You Know What’s Really Good: The Philly Cheesesteak At Andiamo In Miami, Florida

Andiamo Sign

Andiamo! is known for their Pizza but what most folks don’t know about or have never tried is their Philly Cheesesteak. The Philly is served on Italian bread with Cheese under the Ribeye (the way it should be). I would definitely suggest you get Grilled Onions & Hot Cherry Peppers (if you can handle the heat). (this dish no longer available at Andiamo! only at their sister restaurant down the street, Dogma Grill)

You could also go the Pizza Steak route (the Philly with Provolone, Marinara Sauce & Oregano) but I wouldn’t. Safe space for their Pizza instead.

Mariella Pizza In New York, New York

Mariella Pizza

There are hundreds of choices for Pizza in New York so why Mariella Pizza? My friend Carlos who is always on the search for a great slice brought me here. He believes this one of the best in the city. I’m not sure that I could argue that point. I didn’t really have another slice on this trip to compare it but I can’t imagine anything better than their cheese slice. I tried the Sicilian and the White but that Cheese Slice was a thing of perfection. So much so that my wife and I took some slices home to Miami. I know, we’re ridiculous.

That Pizza Place On Coral Way In Miami, Florida

No one wants the take up the horrible task of following in the footsteps of a failure. That Pizza Place On Coral Way (great name by the way) has taken up this challenge and even dared to use the same phone number as its predecessor. The previous pizza parlor at this same location failed miserably with their horribly bland pizza and just as bad service. So when one guy (with the help of his brother) felt that he could hit it out of the ballpark, he had one thing in mind: Quality Ingredients.

It’s All About The Cheese!

I found out about That Pizza Place On Coral Way through a friend of mine who was raving about it. I did a search and found their website as well as their Facebook page. I decided I would have to stop in and give it a try. The pies are available in 14″, 16″ and 18″ sizes. There are also daily lunch specials. A couple of slices and a drink for $5 plus tax.  I order a slice of their regular pie and I was blown away by the nice crispy crust, the slight parmesan flavor hidden in the pizza and the right amount of sauce.

Cheese Slice

I take a look over the menu and my cousin Fred and I order some of their garlic knots, lasagna, chicken parmesan sub and meatball subs. Great stuff but the meatball sub is definitely one of the best I’ve ever had (and I know my meat).

A few days later I went back and had their pepperoni and meatball pizza. Wow, they use the small pepperoni, similar to the ones served at Frankie’s Pizza on Bird Road. Those pack a big flavor punch.

Fred went back just yesterday and had the Stromboli and loved it. There guys are doing it right and I suggest you check them out and honestly, get the meatball sub. Make sure you let them know Burger Beast sent you.

Steve’s Pizza In North Miami, Florida

Steve's Pizza Exterior

Everyone is always telling me how amazing Steve’s Pizza is. Jarce (my bud) visited Steve’s on his ill-fated attempt at a column, Late Night with Jarce on this blog. My wife Marcela and I decided to drive up to Steve’s and see what this hype was all about. There’s graffiti everywhere as if this pizza parlor was from the movie the Warriors.

Interior

Tag it up!

It adds some character to the place. They serve individual slices but I felt we should order a full pie to to make sure we weren’t getting some reheated Pizza with toppings thrown on it. I ordered half Cheese and half Pepperoni/Ground Beef. It was actually supposed to be half Pepperoni and half Pepperoni/ground Beef but I messed up so Marcela got no pep (it didn’t stop her from stealing some from my side). I ordered half a dozen Garlic Rolls and a Meatball sub.

They shout my name and the rolls are ready. The rolls were definitely the best thing we had. We housed those. Next up to bat was the Meatball Sub.

It was the same type of Meatball Sub you get at pretty much every pizza place but at least it’s better than Subway’s.

Luckily, they weren’t shy with the toppings on the Pizza. It was good but in no way was it amazing. The Pepperoni(s) had a strong taste which was nice. Semi fluffy crust not crispy for those with inquiring minds. I was expecting it to be better after everything I had heard but you know as “they” say, it is what it is.

Taurus In Coconut Grove, Florida

Taurus

My original intent was not to eat at Taurus. Since the original plan didn’t pan out I drove by Taurus to make sure it was open after what happened last time. It was and we (my wife Marcela and I)  were lucky enough to find a parking meter right near by. You can also valet park right in front of the Taurus. It’s not very big but it does have a very welcoming feel to it. It also has an outside seating area in case you need to be seen.

The menu is very limited and written on a chalk board. There are only burgers, wings and pizza available.

Taurus Menu

We decide to order the 10 oz. Burger w/Cheddar Cheese, a Pepperoni Pizza and Wings to share. The wings were crispy and good but do not come tossed in sauce.

Wings

Instead the hot sauce, blue cheese and celery are served on the side (and no extra charge for them is a plus). While my wife really liked the pizza I didn’t love it but thought it was just ok.

