Jahn’s Ice Cream Parlour In Jackson Heights, New York

Jahn's Outside

With its wood grain panels and dodgeball sized lights lining the wall, Jahn’s really sets the mood for an old school ice cream shop. I felt as if I were on the set of a Back To The Future film (I mean this in a good way). Jahn’s food can be best described as Diner Food. We arrived near 10PM and while everyone in my party decided to have some sort of dessert, I had a Vanilla Shake.

Jahn’s BBQ Burger

And of course, a Burger. Their BBQ Burger has American Cheese on the bottom and top bun (at least mine did), BBQ Sauce, Bacon and a couple of Onion Rings. This is your standard Diner Burger. It will satisfy your late night Burger cravings, at least it did for me. As a late night plus they have an extensive dessert menu to look through.

Xtreme Eatery Formerly Known As Heart Stoppers Sports Grill In Delray Beach, Florida

The front of their menu says “Over consumption of our food will definitely lead to obesity, at which point you should consult a physician before starting an exercise program.” At least they’re upfront about it.

Heart Stoppers Sports Grill has a hospital theme (hospital gear everywhere, waitresses dressed as scantily clad nurses). Yes, we’ve seen something similar before but there are a whole bunch of clever ideas throughout which I really liked. I was with my friend Erik and we ordered a few appetizers or as their menu refers to them, Artery Cloggers. We had the Chili Chest Pain Fries (love this name), Sweet Potato Fries (with a Marshmallow dipping sauce) and the Brewzed and Battered Onion Rings. The Fries were crispy, the Chili was tasty and we both liked them. Erik isn’t a big fan of Chili and he was digging them.

Chili Cheese Fries

The Sweet Potato Fries were fresh cut and we loved them.

Sweet Potato Fries

The Onion Rings were great as was the dipping sauce (some Mayo mix with spice).

Onion Strings

I forgot to mention the Chili Chest Pain Fries and the Brewzed and Battered Onion Rings were served in bed pans.

Artery Cloggers come in Bed Pans

So, what else did we get? We decided to share (something I don’t do often) The Heart Attacker (a 1/2 pound Burger) and the 1/2 lb. Ripper (a big time 14 inch long dog, Hebrew National by the way). The main reason I don’t like to share is I end up having to negotiate for toppings.

14 Inch Ripper

We ordered The Ripper naked because we couldn’t come to an agreement.  The rest went rather smoothly. We agreed upon Mayo, Cheddar Cheese, Bacon and an Egg for the Heart Attacker. All the toppings on the Heart Attacker including the bun (which was lightly toasted with a little bit of butter) were spot on. It was good, better than good and I look forward to trying their Triple A (1/2 lb stuffed with cheese). I forgot to mention that there are 30 toppings that can be added to your burger at no extra charge.

The Heart Attacker

I just remembered we had also ordered 10 “Killer Wings”. The Flatliner Wings were tasty and had some good heat.

Killer Wings

The Ripper was probably the best thing I had and I only added mustard to it. Finally when our bill came we were surprised to be given a first aid box until we looked inside.

Looky Looky

I found eating at Heart Stoppers an enjoyable experience.

The Heart Stopper Challenge:

Wall Of Fame

Want to get your pic on the Wall of Fame at Heart Stoppers in Delray Beach? You can enter The Heart Stopper Challenge at anytime. All you have to do is eat their 3lb Burger & Fries and beat the best existing time. You’ll replace the current champ on the wall, if not your picture may end up in their City Morgue. When we were about to leave 2 guys were doing the Heart Stopper Challenge.

The Challengers

It’s really a spectacle when they wheel out the burgers on a cart attached to an IV bag. The table you sit at has a giant light (operating room style) on you with a defibrillator right next to you (and you have the option to sit in a wheelchair). I honestly don’t know if those guys completed the challenge but there was another guy lining up to go next. A friend of mine was there the next day and mentioned that someone had just taken over the new record. It now stands at 31 minutes. Good luck to everyone who tries it.

