At Last, Latin House Burger & Taco Bar in Kendall
Posted by: | Comments
They’re baaaaaaack! That’s right, Latin House Grill now Latin House Burger & Taco Bar is open. It had been a while since I had eaten from LHG since they’ve been working on this project for the last few months. I know the menu by heart and it’s always very difficult when trying to decide what to have. The restaurant has ramped up things and back are the Twisted Potatoes which only old school Stalkers (LHG fans) will recognize.

CG Burgers in Kendall, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsI’ve been to the CG Burgers in Kendall 3 times and I’ve had great experiences every time. The only thing I don’t care for is the ordering system which seems to get backed up very easily. You walk in, look over the menu and order but it takes longer than it should. It might not even be CG Burgers fault, it could be just dummy customers which is what I’m leaning towards.

CG Hot Dog
I only tried the hot dog the first time and it was a great beef hot dog. He was sliced in half which I happen to like. I added some mustard and I was good to go.

CG Fries

CG Onion Rings
On the “Sides” front you have 4 options: Hand Cut Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Zucchini Fries and Onion Rings. My pick hands down were the fresh cut fries. I enjoyed them each time I ordered them. Sweet Potato Fries and Onion Rings (one time they were a bit too oily) were good. My wife had the Zucchini Fries and loved them. I’m not a Zucchini kinda dude but they look appetizing.

CG Burger w/Cheese
There are 9 burgers on the “Classics” menu. You also have the option of ordering a Kobe, Bison or Turkey Burger on the specialty side. I gotta say that I preferred the CG Burger over the Kobe (American not Japanese) Burger. The CG Burger which is a double stack with just cheese was perfect for me. When I tried to add a whole bunch of condiments it died a slow painful death. Keep it simple, at least I did.
I closed out one of the nights with a Gelato Shake of half Vanilla Bean and half Dark Chocolate. So good and the perfect end to a solid burger & fries.

Steak n’ Shake – Kendall, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsMy favorite thing about Steak n’ Shake is that it’s open 24 hours. It’s unfortunate for me that the nearest one is about a good 30 minutes away. When they’re on, they’re absolutely awesome, when they’re not, it can be some of the worst food you’ve ever had. I found myself eating here on an “iffy” nights. I had no fries at all because I don’t care for them so I had onion rings. They were nothing special. I started off the festivities with a hot dog.

They’re split in half and cooked on the flat top. It was good but not great. I asked for cheese and grilled onions on it but in retrospect maybe grilled onions and mustard would have made a more dynamic combination. It had been while so I figured I’d also try out their “Cheesy Cheddar Steakburger”.

That was a no go for me. It was flat and flavorless, kinda sad because the slice of cheese got me excited when I saw it served up. As for the melts? Well, the real reason I came here is because I’ve been obsessed with Patty Melts as of late.

| Frisco Melt |
So I wanted to have a Frisco Melt: Buttery & Toasted Sourdough Bread, 2 Steakburger patties, American and Swiss cheeses and their Frisco sauce. I was totally indifferent to this burger. I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. If it was on a sinking ship, I’m not sure if I would save it.
The Patty Melt was Buttery & Toasted Rye Bread, 2 Steakburger patties, American cheese and grilled onions and was better. It wasn’t the best Patty Melt I’ve ever had but it’s up there in the top 1/3 percentage, which is not too bad considering everything else.

Sweetness Bake Shop & Cafe – Kendall, Florida

Sweetness Store Front
I stumbled (luckily) upon Sweetness Bake Shop because of a Twitter RT (for the non Twitter folks out there, a re-tweet aka re-post) and started to follow them. A couple days passed and I noticed that they tweeted a photo of some delicious looking cupcakes.

I had wanted to visit several times and failed to do so because of traffic and/or time restraints. I finally had some free time and paid them a visit. The bake shop has a very modern coffee house look to it and has a nice sized lcd screen only playing the food network. I decided to order the “Thrilla in Vanilla”, “Chocolate3″, “Peanut Bund” and some “G.O.A.T” cookies (Greatest of all time? stuffed with chocolate, it’s possible).

While I was there, I overheard some of the specialty cakes they’ve made for customers. I had never heard of an Irish Car Bomb cake but I will definitely be ordering one for my next birthday celebration. So if you are in the mood for some delicious treats then I recommend giving Sweetness a try.

Tamiami Subs – West Kendall, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsTamiami Subs came to my attention a few months back during their year anniversary party. How did they celebrate? By having a cheesesteak eating competition with the winner receiving a 32″ TV. Sounds like my kind of competition. More on that later.
Caveman and I decided to hit up Tamiami Subs and see what they’re all about. We figured we should order 2 subs and split them, divide and conquer. We ordered their standard Philly Cheese (size: Full not Half) with Caveman deciding he should have lettuce on his half. A strand of that dastardly stuff made it onto my side as you can see in the picture. Great cheesesteak which is even better without lettuce.

While I disagree with the “Juicy All Beef Patty” mentioned on their menu, it is in fact a frozen burger patty for the burgers and/or burger sub. We went Full (no Halfsies around here) size on the Burger Sub with Bacon.

The bacon was the real deal, not that reheated fast food style bacon that seems to be popping up at a whole bunch of sub shops. It was a solid sub but I was hoping for more because of the description.
The fries are the seasoned kind and tasted pretty good with the cheese sauce.

I can’t help but think we messed up. We should have ordered one of their specialty subs like the Firecracker Chicken (chicken topped with buffalo wing sauce) or the Garlic Steak Sub (Philly steak topped with their homemade Garlic sauce). Hey, there’s always next time. A good thing for those of you who live near Tamiami Subs is that you can also place your order online through their website.
Now, getting back to their 1 year anniversary, courtesy of Tamiami Subs is a video recap of their eating contest:

Gorilla B’s Deep Fried Breaded Burgers – Kendall, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsGorilla B’s has been around since 2006 but in a bit of a different incarnation. It did not have a store front and was/is still known for its homemade cheesecakes. For the opening of Gorilla B’s, in addition to the cheesecakes they added a bunch of food you’d find at the fair (you carnies should be excited about this): “Dipped” OREO, Snickers, Twinkies, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, Kit Kat, Butterfinger, Funnel Cake, Chloebe Cake (Guava Funnel Cake), Corndogs, Deep Fried Ice Cream Sandwich and “Dipped” Cheesecake. “Dipped” is Gorilla B’s nice way of saying deep fried. Also on the menu is their hot dog (which is deep fried) and their signature burger, the Boscoe Burger. The toppings for the hot dog are simple, either ketchup (if you’re 5 years old and have ketchup on everything like some people I know) and mustard. There’s a nice deli mustard that has a great horseradish kick to it, it’s not too much though.

| The Hot Dog at Gorilla B’s |
The hot dog is all beef, served on a hot dog potato bun and because it’s deep fried gives off a popping noise when you bite into it. The Boscoe Burger is a mix of a Cuban bistec empanizado (breaded steak) and a Cuban frita (cuban hamburger). It’s topped with potato sticks and served on a potato roll.

The beef patty is tightly packed and seasoned well, then breaded and deep fried. The patty itself is rather dry. I thought it tasted great but the flavors and dryness worked better with the Boscoe Burger a la Milanese (which includes ham and swiss cheese). I also added some mayo and a bit of the deli mustard. By the way, the owner will cook the burger to a more medium/medium well type of temperature if you ask him.

After having the Boscoe Burger, we (I was with Caveman) decided to try one of the “Dipped” items, Kit Kat it is. After dipping and frying, the Kat is topped with powdered sugar and some chocolate syrup.

I’m not dessert specialist but I liked it, Caveman was eating it like someone was going to take the plate away from him. I didn’t get to try the cheesecake but I would definitely like to try the Guava Cheesecake. The owner let us try one of his new concoctions, “Dipped” Twizzlers. I don’t like Twizzlers because it reminds me of stomach medicine but Caveman devoured it. The owner is dipping and frying everything in site so if you have any ideas send it his way. I’m sure he’d try it.

Baptist Hospital – Kendall, Florida

I didn’t eat here because I had heard through the grapevine how wonderful it is. I happen to be in the hospital waiting room and was hungry. I’ve been here a few times before and just had coffee, never any food. I was with my dad, Fred and Michelle. The 3 dudes get Cheeseburgers while Michelle has the Tuna Salad.
My father also orders a Hot Dog for good measure. I understand this is a hospital and they have “healthy eating alternatives”. I was reading all about it in “Peppy’s Picks”but
the quality of the food being served was pretty crappy. At least it wasn’t expensive. I will have to say this, the buns for the burger and hot dog were wheat. Both buns were fresh and tasted really good. The opposite of the food they were holding. The thickness of the burger patty was about a quarter of the bun.
The taste of the burger was pretty bad. Not even the Rickey’s Hot Sauce that we doused on it was able to salvage it.
The jumbo hot dog was not beef but a mix (a bad mix at that). My father took one bite and refused to eat anymore. We all did actually.
The fries were baked but were not fresh cut. Those type of fries don’t bake well, they need to be a little thicker (oh well).
Michelle’s salad was the highlight of the meal to me. Just because of one thing she said. She took a bite of the broccoli and said “This tastes like the Miami Seaquarium”. That comment forced Fred to also try the broccoli but I stayed away (he was also dumbfounded). I’ve been to the Miami Seaquarium in the last couple of years. It was such a bad experience I can’t imagine reliving it in Flav-O-Rama.
