Gorilla B’s Deep Fried Breaded Burgers In Kendall, Florida

Gorilla B’s has been around since 2006 but in a bit of a different incarnation. It did not have a store front and was/is still known for its homemade cheesecakes. For the opening of Gorilla B’s, in addition to the cheesecakes they added a bunch of food you’d find at the fair (you carnies should be excited about this): “Dipped” OREO, Snickers, Twinkies, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way, Kit Kat, Butterfinger, Funnel Cake, Chloebe Cake (Guava Funnel Cake), Corndogs, Deep Fried Ice Cream Sandwich and “Dipped” Cheesecake. “Dipped” is Gorilla B’s nice way of saying deep fried. Also on the menu is their hot dog (which is deep fried) and their signature burger, the Boscoe Burger. The toppings for the hot dog are simple, either ketchup (if you’re 5 years old and have ketchup on everything like some people I know) and mustard. There’s a nice deli mustard that has a great horseradish kick to it, it’s not too much though.

The Hot Dog at Gorilla B’s

The hot dog is all beef, served on a hot dog potato bun and because it’s deep fried gives off a popping noise when you bite into it. The Boscoe Burger is a mix of a Cuban bistec empanizado (breaded steak) and a Cuban frita (cuban hamburger). It’s topped with potato sticks and served on a potato roll.

The Boscoe Burger

The beef patty is tightly packed and seasoned well, then breaded and deep fried.  The patty itself is rather dry. I thought it tasted great but the flavors and dryness worked better with the Boscoe Burger a la Milanese (which includes ham and swiss cheese). I also added some mayo and a bit of the deli mustard. By the way, the owner will cook the burger to a more medium/medium well type of temperature if you ask him.

After having the Boscoe Burger, we (I was with Caveman) decided to try one of the “Dipped” items, Kit Kat it is. After dipping and frying, the Kat is topped with powdered sugar and some chocolate syrup.

“Dipped” Kit Kat

I’m not dessert specialist but I liked it, Caveman was eating it like someone was going to take the plate away from him. I didn’t get to try the cheesecake but I would definitely like to try the Guava Cheesecake. The owner let us try one of his new concoctions, “Dipped” Twizzlers. I don’t like Twizzlers because it reminds me of stomach medicine but Caveman devoured it. The owner is dipping and frying everything in site so if you have any ideas send it his way. I’m sure he’d try it.

Baptist Hospital In Kendall, Florida

I didn’t eat here because I had heard through the grapevine how wonderful it is. I happen to be in the hospital waiting room and was hungry. I’ve been here a few times before and just had coffee, never any food. I was with my dad, Fred and Michelle. The 3 dudes get Cheeseburgers while Michelle has the Tuna Salad. My father also orders a Hot Dog for good measure. I understand this is a hospital and they have “healthy eating alternatives”. I was reading all about it in “Peppy’s Picks”but the quality of the food being served was pretty crappy. At least it wasn’t expensive. I will have to say this, the buns for the burger and hot dog were wheat. Both buns were fresh and tasted really good. The opposite of the food they were holding. The thickness of the burger patty was about a quarter of the bun. The taste of the burger was pretty bad. Not even the Rickey’s Hot Sauce that we doused on it was able to salvage it.The jumbo hot dog was not beef but a mix (a bad mix at that). My father took one bite and refused to eat anymore. We all did actually. The fries were baked but were not fresh cut. Those type of fries don’t bake well, they need to be a little thicker (oh well). Michelle’s salad was the highlight of the meal to me. Just because of one thing she said. She took a bite of the broccoli and said “This tastes like the Miami Seaquarium”. That comment forced Fred to also try the broccoli but I stayed away (he was also dumbfounded). I’ve been to the Miami Seaquarium in the last couple of years. It was such a bad experience I can’t imagine reliving it in Flav-O-Rama.