Swensen’s Ice Cream Parlor And Restaurant In Coral Gables, Florida

Swensons Sign

Swensen’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant has been around forever. I remember my parents bringing me here as a kid for Ice Cream after dinner. Now, I’ve never really been a big Ice Cream fan but every once in a while I’ll have the urge to eat some. My wife Marcela on the other hand is an “Ice Cream Deviant”. No ice cream is safe in our house. My pal Jarce and I originally wanted to eat at the new Five Guys location that had just opened but when we drove by it was ridiculously packed. We were less than one block away from Swensen’s. It had been a while since I had eaten at Swensen’s. As a matter of fact, Marcela and my obsession for Frank’s Red Hot Sauce can be attributed to Swensen’s. It was here that we fell in love with the Hot Sauce they were using. The waitress told us it was Frank’s Red Hot. We had never heard of it but now we can’t live without it (that’s a bit of a stretch) . Alright, getting back to the story at hand, Swensen’s now has some new Burgers on the menu. Jarce orders the BBQ Burger (he’s a big time BBQ sauce ho) and I decide to try the Horseradish Burger. We also order their Appetizer Platter. One thing I’ve never understood about some restaurants and their “Appetizer Platters” is the weird quantities of food.

The Apps

The Apps

This platter had 4 Chicken Wings, 3 Mozzarella Sticks, 2 Chicken Tenders and 5 Onion Rings. I felt as if we were playing Fantasy Baseball, we’re trading items with each other. “Ok, I’ll eat the Onion Rings and you’ll have more Chicken Wings.” Everything on the platter was pretty standard stuff with the exception of the Wings. The Wings were nice and crispy and of course they were served with Frank’s Red Hot. Jarce loved his BBQ Burger. It had a couple of Onion Rings, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese and was topped with BBQ Sauce.

He was so in love with the BBQ Sauce that at one point he was using it as lip gloss (I was kidding, just in case someone believes that).

Horseradish Burger

Horseradish Burger

The Horseradish Burger had Monterey Jack Cheese & Scallions. Their homemade Horseradish Sauce was a pleasant surprise. I’ve had Burgers here before and they didn’t taste like that. The Burger was better than an Ice Cream Parlor has any business serving. We didn’t make it to Dessert but then again, Marcela wasn’t with us this time.

Cheeburger Cheeburger – Naples, Florida

Cheeburger Cheeburger Door

There was no doubt when I convinced everyone to eat at Cheeburger Cheeburger that my intentions were anything other than eating their Famous Pounder. We had a lot of fun at Cheeburger Cheeburger. How could we not? My Parents, my wife Marcela, my cousin Fred and my friend Yislin were all along for the ride this time.

Outside of Cheeburger Cheeburger

I really think we drove the waitress crazy with the amount of food that was ordered. They weren’t really prepared for it but handled it well. When we walked in there was no one here. Once seated, it sounded like a dozen people talking not 6 (I guess that’s the Miami way). We had a couple of orders of their Fries/Onion rings to start with. The Fries and O-rings are made daily and fried in Peanut Oil (a double awesome). Nothing is better with Fries and Onion Rings than sauces (well at least I think so). All 5 sauces, order up: Cheese, Horseradish, Jalapeno,Sweet Popper and Garden Vegetable. I love the fries and onion rings here and with the added feature of sauces it’s a win.

Yislin, because she’s a pain gets the Grilled Chicken Melt (Chicken version of a Patty Melt). My mother for some reason orders Chicken Strips while my father and Marcela order The Semi-Serious (1/3 pound). Fred and I of course go for the Famous Pounder. How else are we going to get our picture on the wall?

