Hot Diggity Dogs & More in Dania Beach is one of those roadside stands that you read about and wish was in your neighborhood. There’s nothing fancy here just a hot dog joint by some good folks serving up wieners with some Chicago love thrown in.
Once inside you’ll realize it’s not very big and seating is only outdoors on picnic tables. You could just place a phone order and pick up via the handy dandy “anti-drive thru” window they have also. Another thing to remember is that Hot Diggity Dogs is CASH only and not open past 4:30PM plus they’re closed on Sundays & Mondays.
We decided to try out a couple of things. I saw a burger and of course, I had to have it. I wasn’t expecting big things and I also wasn’t expecting to be transported to another time. This burger is exactly what your high school cafeteria used to serve. Sure, it’s not the most special burger in the land but it brought me much comfort to remember that feeling and flavor.
The beer battered onion rings were nice and crispy. They also had the fatal flaw where it’s a battle to take a bite and not remove the entire onion innards of the ring. They do look nice in the picture though.
All encased meats at Hot Diggity Dogs are by the Vienna Beef company which is a good thing. My Chili-Cheese-Onion-Mustard Hot Dog was right on target. It was so good I was ready to have another that is until I tried the Chicago-Style Dog. The Chicago, of course, comes topped with Mustard, Tomatoes, chopped Onions Pickle sliver, Peppers, Neon Green Relish on a steamed Poppy Seed Bun. I’ve never been to Chi-town but I can’t imagine a dog over there tasting better than this.
Hands down the best thing I had was the Polish Beef Sausage. I had it “Maxwell Street Style” which means topped with Grilled Onions, Pickle, Peppers & Yellow Mustard on a steamed Poppy Seed Bun. My mouth just starts to water thinking of this one. Thanks to Oren of the SFT Truck for suggesting I try this cause he was right on the money.
What Hot Diggity Dogs & More lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in character, food, and service. That’s a tradeoff I wouldn’t mind dealing with every day of the week.
