A&G Burger Joint Beefs Up Sweetwater, Florida

Sweetwater isn’t exactly known for its burgeoning food scene but it is the Fritanga capital of South Florida. Right on its border to Westchester near FIU you can find A&G Burger Joint with its giant Burger menu and great Craft Beer selection. A&G Burger Joint opened up in late December of 2012 and I’ve probably been here a good ten to twelve times since.

The buns they were using has changed so for example, the Nacho Burger may not look exactly like this. The Nacho Burger should be described as an explosion of flavors.

They recently switched over to Martin’s Big Marty Rolls which I love. There are almost 20 Burger creations on the menu that range from a Juicy Lucy (stuffed with Cheese) to the 5:0 Burger (donuts as buns). You can of course create your own (B.Y.O.B.) from all of the toppings and ingredients. There’s even Bison, Turkey & Veggie as protein options. I’m a big Patty Melt fan and if I get the inkling that there’s something similar on a menu I always go for it. Their Burger Melt with Parmesan Crusted Bread is a beauty. I added some Applewood Bacon to the equation. If you can’t make up your mind on what to order, I suggest you start with this one.

Choosing your side is a difficult with all the options available. I’ve tried all of them and lean towards the Truffle Fries or Onion Rings. They recently added Chili Cheese Fries which are another great choice in particular if you’re sharing, it’s a large portion.

Dipping sauces play a big part in the side world here at A&G Burger Joint. The Savory Creole Mustard is my hands down favorite. It is so good I dip my napkins in it, just kidding. The Honey Mustard is a close second for me. My wife Marcela loves the Kalamata Garlic Aioli sauce.

If you come here on an empty sandwich I suggest starting off with either their Garlic Buffalo Tenders (double hand battered) or the Fire Buffalo Wings. The Wings have to be some of the best in the city. There’s no skimping here as they’re meaty and sauced up just right. The Fire Sauce has the right amount of heat so that means you won’t be sweating as if you just ran a marathon.

My love for their tenders turned me onto their Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. I opted out of the veggies but added a slab of Queso Frito (Nicaraguan style Fried Cheese). Hey, we’re in Sweetwater and I do as the Nicaraguans do. You really must have this if you’re into the whole Spicy, Sweet and Salty thing.

You can close out your meal with a Cafecito (which I always do) and a dessert. There are two options here, Brownie Explosion or Banana Split. I’ve withheld the picture of the Brownie Explosion because it’s something that needs to be experienced, much like A&G Burger Joint.

Frenchie’s Bistro – West Kendall, Florida

Frenchie’s Bistro in West Kendall opened shop in early August. I had a great lunch there but my camera malfunctioned and I lost all the pictures. I kept telling myself I would be back to eat the days following that lunch which turned into almost 3 months. I finally made it back and got to try the sandwich that eluded me those months ago, Vive Le Rock. We’ll get to that in a little bit.

The waiter mentions to us while taking our drink order that the Soup of the Day is Broccoli Cheese. The Soup is served in a mini cast iron skillet along with 2 pieces of toasted bread. All the Broccoli Cheese Soup components were there but I found it to have to much cheese (as unbelievable as it may sound for me to say that). I’m not a fan of battling a string of cheese with every spoonful. It did taste very good though.

Chow Down Grill – Miami Beach, Florida

I woke up very hungry this morning. Chow Down Grill popped into my head even though I’m well aware it’s been replaced. I checked out Frodnesor’s Food for Thought to reread what he had said about them (click to read) in the hopes it would appease me, it didn’t.

Unfortunately by the time I ate at Chow Down Grill they were in the middle of the conversion to MB Brewhouse. All I have are these pictures to show from those 2 meals, so for now these food memories will have to do:

Hole in the Wall Pub – Palmetto Bay, Florida

Hole in the Wall Pub is difficult to find. It’s hidden in the back right corner of a strip mall. Seating inside are some picnic type tables and bar stools along with some full on tables outside. I take a seat at the bar, nearest to the grill/cooking  area and size up the menu. There was something I had been thinking but didn’t really want to confirm until I tried the food.