I tried my friend’s Chicken Melt and thought it was good (but I’ll stick to their burgers). My Mom’s Chicken Strips were of the bagged variety (I still don’t know why she ordered this). Our burgers were great. Oh, did I forget to mention we had bacon on it also? The one thing about Cheeburger Cheeburger that I’ve found is that quite a few people who swear by this place while I also encounter those who tell me they would never go back. I like Cheeburger Cheeburger and used to eat at it regularly when there was a location in Kendall. So how did we do with the pounder? Fred is an eating machine but a slow eating machine. I eat much quicker than he does. Are we on the wall?

Champions Sports Bar At The Marriott Hotel In Miami, Florida

My friend Ed told me about Champions Sports Bar a few weeks ago. He had heard some blurb about it on sports radio. My friend Luis was in town from Los Angeles, so my wife Marcela and I decided to take him with us to check the place out. Champions Sports Bar is located inside of the Marriott Hotel right by the Miami International Airport.

We ordered the Champions Sampler Tower ( 2 Dozen Wings, 8 Beef and Cheddar Sliders, Fully Loaded Cheese Fries and Onion Rings).

Luis seemed to like everything but in particular eating all the Cheese and Bacon off the fries, that mother f’er. Marcela liked the Cheese Fries the best as did I. It tasted like there was Parmesan Cheese on the Fries, pretty good addition if you ask me. The Wings and Onion Rings were pretty standard stuff as were the Sliders. The Sliders being average only meant one thing to me, that the regular Burger was either going to be Average or Really Bad. Luis orders the Miami Dog (foot long, half pound Hot Dog with Sauteed Onions, Chili, Mushrooms, Cheddar, Sauerkraut & Yellow Mustard), I order the Blue Cheese and Onions Burger and Marcela decides to quit while she’s ahead.

Miami Dog

By far, the Miami Dog was way better than the Blue Cheese and Onion Burger. Not the best Dog I’ve ever tried as the server claimed, he must not get out much. Luis seemed to love the Chili which really irked me because I drove him to Arbetter’s to try the chili and he claimed this Chili was better. I really think he was pulling my chain on this one.

Champions Blue Burger

Champion Blue Open Faced

The menu says “fresh Angus Burger” but I don’t buy it. It certainly did not taste that way, it was an average tasting Burger too. Plus I had spoken too soon, Marcela and Luis decide to order the Brownie Sundae.

Brownie

Brownie Sundae

I’m not a Brownie fanatic but I can tell when something isn’t fresh. It was served room temperature with Hot Fudge and Vanilla Ice Cream. It was an average affair just like everything else which is is a shame because the place seemed to have potential.

Burger And Beer Joint In Miami Beach, Florida

Beer and Burger Joint is a Rock n’ Roll Burgerhouse. It’ll remind you of a steakhouse but with great music playing (always a plus). Before I get started on why it is imperative that visit Burger & Beer Joint, you must also bring a group and experience the The Mother Burger. The picture below should say it all:

Mother Burger getting the Saw treatment

I order the Crispy Dill Pickles again because it’s a must try for anyone who comes here. I don’t eat pickles but I love these Pickles.

Crispy Dill Pickles

We also order the Mini Corn Dogs and the Onion Rings. The Mini Corn Dogs are Hebrew National Mini Dogs dipped in corn meal served with a deli mustard.

Great Corn Dogs and awesome Mustard. The Onion Rings are GIANT ( see for yourself in the picture below) and dusted lightly with seasoning. They’re served with a Jalapeño Cheese Dipping Sauce. Nice, crispy and great.

I convince my sister Michelle to order the Sympathy for the Devil while I order the Mustang Sally which I’ve heard good things about.

Mustang Sally

The Mustang Sally which has Prosciutto and Brie cheese is a Godsend. This guy was stupendous. And if Mustang Sally was from the heavens then Sympathy For The Devil is straight from hell.

Sympathy for the Devil Burger

Packing some good heat and topped with Jalapeños, B&B’s Buffalo Chili as well as a Habanero Sauce this burger has me grasping for a way to describe its flavor. I was blown away by it and highly recommend it.

