Polo Norte Restaurant is all over Miami

Most folks think of Polo Norte for two things, ice cream & Cuban-style pizza. I’ve never had dessert, much less ice cream, any time I’ve eaten here. Fans of Cuban-style pizza come here to fulfill their fantasies.

The croquetas at Polo Norte are divine. They are a bit on the large side and have something that reminds me of my favorite croqueta of my youth, Latin American on Coral Way & 97th Avenue in Westchester (the place is long gone).

These are a must-order item and a hidden gem amongst croqueta aficionados.

Now onto the Frita or Cuban burger or whatever you call it at home. It pains me to see a Frita served on a regular burger bun, especially one that’s got everything going for it as this one does.

The crispy homemade julienne potatoes, the raw onions, and a deformed patty almost made this a home run for me. The beef patty had the chorizo/paprika combo that makes a Frita what it is to most palates.

I hope they change to a Cuban bread roll to bring this guy into his own.

Cuban Pizza at Polo Norte

If you’ve never had it, the most significant distinction in taste is the dough, which almost has a raw unfinished flavor. So I played it a little safe and had the chorizo pizza with, you guessed it, chorizo.

I also leaned towards eating the picadillo pizza (seasoned ground beef) but regret not having the platano maduros pizza (sweet plantains). It would have introduced an exciting combo to me: cheese & plantains.

The chorizo pizza was just as it should be. It had melted cheese with sweetish tomato sauce and chorizo pieces hidden under the covers.

I crave Cuban pizza every once in a while, but I’m not obsessed with it like some friends. So try it for yourself and see if you like it because it is one of that hate or like-it kinda deals.

There are more than 7 locations in Miami, but I frequent the one on Coral Way. So I say, go for the pizza and stay for the croquetas.
