The year’s biggest surprise in Zagat’s Fast Food Survey is of course Five Guys & Fries being named Best Burger. Last year’s winner was In-N-Out. For those with inquisitive minds, the amount of surveyors for the 2010 edition was 6,518. Before we get to the list I thought it would be funny to review the list of comment outtakes from the survey:
The BP of food.
They fry harder.
Loved it when I was in high school, but I was going through my stoner phase.
I think this is where I developed a fear of clowns.
Ordinary is still the unattainable goal here.
Great cost-cutting strategy: use same material for pizza and boxes.
Just because it’s “all beef” doesn’t mean it’s any part of the cow you’d consciously eat.
Serves rubber balls and calls them lobster.
Should serve intestinal medicine as an amuse-bouche.
Voted “Most Popular” by the American Cardiology Association.
If they could, they’d deep-fry the menus.

What part of the chicken was that exactly?
If you have a taste bud, move on.
Amazing how one can pile so many ingredients together and still come up flavor-free.
I go there to practice ice skating in the grease on the floor.
Steaks cut from a boxing kangaroo that lost the fight.
I’m still confused about what that sausage is and what animal it came from.
Fries should be served with heart paddles.
The restaurant version of the movie Deliverance.
You shouldn’t even try to eat here if you don’t live in a trailer.
Most of the food is soft because so few of the customers have any teeth left.
Drunks everywhere would be lost without it.
Do they actually teach people how to ruin chicken and potatoes or is this learned on the job?
They improved it into low-grade dog food; god only knows what it was before.
Testimony to the fact that there’s a sucker born every minute, and also one exiting a freeway.

I had an appendectomy the day after I visited – coincidence?
I’ve also listed The Fast Food Edition 2009 winners for comparison:
Five Guys swept in and took over the top spot, meanwhile everyone else moves down one spot. Whataburger also dropped off the list. Five Guys also had a growth explosion in the last year and considering In-N-Out is regional chain, they’re still doing well.
Best Burger 2010
1. Five Guys
2. In-N-Out Burger
4. Burger King
Lots of movement in the Best French Fries category, the most significant being Five Guys’ appearance at 2nd place (Chick-fil-A dropped off). Most people were shocked Five Guys topped In-N-Out in the previous category but honestly, if they beat McDonald’s for Best French Fries that would be an impressive feat.
Best French Fries 2010
2. Five Guys
3. In-N-Out Burger
5. Burger King
No changes, which was not really a surprise.
Best Value Menu 2010
3. Taco Bell
4. Burger King
McDonald’s is still holding onto the Best Value title with Panera Bread jumping straight into 2nd place. Chipotle moved up a couple of spots while Subway stayed in 4th place. Chick-fil-A rounds out the Top 5 while Wendy’s, In-N-Out Burger & Taco Bell dropped off.
Best Value 2010
2. Panera Bread
Church’s and Bojangles’ switched spots, that’s pretty much it.
Best Fried Chicken 2010
3. Church’s Chicken
4. Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits
The Top 2 spots stayed the same and Einstein’s & Au Bon Pain debut at 3rd and 4th places. Burger King drops off the list altogether which is weird considering they’ve done a big breakfast push within the last year.
Best Breakfast Sandwiches 2010
2. Panera Bread
3. Einstein Bros. Bagels
4. Au Bon Pain
5. Chick-fil-A /
Dunkin’ Donuts (tied)
Dairy Queen moves up to 1st and Cold Stone Creamery moves from 4th to 2nd while Ben & Jerry’s drops to 5th from 1st. Sonic & Chick-fil-A move into the 3rd and 4th spots and McDonald’s & Wendy’s are no longer on the list. I’m a big fan of Dairy Queen’s Milkshakes so you won’t catch me disagreeing with their #1 status.

2. Cold Stone Creamery
3. Sonic Drive-In
5. Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops
