It’s hard to describe this event someone who hasn’t attended before. If you’re a burger fanatic then this is a must attend event for you. Even if you come hungry you’ll have a difficult time eating all 25 participants’ burgers and the 3 dessert folks’ sweets. This was the 5th year the event has taken place and all the former winners were here (2007: Shake Shack, 2008: Radius, 2009: Good Stuff Eatery and 2010: B Spot). All of our local burger spots did a great job and I didn’t have a bad burger last night. Check out some pics to get your mouth watering for next year’s event. Til then…

3 Finalists will compete on Rachael Ray’s Show for Burger Bash spot

With the 2011 SoBe Burger Bash right around the corner, the Rachael Ray show is tying up some loose ends and select their representative. The magazine gathered submissions from folks all across the U.S. and the staff then narrowed down the entries to three: Paul Malvone (Boston Burger Company), Tommy Up (PYT Burger/Philadelphia) and Mauricio Oliveros (Frank-N-Burger/Long Island, NY).

They’re going to compete on the “Rachael Ray” show on January 13, 2011 for a spot on a Burger Bash roster that already includes big wigs like Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto, & Michael Symon. Speaking of Michael Symon, he along with editor-in-chief of Every Day with Rachael Ray, Liz Vaccariello will be deciding the winner. Whoever wins will have a chance to bring home one of three (or maybe all three) of the SoBe Burger Bash 2011 Awards: Amstel Light People’s Choice Award, Allen Brothers Golden Grill Award & Heinz Best Dressed Burger. The Burger Bash takes place on February 24, 2011 and I hope to have a full list of the burgers being served soon.

Sutter Home’s Build a Better Burger 20th Anniversary in Miami Beach

Build A Better Burger

As a build up to the announcement of the finalists for the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger event taking place in Miami Beach on September 23rd, 2010, their blog listed the top 10 reasons ( one for ten consecutive days) why South Beach was chosen to host the 20th anniversary event:

#10. Sutter Home Build a Better Burger Contest received more entries from Florida this year than any other state and let’s face it, nothing says “party” like grilling on the beach.

#9. Miami Beach was dubbed the Sun and Fun Capital by Jackie Gleason back in the 1960s, and 50 years later, it is still the hottest place to party.

#8. No matter where you are in Florida, you’re never more than 60 miles from a beach.

#7. South Beach has become synonymous with foodie fun – case in point, The Annual South Beach Food & Wine Festival.

#6. Snooky, the Kardashians and the Real Housewives strut their stuff on Ocean Drive.

#5. Miami is the best place to make a tackle – it has hosted more Super Bowls than any other city.

#4. Although Miami is home to plenty of manly sporting events, it is the only major city in the US to be founded by a woman.

#3. Burgers and the beach go hand in hand. Ask Rachael Ray, who launched her Burger Bash in South Beach.

#2. Chart toppers Jason Derulo, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida all call Miami their hometown. And, where would Latin music be without Gloria?

And the #1 reason Sutter Home Build a Better Burger Contest Loves South Beach is… Two words: Le Bron

The Build a Better Burger is televised on the Food Network every year and this year’s winner (Best Beef Burger) will not only receive a $100,000 prize but the burger will also be one of the contestants at the NYC Wine & Food Festival Burger Bash.

There’s also a $15,000 prize for Best Alternative Burger. Those 2 prizes are awarded by the cook-off judging panel. The invited guests attending the cook-off will be allowed to vote and the winner in each category will win $2,500. Unfortunately, this event is by invite only but I’ll be there to get all the meaty details for you. And now, onto the finalists:

The Grinder: SoBe & NY Wine and Food Festival’s Lee Schrager

Most folks know Lee Schrager as the director of the SoBe and NY Wine & Food Festivals. I happen to think of Lee more as a Burger ambassador and giant Burger fan (which explains why the Burger Bash at both festivals are the world series of Burger events). So it’s a good thing he’s agreed to get put through The Grinder as I’ve got some questions that need answering.

BB: What’s your favorite type of burger?

LS: Patty Melt

BB:What’s the best burger you’ve had this year?

LS: I’m a Shake Shack Addict. I’d heard that Lure in New York City is pretty good but I have not been there to try it yet. So for me Shake Shack is still the best this year.

BB: What’s the best burger you’ve ever had?

LS: I think I have to say, one that I grilled myself a few summers back in The Hamptons using Pat La Frieda Black Label meat. It’s the best burger I can remember eating.

BB: When is a Frita (Cuban Hamburger) going to be included in the South Beach Burger Bash?

LS: With your help in securing them, we would love to invite a Frita burger chef to the Festival’s 10th anniversary this year and the 5th anniversary of Burger Bash.

BB: When will Bobby Flay win a Burger Bash? Is he the Susan Lucci of the Burger Bash?

LS: Sadly it appears he is the Susan Lucci of Burger Bash because he’s always in the Top 3 but can never win the top prize.

BB: I’ve got a couple of suggestions for next year’s South Beach Burger Bash, can I send them your way?

LS:Yes, of course!
