Blue Willy’s Traditional Southern BBQ – Ft. Lauderdale Street Food
Posted by: | Comments
As I got off of my car I could smell the glorious smell of the smoker a good 100 feet from me. Blue Willy’s BBQ is a large trailer, part of which is the smoker brightening up my day. I was with my cousin and after taking a good long look at the menu we order everything.

OK, maybe not everything but almost everything except the Brisket and Rib Tips. We also decide it would be best to order everything as a “Plate” so that we can try all the sides. There were five sides: Willy’s Pit Smoked Beans, Coleslaw, Fries, Cornbread and Mac n’ Cheese. The fries were nothing special. The Mac n’ Cheese had a nice little bread crumb crust top but I didn’t feel it was cheesy enough. I didn’t try the coleslaw and beans, my cousin loved them. The Cornbread is a must have with the little pieces of corn sprinkled throughout.

So I won’t have to repeat myself throughout, there was an omnipresent smoke flavor in everything. The homemade smoked sausage was served up first in slivers. The sausage was great and could have easily been a part of a great sandwich with onions. Blue Willy suggested we try mixing both his tomato and mustard BBQ sauces with the Chopped Pork sandwich. I loaded up my sandwich with the mustard sauce and tried adding a bit of the tomato one. I could see some folks preferring the mix but I loved the mustard sauce solo.

The St. Louis Spareribs were my cousin’s favorite but for me, nothing was better than the chicken. It was delicious, it was moist (smokey too!) and it had a White BBQ sauce. I was not familiar with the existence of a White BBQ sauce but it’s an Alabama thing according to Willy. I went back and tried everything again with the white sauce which just confirmed my suspicions. That White BBQ sauce needs to have a permanent home on the condiment shelf in my fridge.

Doggi Style – Venezuelan Street Food in Miami, Florida
Posted by: | CommentsI’ve driven past the gas station where Doggi Style is located (57th Avenue and Coral Way after 4pm) at least a dozen times in the last few months. The banner mentioning their Burgers and Hot Dogs facing the street is what caught my eye originally. I learned upon my arrival that Doggi Style sells Venezuelan-style Burgers & Hot Dogs which are heavy on the sauces. They’re serving out of a modified Hot Dog cart. The food reminds me of Colombian style fast food with salad & corn added, sans the cheese . Weird? Sure. Good? Yes. Let’s not kid anyone here, I didn’t have salad on mine but my wife Marcela did.

The sauces make the dog, the corn is a nice touch and the fact that it’s on a Martin’s Potato Roll is great. I just wish it was a beef dog, that would have made it a grand slam instead of a homerun. Let’s get back to the sauces for a second, there’s a garlic based white sauce that I considered pocketing. I would buy some to take home in a second.

The Burger has all of the toppings of the dog plus cheese and ham. You can also add lettuce and tomato but that’s not happening to any of my Burgers in this lifetime. I forgot to mention I added bacon and an egg to my Burger. Avocado as an added topping is also an option. My burger tasted great the way it was. Choripan, Pepitos and Parillas are also on the menu. What are those? Come on by and find out.

My appearance on the VendrTV episode with Yellow Submarine
Posted by: | CommentsVendr.TV discovers “the world’s best street food, one bite at a time” via webisodes. I’d like to thank them for asking me to be a part of the episode featuring the Yellow Submarine. It was a great blast to film which I think comes across during the webisode and during the outtakes shown after the credits.
Bites On Wheels – Miami Food Truck
Posted by: | CommentsI’ll admit I made a mistake when I ate at Bites On Wheels. I regret not ordering the Steak Sandwich aka Pan Con Bistec. Bites On Wheels is a small food truck (alright not really a truck) but it’s laid out well enough that some good eats can be prepared.

After looking over the menu I decide on three tacos (1 of each: chicken, steak and carnitas) & a hot dog and sausage to go. The all beef hot dog and sausage are gigantic and served in a Media Noche Sandwich Bread (an eggy, slightly sweet bread).

I had both with potato sticks, mustard and the red NY style tomato onion sauce. While both meat sticks tasted great, the bread may have been a tad too big. It couldn’t hurt to possibly have toasted the bread also. Now, the tacos were right on point. The Salsa Verde & Salsa Roja were good but the Chipotle Sauce was killer.

The Carnitas (pork) was my favorite of the three but you won’t go wrong having any of them. All are topped with diced red onions and cilantro. So where to from here? The Steak Sandwich is the final frontier and captain, full speed ahead. Till next time.