Charm City Burger Company In Deerfield Beach, Florida

Charm City Burger Company is a good hour from where I live in Miami. I originally checked them out when I happened to be in Sunrise one day and convinced a friend of mine to make the extra 20 minute or so drive from there to Charm City Burger Company. There is a front door but I always enter through the back door (please save the jokes for another time).

Couple of cool things to start with: 1) They serve Fountain Coke & Mexican Coke (believe it or not this is very important to me 2) Awesome mural, reminds me of McDonaldland for some reason

Wall Mural

and 3) Something cool is always playing on the TV, on the this occasion, Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods. Also, they recently underwent a renovation that expanded the seating a bit and made service function much smoother and added some craft beers on draft too.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you look over the menu for the first time. Most folks can’t seem to decide, so they end up ordering either of the 2 first burgers on the menu (Good Ole: Straight up regular burger with or without Cheese or Cowboy Style: Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Mushrooms & Onions). My original inclination on my first visit was to get The Big Sloppy and I did. The Big Sloppy, besides being a great name for a professional wrestler is Double Meat, Double Cheese, Double Bacon, Hash Brown and a Fried Egg. Only order if you are hungry, if not you will end up stuffed.

The Big Sloppy

Sides include Tater Tots (someone who is longing for his grade school days usually orders these), Beer Battered Onion Rings (what a real man orders) and Hand Cut Fries. Everyone knows that Hand Cut Fries are just what the doctor ordered.

For the experienced Charm City eater you know that the Emperor is the way to go. The Emperor is an American Kobe Patty Melt with Sauteed Mushrooms, Cave Aged Gruyere Cheese and Truffled Aioli. If you’re a little more adventurous you can add Foie Gras to it. We asked for our burgers to be cooked Under (their lingo is a little different), and that’s just what we got. Take a look at the beautiful Emperor, he should be in a Burger Museum.

The Emperor

You must pace yourself because there is plenty of good eats to be found here and multiple visits or one with a bunch of friends is really the only way to try out everything effectively.

On the menu, it says “Garlic Herb Marinated , Slow Roasted and Flash Fried” about the wings, as my father would say “I believe it” . While writing this, my mouth is beginning to water (no joke). The Mahogany Soy although good was bested by the Volcano which I liked best out of the 3 (the other being Smokey BBQ). The meat was practically falling off the bone.

Smokey BBQ Wings

One of the newest additions is my friend the All Natural Hot Dog. The Hot Dog can be ordered up Grilled or Ripper style (Deep Fried) with an option of making it “Dirty”. Dirty means you’ll get Bacon, Cheese and Onions and it’s a great choice if you like a loaded up dog.

Hot Dog served up Dirty

If your palate loves spicy then you might want to try out the Volcano Style Burger (Pepper Jack Cheese, Volcano Sauce and Jalapeños) or El Diablo Chicken Sandwich (Grilled or Country Buttermilk Fried w/Volcano Sauce, Pepper Jack Cheese, Pickled Jalapeños and Garlic Sauce.

Volcano Style Burger

The Cheffy Chicken Sandwich (Candied Bacon Strips, Grilled Onions, Bleu Cheese Spread & Sweet Chili Sauce) is another must order item. The Candied Bacon Strips and Sweet Chili Sauce is just absolutely and unequivocally killer.

The Cheffy Country Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich

Most folks don’t know this but you can order a side of their Thick Cut Peppered Bacon and that would be a good move if you ask me.

Side of Bacon

And just when you think you’re done eating you’re faced with a decision, do I get a shake? The Shakes are made with Blue Bell Ice Cream and are thick, creamy and great (we’re talking shakes here). The faux Cinnamon Bun is the best, have that and you’ll be in sugar heaven but you won’t go wrong with even just the Chocolate Shake. I saw the syrup they use and I’ve been sworn to secrecy but it’s no surprise why it’s so good.

Charm City Burger Company is worth the drive. Come hungry, bring friends and whatever you do convince someone else to drive back. You’ll thank me when you’re in your food coma relaxing.
