Burger and Beer Joint To Open in Pembroke Pines This Summer

BnB Joint Pines

Looks like Burger & Beer Joint will be opening up its first Broward location in Pembroke Pines this summer 2013. You will be able to find them at 11025 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026. I’ve got no other information for you at the moment but as soon as I hear something, you’ll be the next to know. Thanks to @SFDB for the info and pic as well.

UPDATE: Still no word on what is going on with the Burger & Beer Joint Food Truck I wrote about in March.

Mojo Donuts In Pembroke Pines Has Me Under It’s Spell

Mojo Donuts

In South Florida if you want to hit up an indie Donut shop you would have needed to either drive way South to Mandarin Doughnuts (which is now closed) or Dandee Doughnuts (in Hollywood & Pompano). Good news for you donut-o-holics, Mojo Donuts just opened in Pembroke Pines with the type of Donuts that will drive you crazy.

I was excited when I walked in. The smell of Doughnuts & Coffee (no, I’m not a cop) made me float to the counter just like in a cartoon. I really don’t even remember walking after the first step.

There they were before me, calling out to me. How do I decide which to get? Who do I leave behind?

This called for a Latte break with a Log Cabin Bacon Bar & Apple Fritter chaser.

Wowsers was all I could think after having those two.

My mind was made up, “2 Dozen to Go and throw in 3 Apple & 3 Blueberry Fritters while you’re at it.” I didn’t even know what I’m going to do with all of these but I felt compelled to buy almost everything. I sent word to my people and now I’m waiting……

My peeps are here!

Now, back to my donuts so skidaddle.

The Pub In Pembroke Pines, Florida

ThePub Sign

So you’re into guys wearing kilts? Then this “Authentic British” “gastropub” is the place for you. On my way back from Sunrise my friends Ed, John and I decide to stop in for some drinks & grub. We decide to go with the Pub Wings in Buffalo Sauce, the Pub Sliders (4 of them), Tavern Chips (homemade Potato Chips with Bacon, Cheese and BBQ Sauce) & Beer Battered Onions/Mushrooms .

Pub Wings

Pub Wings

The Pub Wings were not crispy as the menu claimed but had an oven baked texture (which I don’t like for Wings). Everyone felt they were on the creepy side.

Battered Onions and Mushrooms

Battered Onions and Mushrooms

I really liked the Battered Onions and Mushrooms as well as the Horseradish Sauce served with it but everyone else just thought it average. The Tavern Chips (in particular the BBQ Sauce) were the best thing I had but everyone else hated it.

Tavern Chips

The Pub Sliders were so disliked I was the only person who finished one. They were just OK but at least the Dinner Fries were good.

John goes for the Over Easy Burger, Ed for the Sheppard’s Pie and I had the Young’s Double Chocolate Stout BBQ Burger. Both Burgers are served with a Fried Pickle.

Ed let me taste his Sheppard’s Pie and we both agreed that there was nothing special about it.

The Over Easy Burger is topped with Pepper Jack Cheese and an Over Easy Egg. I never got to try it but John seemed to think it was lacking something in the taste department.

As for the Young’s Double Chocolate Stout BBQ Burger, the only flavor that didn’t make an appearance was the Burger itself. The Burger was topped with Bacon, Guinness Onions, a Chocolate Stout BBQ Sauce and some Cheddar Cheese.

The toppings, in particular the Guinness Onions and the Chocolate Stout BBQ Sauce had a nice flavor. We stayed for quite a while having drinks afterwards. I like the atmosphere in the place and the beer on tap was good too.

Anyway, how can a place that serves Coke in a glass bottle be all that bad?

Brimstone In Pembroke Pines, Florida

I’ve passed Brimstone many a time on my way to Sunrise and wondered what exactly it was. It certainly looks like a chain restaurant (which it’s not) from I-75. My friend Ed and I decided to go in and see what this place is all about. Prior to the visit I had looked up Brimstone online and confirmed that they indeed did have a hamburger as well as some mini burgers. I arrive first and had not realized that this is definitely much more upscale than I originally thought. It has an amazing wood burning smell (not the kind where a forest is burning down before someone makes a wisecrack). I’m seated far away from everyone (just kidding no one else is here). By the time Ed arrives, I had ordered a beer and a couple of appetizers (BBQ Chicken Flatbread with a thin whole wheat crust and the Kobe Mini Cheeseburgers).

BBQ Chicken Flatbread

Kobe Mini Burgers

I felt the flat bread was ok as did Ed. Now, the Kobe Mini Cheeseburgers were outstanding as were the seasoned dinner fries that came with them (as good as frozen fries can be). Cooked to medium, these little guys were juicy, and not be anti climatic they were also the best thing we had here. I ordered the Brimstone Prime Burger (with Bacon and Cheese) and Ed had the Tenderloin Steak Sandwich (comes with mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, bacon & fried onions).

Salt Crusted Baked Potato

The prime burger was nothing I haven’t had before. Considering it was wood grilled, the cooking technique didn’t carry over into the taste of the burger, great fries though (deserved a second mention). I also ordered the Salt Crusted Baked Potato, which looks a lot better than it was.

Tenderloin Steak Sandwich

Ed’s steakwich was a bigger letdown considering the ingredients. You should have had an explosion of flavor when you bit into it, which was not the case. You are better off getting a Pan Con Bistec at Morro Castle. The best thing on his plate was the horseradish sauce, which turned out to be perfect for dipping the fries. And if you ever watched The State, it may have been good to dip something else in it.

Rickey’s in Pembroke Pines, Florida

Years ago I bought a gigantic jug of Rickey’s World Famous Hot Sauce not knowing anything about the restaurant affiliated with it or that’s it’s owner is considered the greatest classic arcade game player of all time. If you’ve watched the film The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters as many times as I have, you may also develop an unhealthy obsession with whoever is the reigning Donkey Kong champ. Rickey’s is owned by Billy Mitchell, former, present who knows at this point…Donkey Kong champ and it’s the reason I decided to drive to Rickey’s Restaurant & Lounge .

Quesadillas

We started with some “Apps” , so we got Potato Skins (pretty standard stuff topped with Cheese, Bacon, Sour Cream and Scallions) , Loaded Large French Fries (kinda overkill since this would be our second potato app) but the fries were topped with Chili, Cheese and Bacon, Quesadillas (nothing special),Chicken Strips w/fries (I know, we’re out of control) and 10 pieces of their Original Wings. We ordered them “Naked” aka sans breading served with their famous sauce (of which you can choose from Mild, Medium, Hot, Garlic, Jalapeño or Habanero).

Rickey’s Double Bacon Cheeseburger

The wings were prettay, prettay good but the sauce hit the spot. I would like to comment that my weak willed friend made us eat Medium, when we normally would have gone for the Jalapeño sauce. Now for the main event, I got the Bacon Double Cheeseburger (2 patties, 1/3 lb. each with Bacon and Cheese served with fries) and it was really nothing out of the ordinary.

The service was really great and when I inquired about Billy Mitchell from our server, he did mention he was back in his office. So I purchased a bottle of Rickey’s World Famous Hot Sauce, and asked if I could get Billy’s autograph on it. He left with the bottle and came back with this on it: “Remember Always Play To Win, Always – Billy Mitchell“.