MB Brewhouse in Miami Beach, Florida

I was little late to the Chow Down Grill party, well….more than a little late. After being in the Miami Beach food scene for almost 2 years I checked them out right before they became MB Brewhouse. I actually hate myself for not going any sooner but at least a couple of Chow Down’s greatest hits made it onto the new menu.

Some of the items above were not available when I hit up the newly minted Brewhouse. I was with 3 other folks, so we went Starter crazy and of course I had to also try out the Burger.

The Brew House Wings were up first and served with Carrot slivers, Celery and a homemade Blue Cheese Sauce. Fear not those who shy away from heat, these Chicken fellas were covered in a creamy buttery Buffalo Sauce. This Sauce would also go great on Chicken Strips :::wink wink::::

Kings County Pizza – North Miami Beach, Florida

Kings County Pizza wasn’t some place I just discovered driving around town but thanks to the Chowfather. I had put it on my must try list over a year ago and there it laid dormant til Fatgirl Hedonist brought up Kings County Pizza a few months ago.

I was kinda overwhelmed as to what exactly I should order as the Pizza is the obvious choice but I remember CF mentioning the Baked Ziti. I figure I can’t go wrong with some Garlic Knots and a slice of their Neapolitan Pizza to start with.

Pao Town in Coral Gables, Florida

What’s in a name? Pao Town, what exactly does that mean? I was sure Pao wasn’t named after the girl who worked with me a few years back or the term (pao pao) my grandmother used to threaten me with when she was trying to prevent from doing something bad when I was a child. So I had to look it up which means I won’t tell you what it is but at least I made it easier for you by linking the definition. On to the food….

Pao Town is located in the ever growing Coral Gables food scene and can be probably best described as Momofuku-esque. The menu is not very big with 6 mains, a couple of salads, a few “Buns” which include a Pork Bun, 2 hot dogs and some sliders & 5 sides. There was also a special on the board but I don’t recall what it was but be on the lookout for it if you’re a “Specials” kinda person.

I ended up visiting twice within a few days of each other. That first night I chose to go with the Bacon Fried Rice, Sliders w/Togarashi Fries and Sticky Ribs. The second time I went for lunch and had Bacon Fried Rice, Sliders w/Fries and Pao Wings. Now looking back, I’m not sure why I didn’t have the Pork Buns but there’s always next time.

The Bacon Fried Rice was just as you imagined it being. It’s a pretty standard Fried Rice affair with Bacon & Pineapple jonesing for your attention. It’s very important that you get a bit of the Pineapple and/or Bacon in each bite or it won’t be very memorable. There’s some Sriracha at the table and a dash of that doesn’t hurt either.

The Sliders were one of the 2 most memorable things I had at Pao Town. These little fellas are about 4 bite of sheer pleasure. They’re served on Hawaiian Sweet Rolls and topped with Caramelized Onions and Wasabi Ranch. There is no Cheese on these and no need it for it. The Onions and Ranch create this creaminess which is made that much better by the Medium-Rare/Medium cooked patties. The rolls are also lightly buttered on top. Nice touch.

The regular Fries can be upgraded to Togarashi Fries (tossed in Japanese Seven-Spice) with a Wasabi Ketchup. I suggest you do as I tried both and found the spiced up Fries to be more fulfilling than the plain janes.

The Sticky Ribs which are Pork Riblets (tossed in a Black Vinegar & Soy Reduction) were not really my cup of tea. These guys were really dependent on the sauce which was good but maybe a little too much when you’ve got to eat this large of a quantity. But I’m sure the Captain Tso’s Chicken crowd will eat this up.

Sticky Ribs

Did I leave the best for last? It was a definitely a close one between the Pao Wings and the Sliders. On the first visit I took some Wings to go for my wife. I tried one and it packed such a wallop of  flavors that I knew I needed a full order for myself. These dudes were no joke. They’re dusted with Cumin & Black Pepper and were just about as crispy as you can get Chicken. There’s a sauce served with it but I preferred it “virgin”. A must order item.

Pao Wings

My wife also had the Kalbi Short Ribs and she thought they were great. I’ve now got the Pork Buns, Brussel Sprouts and Egg Roll in my sites for next visit. Let me know how you enjoy the Sliders & Wings.
