Sweet Dogs – Miami, Florida

I live about 4 or 5 blocks from Sweet Dogs. Late last year I remember driving right by the sign and saying to myself, was this always here? It wasn’t opened yet and then all of a sudden a few days later I saw the hurricane shutters open but I had just eaten some Shake Shack. I set my mental lunch calendar for the following day to hit them up.

The Menu has about 9 or 10 pre-set Dogs you can order with 5 of them being named after the popular local sports teams (The Heat, The Dolphins, The Marlin, The Panther & The U). The only sport I’m into is the UFC (you thought I was gonna say eating didn’t you?) and yes, MMA is a sport. I had no preference based on the team name so I chose based on the ingredients. Sweet Dogs does not give you an option when it comes to dog size, they only serve the 1/4 pound Nathan all beef Hot Dog. You can get the dog Boiled, Grilled or Deep Fried but if you don’t tell them your preference you end up with a Grilled dog.

The Dolphins is probably the best dog on the menu followed by Mr. Chill at a close second. The Dolphins is Sweet Dog’s take on a Colombian style dog. They got it right. It’s not overly sweet which is what usually kills those types of dogs. It’s got Bacon, Mozzarella, Pineapple sauce and is topped with those canned potato sticks for some crunch. If there was only one thing I would change, it would be the sticks as I prefer crushed Potato Chips on these dogs. It was most excellent as Ted “Theodore” Logan might say.

Mr. Chill is a Chili Dog. It’s also got diced Red Onions and shredded Cheddar Cheese (not melted). The Chili has chunks of ground Beef seasoned like your Hispanic grandmother might make (heavy handed on the Cumin) with some Black Beans too. I added some Mustard to it and it was good to go.

I’ve ordered the Beef Chili Cheese Fries every time I’ve been here but this is the first time they’ve used the Nacho Cheese sauce instead of the shredded Cheddar Cheese. It takes these Chili Cheese Fries up to Arbetter’s Chili Cheese Fries level (my favorite in South Florida).

A new addition to the menu are their homemade Corn Dogs. They are made to order and each one looks different than the next. It’s very good but I’d suggest changing out the stick as it can’t handle the weight of the 1/4 Hot Dog. Other than that, dip in Mustard (I better not catch you putting Ketchup on this) and enjoy.

For every dog that you order, you get one of those little snack sized candy bars. You can spot them in the pics above if you’re really looking. If you need a more substantial dessert they’ve got a soft serve Ice Cream Machine which means Cones, Sundaes and Shakes.

Me? I’ll take another Mr. Chill.

Buena Vista Deli – Miami, Florida

Buena Vista Deli

A couple of years ago I was introduced to the wonderful world of Quiche at this same place, Buena Vista Deli. It was like the day I learned to ride a bike or when I realized I disliked Lettuce, in other words….a day I won’t forget.

I love the logo for Buena Vista Deli. An overweight Superhero carrying some loaves of bread makes me feel right at home.

Of course I’m going to tell you to try their Quiche. Most of the Quiche are available in mini versions which makes it easy if you want to try a few. As much as I love the Quiche Lorraine (Ham & Cheese) I could also make a strong case for the Goat Cheese & Mushroom being what you should eat.

There are Paninis and Sandwiches on the menu as well. Their version of the Croque-Monsier was a perfectly crafted Ham & Cheese Sandwich. I didn’t inquire about a Croque-Madame (same sandwich topped with an egg) but I’m sure it’s on their ultra secret locals menu.

The Desserts here are beautiful to just sit and look at. I refused to hurt the Strawberry Napoleon that Droolius ordered. He had no problem cutting it and in the process squeezing all the creme out of it. The Tropézienne that we shared fared way better. It was like having a liquored up Creme Burger.

Don’t let the parking situation (limited) deter you from stopping in at Buena Vista Deli. It’s worth the extra effort to come in here and grab some Desserts and Fresh Bread. And some of those eggy little pie shaped things I love so much too.