Norman Brothers Produce Lunch And Wagyu Burgers In Kendall, Florida

My mother wanted to have a soup from Norman Brothers Produce. It had been quite a while since I had been here. I had originally heard of Norman Brothers because of their smoothies (this was many years ago before smoothies were everywhere). When Marcela and I lived near there we would shop for beef and chicken just because of the quality was/is so good. Approximately a year ago, Danny Brody mentioned to me that I should try out Norman Brothers’ Wagyu Burgers. I honestly wasn’t even thinking of this when I walked in. I was trying to figure what I was going to choose for lunch. Right when we walk in, to the left of us in a small refrigerated bin was Norman Brothers’ Blue Cheese Dip.

I’ve had this before and it was ridiculously good. My thought at this point was: what could I get to eat that would be a good reason to purchase the blue cheese. When I reached the area where there’s warm food, I found it! Chipotle Chicken Wings!

My mom went with a Pastrami Sandwich. (by the way, purchase 5 sandwiches and the 6th is free, we received a card)

The sandwich is served cold. Don’t know if that makes a difference to anyone but my mom prefers the sandwich warm. She also had a Cheese Soup that was really good.

It had some veggies in it (I remember crunching on carrots at some point). And what could be better with Cheese Soup than a Cheese Biscuit.

The wings were awesome and had a little bit of heat but not too much for you wimps out there. After we had made our lunch decisions we walk by their Cold Cuts/Butcher area and I see this sign:

After a flashback sequence to Danny Brody’s mention of this to me, I decide I have to buy them. For dinner, we’ll have a BBQ. I also wanted to purchase some of their American Style Kobe Hot Dogs but mom reminds me she has a pack of good ole’ faithful Beef Ball Parks. On the grill those guys are so good. Fast forward to 6:30 PM and I bust out the grill at my parent’s house for a Wagyu Burger Party. I purchased 6 regular Wagyu Burgers and 3 with Bacon/Cheddar Cheese mixed into the meat.
All 9 plus 8 of the Ball Park dudes are grilled to as near perfection as I am capable. Unfortunately, because some of my family not well versed in the meat universe, most of the burgers are cooked well done. There was one burger left bunless (only 8 buns to a pack). A few of us including my cousin and I have ours Medium.

I really couldn’t tell much of a difference between the Bacon/Cheddar and the regular except the B/C seemed to be a little more moist. Honestly, this was the best burger I’ve ever grilled. Everyone loved them and like the sign says “YOU”VE GOTTA TRY THEM”.

Donde Timmy Perros Colombianos AKA Caliempanadas In Kendall, Florida

I stopped to eat at Donde Timmy against the wishes of my wife Marcela. I had sworn to myself that I would stop eating at Colombian Fast Food joints because they’re hit and miss…big time! We walk in and the guy at the counter looks as if he’s seen better days (no for real). This guy definitely doesn’t want to be here, at least that’s the vibe he’s giving off. I look over at Marcela and she has the face. What is the face? The “There’s no fuckin’ way I’m eating here” face. I’m on my own. While she goes to the restroom I think to myself “Maybe if the food is good, I can convince her to share it with me“.

I order a Regular Perro, a Carne Sirloin Especial & a Mazorca Desgranada Regular. Once Marcela returns, I tell her what I ordered and she agrees to at least try the food. First up isMazorca Desgranada Regular: It’s a platter of Corn Kernels topped with Potato Sticks, Cheese and Sauces. In this case I went with 3 of their sauces (Pineapple Sauce, Pink Sauce aka Mayo/Ketchup mix and a Curry). Take a look at the picture and you’ll see, it was mostly Potato Sticks.

Regular Perro

It actually looks like a Breakfast Cereal. It tasted good but more Corn would have been nice. The regular Perro was found to be pretty terrible by both of us. It wasn’t a Hot Dog but more of a sausage. Stay away! The Burger was not too bad and Marcela liked it.

This place doesn’t become Donde Timmy till 6PM. I’m sure by that time they’ve had enough time to round up all the homeless dogs and cats in the neighborhood. Just kidding.

Sports Grill In Kendall, Florida

If there’s one reason alone to eat at Sports Grill, it’s their Wings. When I first got into eating Chicken Wings, Hooters was my main stop but once I tasted a Special Grilled Wing at Sports Grill I was hooked. I can now appreciate each on their own merits but for a while it had to be the Special Grilled or no Wing at all.

