 20 years and has locations in about 10 other states.

After scanning the menu I settle on the Jake Cheeseburger (Double Patty) and a Chili Cheese Dog. The all beef Hot Dog is served up almost fully sliced in half on a toasted bun with a halved American Cheese slice, Chili and raw Onions (my addition). The Chili Cheese combo brought out a bit of sweetness which I should have taken advantage of with some dabs of hot sauce, but didn’t. The Hot Dog isn’t going to disappoint anyone but it’s also not going to get its own fanpage on Facebook.
