Los Compadres – San Francisco, California

Los Compadres Menu Board

I was stuck at the hotel room (bored and hungry), so I went on a stroll to find some food. I used a cell phone app to find a Sub Shop and proceeded to walk there. By the time I made it, they were closing. On my way back to the hotel I saw Los Compadres. The Menu was simple and straight forward (like most authentic Mexican Taquerias & Restaurants). I ordered the Super Burrito with Carne Asada and a Mexican Coke.

If you’re wondering what’s so different about a Mexican Coke, it’s an imported Coca Cola in a glass bottle from Mexico with Sugar instead of Corn Syrup. It also has a much more appealing flavor. While the burrito had all the right ingredients (Carne Asada, Beans, Guac, Cheese &  Peppers), it was just passable. The ingredients were waiting in steamers and were then put together when I placed my order. I was hoping for something that tasted better but unfortunately, this time I was out of luck.

Joe’s Cable Car Restaurant – San Francisco, California

After walking 12 blocks (down Mission St.) I stumbled upon Joe’s Cable Car Restaurant. As soon as I walked in, it smelled like meat and it felt like home. I was greeted by a butcher grinding chuck steak.

thanks to Edgardo for grinding my burger

Joe’s grind their burgers daily. The seating area is small and filled with lights and pictures of previous customers.

I gave the menu a once over (it’s filled with pictures) and decided to go with the The Country Fresh Beef Steak (burger with a sunny side up egg and cheddar cheese) and some home style fries. The burgers are 4 ounces unless you go with the Hungry Person (6 ounces) or Paul Bunyan Special (8 ounces).

The burger was one of the freshest I have ever had. It was as if they had just ground the patty (wait a second…) . It was a juicy and savory burger. The fries were good too! I was lucky enough to talk to Joe and thank him for grinding his own burger daily (great tradition!).

The Pub – Bar & Grill – San Francisco, California

In Ghirardelli Square, I noticed the Pub Bar & Grill out of the corner of my eye. I was hungry, saw a burger on the menu and decided to give it a try. There is only one burger available, the Pub Burger (half pound of ground chuck, lettuce, tomato, onion strings and aioli) with some options (cheese, bacon or avocado). While waiting I had an Irish Car Bomb. The burger arrived and I was surprised at how big it was (since I didn’t notice that it said half pound on the menu).

one bite down, more to go

The burger was juicy and thick. The only down side to the burger was the excessive amount of aioli sauce. I love aioli as much as the next guy but after whipping some off the burger it became more enjoyable. The views of the bay from this pub were breathtaking and made the experience that much more memorable. If you find your self in Ghirardelli Square give them a try and tell them to put the aioli sauce on the side.

Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop – San Francisco, California

Ghirardelli Sign

While walking around Ghirardelli Square I couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to eat a Sundae here. Inside the Ice Cream Parlor, you can see the Fudge and Ice Cream being made.

Midnight Revive in its Full Glory

I ordered the Midnight Revive which consists of 4 kinds of Chocolate, Fudge, and tiny Chocolate Chunks. This desert tastes as good as it looks. If you are a Chocolate lover I would definitely recommend it to you. (not for the weak).

IN-N-OUT Burger – Daly City, California

My first stop while vacationing in San Francisco is IN-N-OUT Burger. I got the feeling that I was in a 1950′s diner when I walked in. Since I had never been to an IN-N-OUT before, I should have probably ordered a regular Double Double (Double Patty with 2 slices of Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Onions & IN-N-OUT Sauce), but I just needed to order from the “Secret Menu”. The Secret Menu which is the “Not-So-Secret Menu” anymore contains variations on their Burgers and Fries not on the regular order board.

I had a Double Double Animal Style (same toppings as a Double Double but your patty is Mustard cooked with Pickle, extra Sauce and Grilled Onions) and Animal Style Fries (Fries topped with Cheese, Grilled Onions and Sauce) with a Chocolate Shake.

This has to be the best tasting Fast Food Burger I have ever had. It was so juicy and full of flavor. You can taste the freshness of the meat and the Fries were crispy. The best part was I got to watch as the potatoes were cut, fried and served to me. As an added bonus, this location has a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts right next door, win-win.

Hoosier Boy’s Top San Francisco Bay Area Burgers

I recently did a guest review on another great Burger site: hoosierburgerboy.com. I suggest you check it out if you haven’t by now. So SRK (who runs Hoosier Burger Boy) sent me his Top 3 San Francisco Bay Area Burgers, which means I am now planning a trip to the West Coast as you read this. Take it away, SRK:

My guest review for the BurgerBeast.Com will feature my favorite three Burger joints in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are many great burgers here, but these are places with a great Burger Joint aesthetic. They are all locally owned and stand-alone restaurants.

Creamery Extrenal

The Palo Alto Creamery in Palo Alto is right in my back yard. Not only do they have a great Burger, they have great Shakes as well. Their fresh Angus patties sit on top of Buns baked right at the restaurant.

Creamery Burger

Get the California Burger with Avocado, Hobb’s Bacon, Jack Cheese and Grilled Onions. Fresh Cut Fries come with the Burger, but get the Onion Rings as well.

Creamery Onion Rings

Don’t forget the shake. After lunch, walk to the nearby Stanford campus for a beautiful way to work off your lunch.

Joe's Cable Exterior Shot

Joe’s Cable Car Restaurant in San Francisco proudly proclaims Joe Grinds His Own Fresh Chuck Daily. If you don’t believe, ask Joe yourself. He is always there making sure you are enjoying your lunch. You can get a 4, 6 or 8-ounce Burger.

Joe's Cable Car Burger

They aren’t cheap, but they are very good. The place is spotless and the service is spot on as well. Great Onion Rings and Shakes too. It is fun to just sit and look at the neon versions of a Cable Car and the Golden Gate Bridge in the windows.

Val's Exterior

Val’s Burgers in Hayward, CA has been serving up great Burgers for fifty years. It sits in a quiet neighborhood well off the beaten path. Get the 1/2-pound Mama Burger unless you are really hungry, then go for the 1-pound Papa.

Val's Bruger

Val's Onion Rings

The 1/3-pound Baby is there for the petite appetites. Get the Grilled Onions too. One of my favorite sides is the Mushrooms that are buttered and spiced up for your enjoyment.

Taylor's External

I lied about three favorites. If you are heading up to the Napa Valley for some wine tasting, you have to check out Taylor’s Automatic Refresher in St. Helena. Be prepared to wait in line. This is a very popular place.

Taylor Burger

You can grab a perfect Burger and sit outside in the sun at one of their many picnic tables.

Taylor Shake

The natural beef patty is flame broiled and goes great with Cheese, Bacon and their Secret Sauce.
