Tudor House in South Beach makes Ugly Beautiful

Just some weeks ago, Chowfather mentioned that I should check out Tudor House’s Ugly Burger. If he tells me it’s a must then it’s a must. We decide to meet up right at lunch, which for Tudor House starts at 12PM. I arrive a little bit early so I order the Pastry Basket and a Coke which I’m pleasantly happy to find out is of the Mexican variety (with Sugar instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup).

Pastry Basket w/French Butter

The Croissant is absolutely mesmerizing and that French Butter is really unbelievable. I’m going halfsies on these so Chowfather can get a taste when he arrives. They’re all fresh and tasty which is what I needed to open up my appetite for his royal ugliness (the burger not Chowfather).

There’s something Kosher going on at House of Dog in Miami Beach

The minute I walked into House of Dog I fell in love with the decor. Old Coke and brand propaganda all over the walls and tables in a dimly lit environment, my kinda place. House of Dog is a Kosher hot dog joint which means in Burger Beast terms, you’re not getting any cheese on your dog.  There is no dairy on meat action unless the item in question is parve (neutral aka non dairy or meat).

Hogzilla’s Inspired Barbecue in South Beach

I was probably about 20 to 25 feet from the front door of Hogzilla before I was enveloped in a beautiful web of smoke smothering the air. As I walked in, I noticed how different the place looked compared to the previous bbq resto that was here. There are just these little odd artifacts on the walls that I was digging.

Prime 112 – South Beach, Florida

My buddy (an actual friend not the 1980′s toy) called me up and tells me that I must eat at Prime One Twelve. What do I know about Prime One Twelve? It seems as if every celebrity that visits Miami ends up there. In other words, it’s a place that does not normally interest me. After looking over the menu I have a change of heart, comfort food heaven. The prices of course are higher than my usual hot spots. I figured let’s do this, if it’s worth it I’m always willing to pay.

We head out for lunch and decide to make the hard decisions, we order (our table is pictured above): Tomato Basil Soup w/ Mini Fontina Grilled Cheese, Five Cheese Truffle ‘MAC’, KOBE Beef Hot Dog, 1 lb. KOBE Cheeseburger, Sea Salt Baked Potato w/ Vermont Butter, Applewood Smoked Bacon Bits and Chive Sour Cream , Potato Pancakes and Crispy White Truffle French Fries.

Now you must be thinking, there’s no way they ate all that food and you would be correct. Everything was delicious, except for the potato pancakes which I found to be way too crispy and not potato-ey enough. And one last thing, it would be great if they removed the name KOBE from the burger and dog because we all know it’s not authentic KOBE from Japan. For your drooling pleasure, please check out all the pics below especially the one with the bacon chunks on top of the baked potato.

Shake Shack In South Beach Miami Beach, Florida

Opening Day

My first interaction with Shake Shack was at the 2009 Burger Bash at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Shack fever was in full bloom in New York and I was ecstatic that I would be able to try their signature burger in South Florida. And then I had it and thought, what’s the fuss all about? I didn’t get it.

The following year at the 2010 Burger Bash they were back plus they were also 6 months away from opening this location (South Beach). But this time when I tried it, it was different. I immediately got back in line and got a second Shack Burger…..

Kids……And that’s the story of my love affair with the Shack Burger.

Shark Attack Concrete

They recently introduced (Feb 2012) Smoke Shack Burger: American Cheese, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Cherry Pepper Relish & Shack Sauce.

For first timers I suggest you try out the Single Shack Burger, Fries and the Key Lime Pie oh My Concrete. It’s a good solid introduction to what they do best. I prefer their Fresh Squeezed Lemonade over a soft drink and if you’re going to go the Hot Dog route, check out the Frisky Dog (with Kraut and Tomato Simmered Onions).

Some folks love Shack Shack and some don’t find anything special about it. To the latter I say, “Better for me!” There will be less people in line when I’m getting my food.
