Sub Center and Siciliano’s Frozen Custard in Hollywood

Sub Center and Siciliano’s Frozen Custard are located next to each other in Hollywood. The shared lot also allows some parking in front and on the side of the small structures.

The buildings remind me of the original Royal Castle restaurants cause of their size and look. What’s also great is that their food complements one another.

Sub Center predates Siciliano’s Frozen Custard by almost 40 years. Louis Siciliano opened Sub Center in 1961, and by the late 1980s, it had grown to six locations.

Siciliano’s Frozen Custard opened in 2000. The owner, Don Drybead, named the spot after his grandfather. Both locations are still family-owned, which is great to know and makes supporting them much easier.

I’ve eaten at Sub Center in Hollywood, Florida, only a handful of times. If it were closer to me, I’d definitely be a regular customer.

What am I getting? Hot subs are always the way to go. Don’t get me wrong—I love cold-cut subs as much as the next fella—but choosing a cheesesteak is a no-brainer.

Speaking of cheesesteaks, that’s my go-to at Sub Center. I always have mayo on mine; I’m not sure why, though.

Is that even a thing? My Dad eats his cheesesteak that way, and by default, mine has been ordered the same way since I can recall.

I know double meat is an option, and I need to take the Sub Center folks up on that offer. There is a meatball sub on the menu, but unfortunately, there is no burger hoagie.

We always grab chips with our subs but last year I saw the Whole Shabang and had to have it. So, if you’re into potato chip flavors of all kinds, then this is for you.

Plus, it has a fascinating history with its origins tied to prison commissaries.

Siciliano’s Frozen Custard has no indoor seating, but there are some benches with tables for those who’d like to sit down and enjoy their icy treats. You can get your custard in a cup or a cone.

Frozen custard is denser ice cream with higher butterfat and egg yolk content if you’re unfamiliar with it. This all equates to awesomeness.

You can choose vanilla, chocolate, or swirl at Siciliano’s. Marcela ate a vanilla/chocolate swirl dipped in chocolate on a cone.

I went with plain ol’ vanilla, as my wife calls it. It’s always great to try out the base flavor cause you know if they nail that, everything will be good. And yes, they nailed it!

Imagine one of the most decadent ice creams you’ve ever had, and you’ll be in the ballpark of what’s going on here. So, don’t fight your urges; drive here and indulge cause you deserve it.

  1. My family has been going to Subcenter since they opened in the early 60’s, my dad’s co-worker’s daughter was one of their first counter girls and put us on to them. The classic Italian Mix with the white american cheese is better than it has a right to be. But the true quite star is the Tuna sub, don’t know what it is but it is the best, even if you don’t like tuna. You are right the plan-vanilla frozen custard is amazing, the pumpkin they do for the thanksgiving/christmas holidays is a must.