El Palacio De Los Jugos is the Real Miami

Either you instantly get El Palacio De Los Jugos  or you immediately add to your “do not return list”. Make sure to bring a Spanish speaker with you as its almost like being in a foreign country and that’s part of its charm. El Palacio is the Miami I wish most folks would see when on vacation and the total opposite normally portrayed on TV. I’m lucky enough to live just a few blocks away from this Miami institution and while I could walk, it’s freakin hot out there most of the time.

El Palacio De Los Jugos

Seating for El Palacio is under a giant green tent and to get the full experience you really should eat here and forgo taking the goods home. The food is available in different open air stations featuring things like sandwiches, or the juices/chicharrones area. Since this is El Palacio De Los Jugos (Palace of the Juices or Juice Palace), you can choose a single serving cup (larger sizes available) of your favorite juice with choices like  Watermelon, Papaya or even Coconut Water made fresh by a machete wielding fellow nearby.

Over the course of many years I’ve tried many of the dishes served here and very few are misses. The Frita is unfortunately one of those tragic victims. Luckily, at that same food station I love to order a Pan con Tortilla (Omelette Sandwich) with Ham, Swiss Cheese and served on warm Cuban bread.

Pan Con Tortilla

My wife is Nicaraguan so whenever I walk by the fried food station a couple Queso Fritos are always ordered. Queso Frito are slabs a slightly salty white cheese pan fried to a semi brown deliciousness.

Queso Frito

The real reason to come to El Palacio De Los Jugos is Pork. It’s served in a bunch of different forms including Pan con Lechon (Pork Sandwich) BUT…the Chicharrones are where it’s at. If you’ve never had Pork Rinds in this form then you’re missing out but the reality of the situation is if you have these Chicharrones you will always crave these and only these. There’s such a variety of foods available with something new to try each time which is why I’m glad to have El Palacio right in my backyard.

Jacalito Taqueria Mexicana In Miami, Florida

Jacalito Sign

Jacalito Taqueria Mexicana is owned by the same folks as Mi Rinconcito Mexicano (a big time favorite of mine). Since this is a Taqueria (Taco Shop), the menu focuses on Tacos, Enchiladas, Quesadillas & Burritos. The decor might need to be worked on a little bit because I don’t understand why there’s an inflatable plane hanging above one of the tables. Once seated you’ll be served some of their fresh Tortilla Chips and Homemade Salsa.

This Salsa is not for the weak as you can see the Pepper Flakes in the picture. The Nachos appetizer is topped with Cheese, Mexican Crema (Sour Cream), Fresh Refried Beans and Pico de Gallo (the good stuff). They’re piled up in mountain form but don’t despair, all the toppings minus the Pico de Gallo are layered throughout.

Tacos are 3 for $5 so I had the Chorizo, Chicken and Cochinita Pibil tacos.

Trio of Tacos

Of the 3, my least favorite was the Chorizo but that’s not to say that it’s bad. The Cochinita Pibil which is Slow Roasted Pork was my favorite. There are also Desserts on the menu which I didn’t get to and Breakfast is served as well (they open at 9am). Jacalito is going to be added to my regular rotation, as a matter of fact I’m going there again for lunch tomorrow.

Gator Burger At The Pit BarBQ In Miami, Florida

The Pit Bar-B-Q is a Historical landmark. Hey, I didn’t know that but it says it right on their menu. The Pit stands out on a long stretch of 8th Street with nothing on either side of it. You can either sit inside (it’s not too big) or outside under their Tiki-like canopy. Regardless of where you might sit, the unmistakable smell of BBQ is everywhere.

The one thing that struck me was the amount of Cuban dishes on the “Pit Starters” menu. There’s Masitas de Puerco (Fried Pork Chunks), Fried Yuca con Mojo (Cassava), Tostones (Fried Green Plantains) & Maduros (Fried Sweet Plantains). You can order individual or family size portions but I was here for one thing, the Famous “Gator Burger”.

On the menu, the translation is “Hamburguesa de Cocodrilo” which would be Crocodile Burger. I can see why they went with the Gator Burger name. The server suggests I add cheese because the gator meat can be a little dry.