Pepperoni Pizza

So after re-reading Blind Mind’s post about the Taurus I realized how much he really liked the fries. Once I tasted a fry I couldn’t stop. There is truffle oil on the fries. If you’ve never eaten fries topped with truffle oil then you’re missing one of life’s great treasures.

Mr. Beautiful

The burger was cooked perfectly and tasted great but Marcela made one mistake on this day. She decided to go to the restroom and leave a piece of her half of the burger. It was just looking at me.

Well Hello There!

It was asking to be eaten, so I did. She didn’t even realize it which was perfect until she realized I ate all the leftover fries too. That’s what I get for getting greedy.

The Rock Afire Explosion And ShowBiz Pizza Place Chuck E Cheese Saga

One day when searching around google I came across some video about the “Rock-afire Explosion” After watching it I realized that “the band” seemed very familiar. They are a group of animatronic animals that play music.

The origins of this story go back to Atari founder Nolan Bushnell. When selling off Atari to Warner Bros., Bushnell decided to found a new company in 1977, Chuck E. Cheese “Pizza Time Theatre” in San Jose, CA. It was the first family restaurant of its kind. It merged food, arcade games and animatronics for entertainment. Over the course of the next few years, Chuck E. Cheese became more successful and Bushnell decided to franchise.

In 1979, Bushnell reaches an agreement with Robert Brock (who at this point was a large franchisee of Holiday Inns) to open multiple locations across the Southern and Midwestern United States. That same year Brock meets Aaron Fechter of Creative Engineering, Inc. Just a quick fact, Creative Engineering created the WhackaMole game, alright now back to the story.

Whackamole

This is very significant because Brock is so impressed with Creative Engineering’s animatronics that he asks Bushnell to release him from their agreement which he does. By the end of 1979, Robert Brock opens a competing attraction named ShowBiz Pizza Place which he co-owns with Creative Engineering, Inc (he’s actually got an 80% stake in the company).

The first ShowBiz Pizza Place location opened its doors on March 3, 1980 in Kansas City, MO. It was here that the Rock-afire Explosion band were introduced to the world.

’80s ShowBiz Ad

Of course this brings a lawsuit from Chuck E. Cheese’s company against ShowBiz Pizza in 1980 citing breach of contract with there being a counter suit citing misrepresentation. Over the course of the next few years both companies expand often near each other. In 1981, Chuck E. Cheese’s parent company goes public.

In 1982, the lawsuit is finally settled with ShowBiz Pizza required to give a portion of their profits to Chuck E. Cheese’s (approximately 50 million over the following 10 years). The next few years are extremely rough on the arcade business and Pizza Time Theatre (C.E.C.) files for Bankruptcy.

In a crazy turn of events, ShowBiz Pizza purchases Chuck E. Cheese and assumes its debt. The new company is named ShowBiz Pizza Time.

ShowBiz & Chuck E. Cheese Ad

Both restaurants continue to operate separately while there is a financial restructuring going on that eventually leads in 1988 to ShowBiz Pizza Time going public. Just a few years later in 1990, Creative Engineering severs ties with ShowBiz Pizza Time. This is at roughly the same time when the company decides to unify their characters aka “Concept Unification”.

To save on costs associated with having 2 different sets of characters and locations to market, all ShowBiz Pizzas become Chuck E. Cheese Pizza. Since all ShowBiz Pizza characters were licensed from Creative Engineering, and all Chuck E Cheese characters were owned by the new company, it’s not hard to figure out what happened here.

There are now over 500 Chuck E. Cheese locations and finally one fact I found funny. In 1997, it was officially announced that Chuck E. Cheese is a mouse and not a rat. Who knew? He stills looks a little rat-like to me. And whatever happened to the Rock-afire Explosion? They can still still be found at some locations throughout the country, which I guess is how came across them:

Lucarella’s In Oakland Park, Florida

Marcela and I are lost in Oakland Park, seems I made a wrong turn looking for Jack’s Old Fashion Hamburger House. As we’re driving around, we come across the Tortilleria Mexicana which Marcela has been to before and in the same strip mall is Lucarella’s. I figured we’d come in, get a slice and be done with it.

The owner (a really friendly guy) offers us a Chicken Empanada prepared Argentinian style. It was nice, flaky and the Chicken tasted great. We ask for a slice of the Cheese and one of the Margherita.

As we’re waiting the owner’s father comes out and talk to us about his Empanadas. He offers us one and we explain we were already given one. He insists that we must try the Beef Empanada. I’m not the biggest Empanada fan but these guys were excellent.

Empanadas

I didn’t get to take the pic till they were half way eaten because I was so involved. We ask where he got his recipe from and he tells us how he was born in Spain but grew up in Argentina.

Margherita Slice

By this time, the Slices are good to go. They’re really good. As tasty as I thought the cheese was, I find the Margherita slightly better(Marcela agrees). There is also fresh baked Bread which they’ll slice for you.

Bread Selection

I take some Empanadas to go as well as a Meatball Sub. The Meatball Sub was above average. And there’s plenty of things still to try. I just wish I didn’t live so far. I scanned the menu for those who might want to check it out:
