Cerro Negro, A Nicaraguan Restaurant In Sweetwater

First thing is first, Cerro Negro is a Nicaraguan restaurant not a Fritanga. If you’re not even sure what that means (I didn’t before I started dating my wife 15 years ago) even better. Sweetwater is littered full of Nicaraguan businesses and Fritangas seem to make up a large portion of them. Fritangas are the quick service version of a Nicaraguan restaurant. The greatest hits of Nicaraguan food can be found ready to go with a couple of specials daily. Some of them also have seating but it’s normally very limited. You can find Fritangas in Davie, Hialeah, Miami Gardens and even Pembroke Pines.

Cerro Negro (named after the volcano in Nicaragua) is situated right where La Hormiga de Oro (another Nica resto) once was, in Sweetwater on the corner of 97th Avenue and Flagler. My parent turned me onto to this place but not without some trepidation on my part. I love them both but I do question some of the restaurants they love to eat at. So much so, that they spoke so highly of Cerro Negro that I was sure I wasn’t going to like it. It turns out I was very wrong.

In keeping with what I just told you, I ordered the Sangria against their wishes. They didn’t care for the heavy cinnamon flavor of it but I did. I wasn’t even expecting it be that potent and it was a nice change from the regular run of the mill Sangria you find everywhere. If you’re keeping score at home, I didn’t tie the cherry’s stem into a knot. It’s not that I can’t but there’s a time and place for everything plus I don’t think my parents would have been that impressed.

The Taquitos are shredded Beef topped with the Nicaraguan Slaw and Crema (a variation on Sour Cream). We also had the Queso Frito (Fried Cheese) and Tostones (flattened & fried Plantains) to help us prepare for the meal. Don’t forget to ask for a side of their Jalapeño Crema to spice things up.

What makes Nicaraguan style Carne Asada so good is the marinade. And if it’s done right, the pieces of beef are so tender you could just pick it up, forgo silverware and eat the steak with your hand. I’ve seen this firsthand. Cerro Negro’s Carne Asada is excellent, one of the best I’ve had. On this occasion I had some of their flavorful White Rice but the Gallo Pinto is really where it’s at. The Tajadas (fried sweet Plantain Chips, sliced longwise) are always a great side but my favorite is the Queso Frito. This pan fried block of White Cheese is something I find myself at times obsessing over. The saltiness of the Cheese can be off putting to some folks but it’s what makes it stand out amongst what some try to pass off as “Queso Frito”. There is nothing like it.

Cerro Negro opens at 7am for breakfast but I’ve never made it, and I probably won’t unless there’s Carne Asada and Queso Frito on the morning menu.

A&G Burger Joint Coming To Sweetwater – Saturday December 22nd

A&G Burger Joint Logo

Chef/Owner Alex Parra will be opening A&G Burger Joint in Sweetwater next Saturday December 22nd at 7PM. There a few things I’m liking about this place. First is that they’re opening at 9AM and serving Breakfast which means possible Burgers for breakfast.  Second, there are some appetizers like Wings and Sandwiches like Buffalo Chicken if you’re not having a Burger kinda day. And for you lager folk there will be a good selection of Imported, Domestic and Craft Beers.

Everything including the sauces are made in house. You can choose from one of their Burger creations or go the “Build Your Own Burger” route. The Caliente Burger with its Angus beef patty built with chipotle mayonnaise, roasted poblano & Anaheim peppers and pepper jack cheese caught my eye as did the Turkey Burger, a Grilled Turkey patty built with kalamata garlic aioli, grilled tomato and mozzarella cheese on a Parmesan crusted Brioche bun. Even the Sweet Potato Fries have something going on, they’re served with a Maple Cream Sauce.

And yes, there’s To Go, Delivery and even 15% off for FIU Students, Police Officers and Firefighters. I better suit up!

The menu is not finalized but you can still check it out here.

Raspados Loly’s In Sweetwater, Florida

My wife Marcela introduced me to Raspados Loly’s back in 1998. Raspados are Nicaraguan Icees. There’s a giant block of ice which is shaved, packed into a cup and layered with Dulce de leche.