While I didn’t find it to be dry, it did seem to have a little bit of heat mixed into it. The flavor of the burger can be best described as Chicken, just kidding. It actually tastes like a spiced up Turkey Burger. The American Cheese was really a non-factor but the smoke (since it was cooked in their wood burning pit bbq) was present throughout the taste of the burger. I can’t say that I was enamored with it nor longing to have another one. If you ever find yourself on the side of the road on 8th Street and need a Gator fix, then this might be the place for you.

Bennigan’s In Miami, Florida

We were greeted with a ferocious dirty ass smell. I’m not kidding it was bad. It smelled as if we were in the middle of a badly kept public restroom. Once we stepped foot into Bennigan’s we felt as if we were in some bizarro world. Once upon time, Bennigan’s was up there in popularity with T.G.I. Friday’s and Chili’s. It fell from grace big time and bad time. As a matter of fact, last time I ate at Bennigan’s about 2 years ago I was served raw chicken tenders.

Why would I return? I was hoping for a brand new Bennigan’s. They had gone out of business and were gradually re-opening the old locations with what I thought was a new menu. I also missed their Monte Cristo sandwich. The Monte Cristo is a Ham, Turkey, Swiss and American Cheese Sandwich on Wheat Bread, battered, deep fried and then dusted with Powdered Sugar. If that wasn’t enough it’s served with a side of Raspberry jam for dipping. It was also one of those sandwiches that was so rich, it became a task to eat the entire thing because the taste, although good would become repugnant.

The other thing we noticed after we walked in was the good majority of the employees could easily be cast in a C level movie as an Igor. As we sit down, the first thing out of my friend Ed’s mouth is, “This was a bad idea”. The worse our meal got, the more miserable Ed became and the more I would laugh.

So Fritz comes to take our drink order. He mentions the soft drinks available are Pepsi, Lemonade, & Raspberry Iced Tea. I order the Lemonade and Ed asks for the Raspberry Iced Tea. “I’m sorry we’re out of Raspberry Iced Tea.” Ed just looks over at me and I can’t help but laugh. He decides to also enjoy a refreshing Lemonade, the best thing on the menu. Why offer a drink and then say immediately they’re out of it, so weird.

While he is deciding whether he should order a soup I order an appetizer sampler plate that includes Quesadillas, Southwestern Egg Rolls and Potato Skins. He decides on their Baked Potato Soup (something I believe they were known for in the past)…..a swing and a miss. “I’m sorry we’re not serving the Baked Potato Soup yet.” We decided to not  ask what “yet” meant and he orders the French Onion Soup.

We make the executive decision to split 2 dishes so we get their Mini Burgers and a Monte Cristo both with fries. The French Onion Soup and the appetizer platter is served at the same time. For one second there we thought everything was going to be OK. All 3 apps were just the average everyday appetizers. The only one that looked kind of weird was the Potato Skins which looked almost like hollowed out coconuts.

French Onion Soup

An old cracker amongst us!

As I’m tasting the platter, Ed is taking his first slurps of the soup. His explanation of the soup was “dirty salty water”. The best part was, there was no bread in the soup. It had some old crackers floating on the salty substance. How do I know they were old? He begged me to taste it after I refused multiple times. Trust me, they were old.

Ed begins to eat the appetizers and proceeds to try and sell me on how great they are. I am now convinced that soup damaged his taste buds. By the time the Mini Burgers and the Monte Cristo arrive I’m trying to decide whether to try them or just call it a day and take them to go. Both dishes had an odd flavor we could not pinpoint.

Monte Cristo

Mini Burgers

They were both way off and I have a sneaking suspicion it had to do with the freshness of the food. I also remember the fries being different with some seasoning on them but now they were just the plain regular fries with not much flavor.

I had a good time at Bennigan’s, but not because the food was good or the service was extraordinary. No, it was because Ed’s experience was worse than mine and sometimes, that’s good enough for me. Oh yeah, don’t eat at Bennigan’s.
