Zesto – Atlanta, Georgia

Posted by: | Comments (0)

After our experience at Flip Burger Boutique we headed to Zesto but not before we dropped off  our friend who needed to recover after eating at two other places consecutively. John and I stepped into a rather retro looking place with the atmosphere to match. We’re looking over the menu and trying to decide what to eat. We agree to split everything we order.

All Wrapped Up

I order a footlong chili dog, onion rings, fries, a cheeseburger and a Chubby Decker. John looks over to me and asks, now why would you order 2 burgers? My reply was, You don’t come to the house of the Chubby Decker and not get one! We sit down and take a pic of everything before the xmas unwrapping begins.

Chubby Decker

Crinkle Cut Fries

After trying everything I come to one conclusion, it’s all just average tasting. The burgers (including the Chubby Decker) taste like fast food burgers I’ve had before but I just can’t seem to pinpoint the flavor. The fries are crinkle cut and good for what they are, frozen fries. The onion rings, although appearing to be fresh lacked any flavor.

Onion Rings

Footlong Chili Dog

You know what? After thinking about it the only thing I really liked was the footlong chili dog. The chili is more like ground beef with some seasoning which I don’t mind too much. Tasty! By the end of this, John and I were done, or so we thought. We remember, the Vortex was going to be our last stop tonight. Time to rest up.

If I could go back in time I would have changed my order. What was I thinking? First thing is first. Let me give you a little background on Flip Burger Boutique. I was originally under the illusion that Richard Blais from Top Chef was the owner of Flip. I have come to find out his company is a consultant on Flip and that he is the “Creative Director”. Either way, being a fan of Richard Blais(because of Top Chef)was the draw for me here.

My friend John and I walk into Flip and it’s busy. We give our name and wait, which unfortunately gives us an opportunity to dissect the place. We’re looking around and in all honesty, if a bomb landed on this place, I don’t think anyone would be missed. Am I being too harsh? Some dude walked in with green Crocs and a red turtle neck, enough said.

We’re seated and I’m excited because I’ve heard about their Krispy Kreme Milkshakes. I order a Krispy Kreme Milkshake while John (trying to be different) orders the Nutella + Burnt Marshmallow Milkshake. The shakes are good and when they’re served it looks like some liquid nitrogen is put into play as the cups are smoking.

Shakes

John goes for what seems to be the safe bet and orders the Flip Burger. I should interject that their patties are 5.5 ounces and a mix of hanger steak, brisket and short rib. The Flip Burger includes onion, lettuce, tomato, home made pickles and FLIP sauce.

Flip Burger

I decide to go with the Kobe Burger with American Kobe beef, seared foie gras (it’s duck liver in case you didn’t know), shaved truffles (rare mushroom), b&b pickles and red wine syrup. I figured I’ve seen enough foie gras on Top Chef and No Reservations (Anthony Bourdain’s show not the horrible movie) to be convinced I must try this. John takes a bite of his and doesn’t like it. So I dig in literally, my burger taste like a mummy from an excavation. Me no likey.

Flip Kobe Burger

John take another bite, says he’s done, that he’s not eating anymore. I take the bun off and take a look at my burger once again before biting in a second time. Wow, this is probably the worst thing I have ever tasted. I’m not lying. I repeat, not worst burger, but worst tasting food ever placed in my mouth. I try John’s burger and I don’t like it either. The fries and onion rings were awesome.

I take off the top bun one last time and look down at my burger and I just can’t do it. I can’t bring myself to take another bite. John asks for the bill and we leave. On the car drive out of there, he tells me that every time I lifted my top bun, he felt the horrible smell slap him in the face. I wish someone had slapped me in the face when I decided to order that.

OK Cafe – Atlanta, Georgia

Posted by: | Comments (4)

OK Cafe has a very cool vibe to it. The minute we walked in I knew I’d like the place. We were seated under a giant money tree which has some creepy green dude hanging off of it. Looking through the menu I had already decided I was definitely going to go with the Bacon Cheeseburger with Cheddar cheese and a basket of Shaved Fried Onions. My 2 friends take the breakfast route, after all it is 9am.

Isaac Breakfast

John Breakfast

Isaac goes with 2 eggs over easy, sausage (which look like hockey pucks), toast and grits. John also has 2 eggs over easy with bacon, home fries and toast. Both of them love their breakfast. John raves about his bacon, which he lets me try. I am now raving about his bacon. We all thought the bacon was outstanding which is great because it’s on my burger.

Bacon Cheeseburger

The burger was great, the bun was tasty and the fries were good. The outstanding item I ordered was the basket of Shaved Fried Onions. Something really great was going in the seasoning of the onions.