You don’t have to choose Dulce de leche though, there are other flavors like Nancite (yellow cherries), Tamarindo, Pineapple, Jocote (a type of plum), Strawberry, Mango and Mamoncillo(when in season). You can also order it “con relleno” which means they’ll add some poundcake to it. Raspados Loly’s originated in Nicaragua and has been around for over 50 years.

The shop also sells regular icees, Ice cream, Nicaraguan cajetas (sweets) and my personal favorite, Nicaraguan Coke.

Marcela also loves Coyolitos. Coyolitos are like a bitter coconut. The inside is ground up, rolled into a ball and then rolled again in sugar. They look like little chocolate doughnut balls. Personally, I thought it taste like bad licorice.

If you’ve never had a Raspado I say you give it a try and Marcela wanted me to pass along a suggestion. Order the Dulce de leche con relleno and make sure you mash it up, she says it tastes better that way.

Los Mega Perros in Sweetwater, Florida

Los Mega Perros is hidden behind a Denny’s and a Chase Bank in a strip mall. I’ve had my eyes on this place for a little while. The one time I attempted to go during the day I could not find parking so I gave up. I decided it would be best to make my next attempt at night time which worked out well.

I ordered a Maicito with Cheese (can of Corn topped with melted Mozzarella Cheese, crushed Potato Chips and their Pink and Pineapple sauces), Papitas Francesas (French Fries), Mega Perro and the Mega Burger. The Maicito served at  this place is superior to any other I’ve had. It has the right mix of Corn to Toppings. The fries, well they’re just your run of the mill thing. The Mega Perro is one the best dogs I’ve tasted in all the Colombian fast food places I’ve been to. I suspect that this dog is a Sabrett (it comes with melted Mozzarella Cheese, Pink sauce, Pineapple sauce and crushed Potato Chips).

The Mega Burger has some nice seasoning on it. The problem is all the toppings (melted Mozzarella Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Pink sauce, Pineapple sauce, slice of Ham and crushed Potato Chips) almost make you forget there’s a burger under there. At least the sauces aren’t overwhelming everything and the crushed Potato Chips are of course a nice touch. If you get a chance, swing by and check this place out but I definitely suggest you go at night.

Outback Steakhouse in Sweetwater, Florida

So lately I’ve had a love/hate relationship (mostly hate) with Outback Steakhouse. In the early ’90s years this place was it for me. I loved the Aussie Cheese Fries (fresh cut fries topped with Cheese & Bacon and served with a side of ranch), the Bloomin’ Onion (deep fried Onions Petals with a side of a spicy-ish sauce), Alice Springs Chicken (grilled breast of Chicken topped with Bacon and Cheese), No Rules Pasta and occasionally their burgers.

I also happen to think that their fountain Coke is probably one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Over the course of the few years, I noticed the customer service was just not there anymore and the quality/quantity of food declined while the prices steadily rose. Worst of all the fries are now frozen which was my main reason for eating here.

I had not eaten there in probably a good 6 to 8 months, when I used to go there once a week. So, I ordered a burger to go over the weekend and it seemed that the magic was back. Everything was like I remembered it, great friendly service with great tasting food. I wanted to actually eat there, so I tricked my wife Marcela into going with me, well tricked is a relative term, we were shopping for Halloween decorations which just happen to be near the Outback Steakhouse. She was hesitant to eat there and it did take a little convincing. They added the Alice Springs Chicken Quesadilla to the menu. It comes in a full or half portion and it tastes just like an Alice Springs Chicken in quesadilla form, hence the name, pretty nifty huh?

Alice Springs Chicken Quesadilla

Let’s get to the burger talk, I ordered their Bloomin’ Burger: “A fresh 1/2 pound USDA “Choice” ground steak burger topped with Outback’s own Bloomin’ Onion® petals, American cheese, Lettuce, Tomato and the famous Bloomin’ Onion sauce”. Served with Aussie Chips ( info lifted straight from their website).

Well, the burger is pretty good as usual, but I don’t know about this combo with onion petals and sauce. I don’t really think it added anything to the burger in terms of flavor. You are better off ordering their No Rules Burger, which allows you to add your choice of toppings. It’s been removed from the menu.

I forgot to mention the delicious bread served to you (at no cost) when you’re seated but that doesn’t make up for everything else unfortunately.