It had been awhile since my last Special Grilled so my wife Marcela and I hit up the famed Sports Grill. For starters we order the breaded Garlic Mushrooms and an order of Chili Cheese Fries. The Garlic Mushrooms are good but are definitely of the packaged variety.

Garlic Mushrooms

The Chili Cheese Fries while good by bar standards, I like because of the Fries not the Chili. The Cheese is the canned Nacho Cheese kind.

Chili Cheese Fries

Wing time: 10 of the Buffalo Style and 10 of the Special Grilled should be enough. We like the Buffalo style but the Special Grilled are always as good as I remember them.

Special Grilled

There’s also the Miami Heats which I don’t suggest because they’re extremely hot. So you get an idea, scotch bonnets are part of the sauce. I heard the trick for the Special Grilled is they’re fried, tossed in Buffalo Sauce, grilled and then some Worcestershire is brushed on them. It works.

Marcela orders the Tuna Melt which she swears by, as does my family. She is not allowed to kiss me for a full 6 hours after eating this as I hate Tuna.

Tuna Melt w/Chips

I had the Sports Burger with Bacon, Swiss Cheese and some Mayo.

Cheese Burger w/Swiss

It’s good. It’s what I’d call a standard bar burger and there’s really nothing wrong with that tag. At least I don’t think so, although they might.

Keg South Of Kendall In Miami, Florida

I’ve been going to Keg South of Kendall for well over 10 years and I have yet to get tired of coming here. I try to turn on as many people to the greatness of this place. And though I’m so in love with the burgers, I do really like the Wings a bunch also.

Alright, not necessarily the Wings themselves but the grilling and spice on them. May wife is a big fan of the Nachos (Chips, Nacho Cheese, Sour Cream, Chili and Jalapeños). I think it tastes like Nachos you can get at a 7-11.

3/4 lb. Keg Burger

I generally get the 3/4 Pound Burger with Cheddar Cheese and Mayo. Nothing else, the beauty is in its simplicity. The 3/4 Keg Burger is also served with potato chips.

Fresh Cut Fries

I order the fresh cut fries since they’re exceptional. I wouldn’t even bother with Ketchup. And while you’re there if you can fit in some dessert try their Xango. The best explanation I can come up for Xango is a Banana Cheesecake wrapped in Pastry Tortilla and covered in Cinnamon Sugar. You must try it.

The Cheesecake Factory In Kendall, Florida

When I first heard about The Cheesecake Factory over 15 years ago I really had no interest in checking it out. I originally thought it was strictly a dessert restaurant. Since I wasn’t really a fan of cheesecake back then I figured why waste my time. My sister then told about it’s extensive menu and how big the portions were. So I tried it and I have never stopped going. It’s one of the few chain restaurants that still frequent. The original dish that sold me on this place was the Fettuccine with Chicken & Sun-dried Tomatoes (in a Garlic Parmesan Cream sauce) and it’s probably the dish I get a good 75% of the time. I spend the other 25% of the time trying to find anything else I could like as much.

I’m a big appetizers guy and their selection is overwhelming. My wife is always reminding me to control myself when ordering appetizers at Cheesecake Factory. So on this particular afternoon I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Strips and the Popcorn Shrimp. Something about their hot sauce and how moist the Buffalo Chicken Strips are make this a winning app.

Buffalo Chicken Strips

Plus the blue cheese dressing served with the strips is pretty amazing. So amazing in fact, that now The Cheesecake Factory actually will bottle and sell you any of their sauces. I, of course could not resist and purchased a jar of their blue cheese dressing. That sauce is going to sit in my fridge and rot but I just had to buy it. The Popcorn Shrimp are breaded in some type of beer batter and served with 2 sauces. One of which is mayo based and my favorite of the two .

Popcorn Shrimp

Since I decided to go with a Burger this time, I ordered the Ranch House Burger: Pieces of Steak, Sauteed Mushrooms & Onions, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese top their Angus Burger. It’s served with a Garlic Mayo.

Ranch House Burger

Yeah, this is a pretty good one. All the flavors are there and it’s good choice if you like a lot of toppings on your burger. The picture does not do justice to how big and filling this burger really is.