Shaved Onions

On the way out or way in (depends I guess when you notice it) there’s a wall with caricatures of employees that have been with them for over 10 years.

OK Cafe Hall of Fame Wall

And for those who don’t want to make the wait, there’s an area of freshly prepared food to go. The back of their menu proclaims no preservatives, fresh vegetables and hormone free meat. The quality is noticeable but my biggest regret was that I never ordered their mac n’ cheese. I think I may have been pushing the limits of breakfast if I had ordered that.

I had seen MiamiDon‘s Seven Burgers post at the Roadfood site and it inspired me to check out a few of the places. One of those being, Shorty’s which I have not eaten at in a good 7 to 8 years. I’m not a fan of ribs but it seems that this is what you should get when you come to Shorty’s. By the time my wife Marcela and I arrive, my bud Ed is already at the table and as usual my sister Michelle is a bit late. I go appetizer crazy and convince everyone to order Cheese Fries, Onion Rings, Wings, Mac n Cheese and Marcela gets a corn on the cob. By the time the appetizers are served, Michelle arrives and we pretend to not notice her going to town on the fries and onion rings. Nothing too memorable here except for the sauce at the table which tastes like the crud I clean off of my BBQ grill at home (for the record I have never tasted that crud). I take the comment about nothing too memorable back, Marcela really liked her corn. Ed orders a full slab of baby backs, Michelle orders a combo platter with baby back ribs and spare ribs and I get the Big Shorty’s Cheeseburger. Ed allows me to try his ribs and they’re pretty good, Michelle allows me to try her Spare Ribs and I could definitely live without that. I am now not a fan of spare ribs, and she didn’t seem to like them too much either. Ed likes his ribs though. As for my burger, well it wasn’t bad, it was ok. I would definitely take a pass on ordering this again if I ever come back here. We also ordered a Hot Apple Cobbler which was more like a lukewarm apple pie with ice cream. Marcela and Ed love it, I don’t get it and I might be better off that way.

Welcome To Cheeseburger Baby

Cheeseburger Baby is my wife’s favorite burger joint. She swears by this place. And as far as Miami is concerned, it’s the Burger Icon on South Beach having just turned 10 years old. If you’re needing a burger fix at 3AM on a Wednesday then this is your go to place.

Whenever we’re here my wife always like to start out with an order of onion rings. They’re not homemade but they do the job plus they have a nice seasoning on them. Now, the Chili Cheese Fries are a whole other thing. These fellas are highly addictive. Yes, they’re beans in this chili but that doesn’t stop this BB machine and if you’re up to it, add some jalapeños. And I love their melting technique which I guess you’ll just have to see in person.

Chili Cheese Fries

Since I love the chili it only stands to reason I’d also try the Chili Cheese Dog. The picture is a little misleading. Once you close up that bun, you’re fighting to keep everything inside. Again, I’d suggest adding jalapeños to the mix even though I’ve never had it that way. Tell me all about how great it is that way in the comments below.

Chili Cheese Dog

One of the things as of late that I’m obsessed over is the sear on the outside of a burger patty. I was watching a master at work cause my burger had one of the most beautiful sears I’ve seen. It was cooked a perfect medium and that bacon was so crunchy and delicious it belongs in a breakfast sandwich.

1/2 Pound Bacon Cheese Burger

Cheeseburger Baby has a great burger which is why they’ve outlasted all these pretenders opening up near them and trying to steal their thunder. And if you haven’t had them, you should be ashamed cause after 10 years they’re still doing it the right way, their way.

Fatburger – Miami Beach, Florida

Posted by: | Comments (6)

There is a Fatburger on South Beach and when my wife shops at a particular cosmetics store near there it means that I end up with Fatburger for dinner.

Decisions....decisions....

From time to time we’ll also eat at the actual Fatburger location. While I decide to go with the Kingburger (1/2 lb. burger), my wife has the Fatburger (1/3 lb. burger) .

The toppings I added to my Kingburger were Cheese, Ketchup and Mayo. Why those toppings? This is a great fast food burger and that’s the holy trinity of fast food condiments.  Very reminiscent of Gabe’s Burgers (long gone but not forgotten by me at least) as I recall they had three locations: one on Bird Road across from Bird Bowl, one near the Miami International Airport and the other near the B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s original location in Hialeah on 49th st.

Their big deal though is that they have a Turkey Burger. I did not try it though it’s not something I’m against eating. I prefer the real deal as I’m not calorie counting if I’m eating here. The Onion Rings here are very good and recommended as well are the Fat Fries. I ordered the Chili Cheese Fat Fries which I thought was great but my wife did not seem to share my enthusiasm.