Orale! Taqueria Mexicana – Miami Food Truck
Posted by: | CommentsAfter 3 attempts of showing up at Orale! during their “business hours” I finally arrived just as they were opening. I would definitely call before showing up if I were you.

| el Menu |
The menu is very simple: tacos, quesadillas and drinks (regular soft drinks and some Mexican specialty drinks). I order a chicken taco and a chorizo taco as well as a cheese quesadilla.

You’re served your taco and you add toppings to your liking. The sauces and toppings are laid out for you at the very front of the cart. Of the 3 sauces available I preferred the Salsa Verde which was the “Medium” salsa. The Salsa Extra Picante is chile habanero, no thank you, I’d like to be able to sit down later.

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink aka MGFD Cart
Posted by: | CommentsWhile the Beast is away in NYC I was given a mission: Go to the Art Walk and try out the Michael’s Genuine Food Cart. I of course accepted his task and was off to the art district. I was amazed to find out how many people were out and about, it was crazy like a party casino. I ended up finding a parking space about a block and a half away from the cart’s location. I was really able to find my way to the cart due the aroma of meat.

The cart was running at 7pm and I arrived around 8pm. By that time, almost all the food was gone (They’re only serving 100 portions). 2 Hedy’s Kasha Knishes, 2 House made sausage sandwich with all the condiments, and a Homemade Butter Popcorn Ice Cream.

The Knishes were great and hit the spot to start off. First bite in to the sausage I was able to taste a slight spiciness which is similar to brown mustard. I hate mustard and pickles but that didn’t bother me one bit. By 9pm the cart was sold out but I was ready to have another sausage.

Pincho Man – Miami Food Truck
Posted by: | Comments
Who is Pincho Man and why should you care? A few folks have told me about this elusive Pincho Man and how he’s had to move around and change his location. He cooks out of a truck which means he’s always travel ready. How do you find out where he is? Well, you call his cell phone and he will either disclose his new location and/or give you directions to where he’s at. Ricky aka Pincho Man sells his food Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 pm to 4:30 am. By the time Marcela and I arrived, there was over 12 people in line (by the time we left over 20). We stood in line only to find out that we had to go to the back of the truck to order first. Here we meet Pincho Man who takes our order but not before he tells us he’s been doing this for 10 years. I will paraphrase most of what he said. He loves selling to people. He loves meeting new people. Everyone who buys from him are his friends. Now we can be his friend too (I felt as if I was on a Barney episode). Pincho Man then does the hand pound with both Marcela and I and asks for our names. Just as we’re getting out the camera to snap a few pictures he tells us “No Pictures” (which explains the Cloverfield like pics I took). He tells me that he likes to keep a low profile. There’s something wrong with this picture. There are 2 Facebook pages and 1 MySpace page (where I got his number from when I called him for directions). Not to mention he is wearing a Pincho Man t-shirt that says “My Way OR The Highway ” on the back and there’s also a Pincho Man bumper sticker. I ask him, “Then why are you on MySpace?” His reply “I might be on the moon and I don’t even know it”. I decided at that point it was best give up that line of questioning or I might now get to try the food. His spends the next 5 minutes explaining to us that his burgers are called “Off The Chain Burgers”
and his hot dogs are “Sammy Dogs”. You can get Pinchos (steak or chicken) on a stick or deluxe which puts them on bread with potato sticks (something that seems to be on each sandwich. Once I place my order for my Off The Chain Burger, Sammy Dog,
Steak Pincho Deluxe
and Chicken Pincho Deluxe we make our way back to the end of the line we were originally at. We wait till it’s our turn and we repeat our order again “to his friend” aka the lady at the window. I snap a nice blurry pic through the window with my phone (ooh I might get in trouble).
Marcela and I notice one thing. There is a stack of already cooked burgers off to one side. We pay for our food and go. Also, there’s one thing I don’t understand. Why make everyone go to the back of the truck to place an order and make them stand in a second line to pick it up and pay for it if you’re going to be stacking cooked burgers (and not have the orders ready). So we proceed to our car to eat. There is nowhere else to eat unless you plan to sit on the ground. First to bat is the Steak Pincho Deluxe with potato sticks and special sauces. We both found it be very average, nothing special here. The Chicken Pincho Deluxe was the best thing we had and you could taste that some actual seasoning was placed on it. The Sammy Dog was a very bland tasting hot dog with ketchup, mustard and potato sticks. The Off The Chain Burger I thought was something I might find at someone’s BBQ. It had some seasoning on it (maybe mojo), ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce and cheese. Nothing special, trust me. Marcela did love it probably because it was super dry. Super dry as if someone had stacked it on other burgers…wait a second. The Chicken Pincho Deluxe is the way to go if you decide to check out Pincho Man. I will say it’s worth the adventure to say you checked it out. I won’t give you any of his contact info though, remember he’s trying to keep a low profile.
