You know what’s really good? The Mini Fritas at Sergio’s

You know what’s really good? The Mini Fritas at Sergio’s. I love the Croquetas at Sergio’s and now I can add their Mini Fritas to my love list. These 3 or 4 bite Fritas come on fresh little rolls with the just fried papa juliannas (Julienne Potatoes), diced raw Onions and Ketchup. It can be a great little breakfast dish or an afternoon snack, I would know. They’re available at all 5 Sergio’s locations in Miami but there’s one catch, because the rolls are baked daily and in limited quantities once they’re out so are the Fritas. You know what needs to be done.

Rock That Burger – Kendall, Florida

Rock That Burger

Anyone that  followed the Street Food Scene in South Florida from the beginning (late 2009) knows of the Yellow Submarine. They were the 3rd truck to hit Miami and really made me look differently at the Colombian Style Street Food they were serving. I was tired of all the frozen patty and recycled sauces all those joints were using.  The Yellow Submarine Burgers & Hot Dogs had better versions of those similar sauces and behind them was a great Burger or Hot Dog that could stand alone, no toppings necessary.

It was both a sad and great moment for them when they retired their Truck and were committed to opening Rock That Burger in Kendall. They were gone for close to a year. If you’re wondering what happened to the truck, the former Yellow Submarine is now Mushaboom, a Vegan Burger Truck.

I visited a couple of times when they first opened Rock That Burger back in August but was just not sold on it. It didn’t seem to be the same, there was something off. I figured I’d give a few months and hope that they had found their groove.

My wife was always a giant fan of their Killer Queen Sandwich which was not on the original Rock That Burger menu. It was great to see it on the Specials board when we walked in.

We started with the Cheese Fries. These guys were the standard Fries topped with Cheese. You could also add Chili too but I’d like to see the Yellow Submarine Fries with the Pineapple and House-made Tomato Sauces make the menu. I’m sure they’d make them for anyone who asks but some folks don’t even know about it so maybe it’s like a “Secret Menu” item.

Back in the day the Killer Queen came in long Sub style bread but because of the strip mall they’re in it’s not possible (there’s one of those chain sub shops). The K-Queen is a Chicken Sandwich but with Buffalo Chicken Cold Cuts instead of the usual slab of Chicken. It’s topped with Mozzarella Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Onions, Garlic Mayo, & Pesto Sauce. Whoever came out up with this combination of flavors deserves a day named after them.

Rock That Burger allows you to create your own Burger with over 15 options but the Yellow Submarine named after their former life is the one to get. It normally brings Lettuce, Tomato and Onion but I ixnayed those. My Yellow Submarine Burger was topped with Mozzarella Cheese, House-made Tomato Sauce, House-made Mustard, Pineapple Sauce and Crushed Potato Chips. The Burger is a well seasoned patty with the spices mixed into the beef. Another great flavor overload.

There are people who will tell you to go to Chicago or New York for the Best Hot Dog you’ll ever have. I’m telling you that the Paradise City Hot Dog (formerly the Yellow Dog) is one of if not the Best Hot Dog I’ve ever had. The All Beef Hot Dog is sliced and cooked face down on the flat top to get a nice crispy exterior. The toppings are the same as the Yellow Submarine Burger. It’s the real deal.

So all’s well that ends well in Rock That Burger land. Come by, enjoy the Food and check out the restaurant (If you’re a music fan you will love the decor). Now let me get back to my music…

In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines

So we sailed on to the sun
Till we found a sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
In our yellow submarine

We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine

Shula Burger in Kendall Opens Today at 11AM

It took almost 2 years after my mention about Shula Burger but they’re finally within sensible driving distance of me. Today at 11AM you can find one in your neck of the woods as the Kendall Shula Burger is opening its doors to the public. So far there are Shula Burgers in Islamorada , Tampa International Airport & Ft. Lauderdale.  The Delray Beach location is slated to open in early 2013.

Branded Buns Baby!

If you’re not familiar with them, the Shula Burger menu has Burgers (including Turkey & Veggie), Hot Dogs, a couple of Sandwiches (Steak & Chicken) and Salads. I’ve eaten at the Islamorada location. I enjoyed the Shula Burger and that French Onion Burger (Caramelized Onions, Double Gruyere Cheese, Garlic Mayo, Crushed Garlic Croutons) is just dynamite. But, there’s something about that Don Burger (Burger, Hot Dog, Pickle, Onion Sauce, American Cheese, Ketchup, Yellow Mustard on a Brioche Style Bun) that intrigues me. Check out the rest of the menu before you head out so you don’t hold up the line.

Frenchie’s Bistro – West Kendall, Florida

Frenchie’s Bistro in West Kendall opened shop in early August. I had a great lunch there but my camera malfunctioned and I lost all the pictures. I kept telling myself I would be back to eat the days following that lunch which turned into almost 3 months. I finally made it back and got to try the sandwich that eluded me those months ago, Vive Le Rock. We’ll get to that in a little bit.

The waiter mentions to us while taking our drink order that the Soup of the Day is Broccoli Cheese. The Soup is served in a mini cast iron skillet along with 2 pieces of toasted bread. All the Broccoli Cheese Soup components were there but I found it to have to much cheese (as unbelievable as it may sound for me to say that). I’m not a fan of battling a string of cheese with every spoonful. It did taste very good though.

Polo Norte and their Cuban Style Pizza

Most folks think of Polo Norte for 2 things, Ice Cream & Cuban Style Pizza. I’ve never had dessert much less ice cream any of the times I’ve eaten here. Fans of Cuban Style Pizza come here to fulfill their fantasies.

The Croquetas here are divine. They are a bit on the large side and have a certain something that reminds of my favorite Croqueta of my youth, Latin American on Coral Way & 97th Avenue in Westchester (the place is long gone). These are a must order item and a hidden gem amongst Croqueta aficionados.