Strawberry Shake

She did love their “Real Ice Cream” Chocolate Shake. Since she loves Ice Cream, it may be something you want to try also. This time though she ordered the “Real Ice Cream” Strawberry Shake and she was less than enamored.

Kingdom – Miami, Florida

Posted by: | Comments (19)

Due to an overwhelming amount of emails proclaiming the greatness of Kingdom, I felt I should go check the place out. The parking is a bit of a nightmare and if you do go down into that neighborhood it would be a good idea to not get lost. The place is not very big but it’s got a charm about it with some seats inside and tables set up on the outside (in an enclosure). Let’s see what to get…I check out their menu and look for the burgers first. I come across a Fries/Onion Rings combo as an appetizer.

Onion Rings & Fries

My friend orders it. The Fries are crinkle cut and not bad. The Onion Rings were better and both were topped with some seasoning which gave them a nice flavor. My wife and I decide we should also get some wings. You can get them tossed in either BBQ, Honey Mustard or Buffalo Sauce (the bartender may have said another flavor but I can’t recall).

Wings tossed in Frank's Red Hot

We get the Buffalo version (tastes like Frank’s Red Hot to me) and love ‘um. Those things were hot, and by hot I mean temperature hot. In the pic above you should be able to see some smoke rising from them.

Chicken Burger

My pal orders the Chicken Burger. The Chicken Burger is ground Chicken packed into Burger form no dead chickens were harmed though). She loved it, Marcela loved it and I……you got it, loved it! She added Provolone Cheese and Bacon to it. How could you go wrong with Bacon? There are 3 burgers on the Kingdom menu: Queen (8 oz.), King (12 oz.) and Doomsday (24 oz.).

King Burger

If you can eat the Doomsday Burger in under 15 minutes you don’t have to pay for it. As tempting a proposition as that sounds if I was served a Doomsday Burger at the temperature they served the King Burger at , I would have no palate left. That Burger was smoking hot. I ordered my King Burger with Cheddar and a heaping load of crispy Bacon. It was remarkably delicious. I suggest you get over here and try one of their burgers cause there’s a new King in town.

I remember being in 5th grade and jealous of other kids who had t-shirts proving that they had been to the Hard Rock in New York or in Chicago. In all honesty, I didn’t even know what it was but I knew I needed to own one of those shirts. Then one summer I went to Los Angeles and my aunt mentioned that the Hard Rock located there was not far from her house. I knew that if I didn’t go there before I left I would not have had a complete trip. On that day, it started my trend of trying to get my hands on as much merchandise as possible from different Hard Rock Cafe locations.

Before there was a location in Miami, I used to try to convince anyone I could to drive up with me to the Hard Rock next to Universal Studios in Orlando. And finally, when the Miami location in Bayside finally opened up I, along with a few of my friends waited in line at the grand opening.  Just so we could eat there on it’s first day (well over 2 hour wait). I’m not necessarily proud of that last fact.

Most of my obsession came from the branding of the place and the logo. Never really the food, which I’ve always thought is second fiddle to their massive marketing machine. They always hype how good their burgers are, but are they really? Now Bayside is not a place I frequent. From the looks of the Hard Rock Cafe there, I’m not the only one with that philosophy. There were only 6 other customers in the place at dinner time and we were definitely outnumbered by the staff who I must mention were really cool. I’m sure most people who want to eat at the Hard Rock go to the hipper Hard Rock Seminole in Hollywood. I don’t blame them. This place seems to be dying a slow death, kinda like Chinese Democracy. So onto the food.

Jumbo Combo Appetizer

I figured it would be easier to sample most of their appetizers via the Jumbo Combo: Santa Fe Spring Rolls, Tupelo Chicken Tenders, Hickory Smoked Chicken Wings (served Heavy Metal style), Onion Rings & Potato Skins.

The Sante Fe Spring Rolls were just a run of the mill Southwestern Egg Roll. The Tupelo Chicken Tenders were good and moist but are really no match for the Crunch Chicken from Planet Hollywood.  The Wings, Onion rings and Potato Skins were the usual fare, nothing special.

I ordered the Red, White & Blue Burger : “10 oz. Patty laced and grilled with Spicy Buffalo Sauce and Cajun seasoning, then topped with crumbled Blue Cheese and a Crisp Fried Onion Ring.

Red White & Blue Burger

I had not tried a burger that tasted like this before. In some ways, the flavors almost resemble a Cuban Frita but significantly spicier. It was a nice surprise but I can’t get over the fact this is a frozen burger.
